RE: Game Day Thread: UCF at Cincy
I think it is at 12:00 but there could be a game added this week.

i didn't see the game but Terry said that we were getting murdered on box outs. Called out JD multiple times. i believe JD is a future captain of this team. He needs to lead by example and that means boxing out.

Madsen had a great backdoor cut early in the game and Eason looks good (with room to improve) in the paint. I'd like to see more inside out, where our shooters can set their feet better.
Full disclosure: i haven't watched all their games. That said, of the games that i've seen/listened to, running a half court offense for them is a real challenge for them and that often, not always, results in poor shots or turnovers. i don't necessarily think wide open treys are a mortal sin all things considered. They need to make them more than they are at this current clip but if they up the 3 pt percentage it will stretch the defense and give our bigs more space.

I'm not too worried about their defensive rebounding ucf only rebounded 27% of their misses which would still be top 1/3 in the country in defensive rebounding rate. And over the course of the season defensive rebounding has been a strength for this team.

When I made that post about Barttorvik efficiency ratings the other day, we were first in the AAC in defensive rebounding rate.

Yea, Davenport particularly in the second half had his guy go right past him for easy offensive rebounds and didn't even look to get a body on him. It wasn't pretty.
If this team shoots 48% from the floor they will win most games. It helps a ton when they get 10 to 15 points out of Vogt.

Huge difference in playing with the lead/even all game then getting behind and trying to make a run at the end. I think we have UC opponents try to come back and fall short the last four games. UC was basically that team in the early part of the year.
The biggest positive is this staff seems to know now who to play and that halfcourt defense wins games. I am still concerned that way too many little things lead to negative swings and it almost cost them everyone one of the games the last four games. I still contend that the lack of on court leadership is the reason they have those dumb moments.

Davenport has to do a better job of boxing out.

Listening to the postgame yesterday we had more offensive rebounds than they did but they killed us in 2nd chance points. The stat given was 19 points on 10 offensive rebounds; almost 2 points per offensive rebound. That's crazy.

Bolded, agreed. KW for a senior is such a walking contradiction. He makes a brilliant play--sometimes spectacular, like no one else on this team can make. And within one minute has nearly negated it with a charge, a silly foul, or a turnover. Is Davenport as a sophomore now the emotional leader of this team?

This is a really good assessment of KW and why he frustrates some of us. Yes he has limitations but he absolutely can make plays nobody else on the roster can at this point. When he attacks with a purpose, doesn't settle for bad 2 point jumpers, doesn't stop the ball by dribbling to nowhere, he can be a huge asset. You just would hope a 4th year senior would understand his game better and what he needs to do to maximize his effectiveness. For this team to beat really good teams they need KW to be his best.

For an ace shooter, he doesn't take his time, and his FTs seem to get a lot of rim. Hit 3 big ones and a couple last game though.
Yea... I keep wanting them to go to MAW who has a season and a half track record of burying free throws and Masen has missed 3 or 4 of is 10 or 11 attempts this year. But it worked out. My guess is he hits them the most in practice.
Not sure if you heard the post game, but CJB said (paraphrasing) that teams know that MAW is the best FT shooter and they are now double teaming him, and Mason is the 2nd best FT shooter on the team. (at least in practice)

Mason has gotten it done at the free throw line with the game on the line 2 games in a row. Hard to argue with the decision to put him there.

UCF was not doubling MAW on that inbounds (or others--they got it to him with 20-some seconds left and he hit both FTs). And it appeared the play was to get it to Madsen. He's a good shooter, and it worked out, but . . .

I was just reporting what coach said when Dan specifically asked him why he didn't go to MAW in that situation. Maybe they weren't doubling MAW then, but he didn't want to take the chance that they might and drew it up for Madsen.
