An FCS WAC may do NMST football some good after they lost 43-17 to Tarleton state tonight

As a Tarleton fan, I'm pretty happy with it.

As a Texas State fan,, I haven't had much to be happy about lately

Very shocking. I feel bad for NMSU fans.

Will they even be able to beat the non-D1 teams on their schedule? Tarleton State racked up 500 yards of offense, and NMSU only had 240 total yards.

RE: NMST football in shambles.
I feel there are some programs that just can't win no matter what, NMSU seems to be one of those. No matter who they hire or fire. I would have also like to have seen who was actually interested in that job when it was open in 2013 and Doug Martian got the job. Before NMSU he was the HC at Kent State and from 2004 to 2010 went 29-53 (21-35).

UTEP is in the same boat, both universities are to far away from anyone else it is really inconvenient. The thing is I don't know how they stay consistent in basketball, which makes no sense.

They play Dixie State after Tarleton, and they are officially Gone with the Wind...

Is NMSU able to practice. From what I've read there are rules effecting their ability to even conduct practices within the state.

They are practicing and playing in the Sun Bowl. UTEP is charging them 5K per practice and 10K per game played there, which seems like a pretty good deal.

Time to bring the option in. They would at least be competitive.

Would they? They just got smoked by a team that was D2 7 months ago. They also have the canary that is Idaho as a cautionary tale. Idaho probably thought they could be competitive too.

Idaho didn't run the option and Tarleton State wouldn't have enough time to score 43 points against the option.

Not sure how thats relevant. All I'm saying is that Idaho did move down and were immediately not competitive. Not very inspiring for NMSU considering they are worse right now than Idaho was when they dropped.

Oh my.... woosh... I wasn't even thinking the option offense. I thought he meant the option as in the option for them to move down.... I'm dumb haha 03-lmfao

Ha. Not a problem. The debate was still flowing. I didn't even pick up that you didn't know I meant the option offense.

Contrary to what some think the option isn't that hard to defend if you have a decent defense. If playing an option attack all your defense has to do is keep within their each assigned offensive player and don't over sell the play. If you are gap sound and can tackle then the option isn't that big of a deal.

You might get beat over the top once or twice but that is the risk keeping each person in their gaps.

Coaches have been saying for years it is the hardest offense to prepare your team for when it falls in the middle of your schedule and you only have a few days to prepare for it. That is why a lot of teams try to schedule an Army the first game of the season. Army doesn't even really get real recruits that other schools would offer and they have taken Oklahoma and Michigan to the wire just recently. The option doesn't always do very well for bowl games when the opponent has had weeks or even a month to prepare for it.

That area of the country is in COVID shambles. I wouldn't put too much meaning on 2020-21 results in athletics.

I'd be very curious to see how many scholarship players NMSU has for this spring "season". I'd bet the under on 50
