I could see how a school may need time to get things in order.

I just rewatched the Ted Talks commissioner video and he said they were in talks with a 6th school.

So something must’ve fallen apart regarding them joining this year.

There are talk on D2 forums that West Georgia, Valdosta State and West Florida could be interested in joining the ASun. West Georgia needs to add 2 men's sports and one women's sports. Men's tracvk and men's tennis can be coached by the women's coach without hiring a new coach, and the volleyball coach can coach beach volleyball for the women's. Valdosta State can do the same with men's tennis. They could add both men and women's wrestling, beach volleyball and 1 other women sports. West Florida is set at 15 with 7/8. They seemed to be interested because of former rivals of Jacksonville State, North Alabama, UCA and interested in when North Florida will add football. With Kennesaw State already there, you tend to get a tight knit football there. They are the larger schools that could make the jump.

It will be interesting.

I havent seen any news articles or notices of urgent board meetings which usually accompany big news.

I agree with the sentiment that we will most likely see the 5 ASun schools split between the WAC and the Big South for 2021

I will give a surprise school to look for. Campbell of the Big South. They actually could rent from NCSU for stadium as the Build their onsite stadium. Elon would be the other, using A&Ts stadium is Greensboro. Again, JMU seems like the logical choice if FBS aspirations are there.

JMU turned down the Sun Belt, so it seems unlikely they'd leave the CAA to join an FCS startup league with delusions of FBS consisting of a hodgepodge of schools that are disgruntled, unremarkable, and/or recent D2 callups.

Elon would pass for the same reason. The Big South is nothing to write home about, but it's far more suited geographically for Campbell than the A-Sun is. Also, you may recall that Campbell FB just recently joined the Big South after a stint in the no-scholarship Pioneer League. Doesn't bode well for FBS aspirations.

While Campbell is newer to the scholarship football landscape, they're putting a lot of money toward their athletic department. I think they're spending $13ish million a year on their AD. That's the same as EKU and higher than TUNA. They can spend that $13 million and bus everywhere they want to go. That money saved on travel is put toward facilities and coaches. I think FCS is their ceiling, as I don't think they see themselves as a Liberty, more of a Furman.

Wow, you didn't even copy from that thread correctly. And that thread is absolutely not saying what you claim. The West Florida posters are all saying they want to stay in D2.

First, West Florida and Jacksonville State were never rivals...

Second, as much as I like (from a competitive perspective) VSU and West Georgia, they have to add sports to move, and I think both have said very recently that they have no interest in D1, officially.

Honestly West Florida would be the best D2 option for the ASUN... even West Florida would have some work to do though. Mostly building facilities, or at least upgrading them.

And the 2 or 3 fans I read on the D2 forum for West Florida seem to like being the big fish in a small, non cost effective pond. But the administration has to look at the big picture and do what they get paid to do. D2 football in their region, and especially Florida is almost non existent.
It's hard to schedule OOC games, and when you were in most of them, you end up paying for, even regional OOC games, if they play you at all.

So the administration should take that into account. There is a whole lot more D1 schools in the region than D2.

But like I said, they may like being a shark in a mud puddle.

I got a kick out of the UWF poster who absolutely was against an ASUN invite and wanted to wait 20 years until the SEC or ACC was ready to invite them. 03-lmfao As if magically a DII team is gonna get invited by the SEC or ACC... When has that ever happened? Now, I would totally understand them wanting to use the ASUN as a stepping stone to achieve their higher goals.

That's even more delusional than the fans of an FCS school thinking their school will be the AAC's 12th!

The picture have changed in D2 for the larger schools right now. Their peers in D2 is really non-exhistant. How long would Shorter be in D2? They can't count on Lee University and Christian Brothers to add football soon. Union Tennessee was looking into adding football, but no word yet. GSC in D2 is getting short on schools with football. In a few years, Conference Carolina would have enough schools to sponsor football, and North Greenville as football affiliate would be gone. Kennisaw State is a peer to West Georgia and Valdosta State. West Florida's peers are North Florida and FGCU.

Since the pandemic? The reason the mindset changed for all these large D2 schools is because of the small privates in their conferences are being hurt cashwise. Like Lion said, there are really no public Universities with football in the southeast at the D2 level except in the HBCU conference, and they are hurting cashwise as well. These schools can become the big fish in FCS as well.

Didn’t the JSU AD say there was no chance that would happen? So much for that.
