Keeping those that could find a spot in a P5 is maybe another advantage of that process. Making sure a recruit is the type that will find a home here. I wonder how much of our recruiting is word of mouth from current players?

given the discussion that happened after this post, I wondered I didn't make this clear. I meant transfers OUT, not in.

Have there been transfers out that went on to do better than they were doing here?

RE: Coach TK comments on recruiting
I can think of only 4 players to transfer out and do well in the TK era.

Freelove to N. Alabama and then to UB where he had a very nice senior season (13.5 ppg)
Moss to UB where he MAC POY in 2015
Alderson to current DIII #1 ranked powerhouse Indiana Wesleyan
Stuckey Mosley had 2 really good years at James Madison (18.4 & 16.4 ppg)

Nick Rogers had a couple nice years as a backup G at IUPUI

Josh Lemons left and never played again.

Anyone else?????????? Please chime in.

The Moss thing always bothered me. UT doctors said he would never play again and he became a star at Buffalo

UT may have been overly cautious after one death and another career ending condition in it’s history. Didn’t end well for Moss, unfortunately, but not due to his health. Wonder if he ever ended up playing pro anywhere.

And I answer my own question-played pro in U S, Panama and France.

Malcom Griffin was First Team All-American in something called the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association and has had a long pro career.

Hayden Humes, 8 and 5 for UIC, shot nearly 40% from distance.

Malcom Griffin. Only guy I've ever seen who would log 40 minutes and have straight zeros in the box score.

I never understood this transfer to ukmc. If he would have gone somewhere not a lateral move, it would have made more sense.

I thought that he wanted to be closer to family. He’s from KC.

RE: Coach TK comments on recruiting
Great input from all of you on transfer out player situations.

Very interesting

I liked the backcourt combo of Holiday and Buckley.

I remember when Humes played here with UIC and we beat them pretty handily. He looked just as shaky with them.

Aubrey Williams had some game but he was not ever going to be in rotation here.

Steve Albrecht had game. I thought he was a keeper.

Then there was Jake Barnett who left after one season with Cross and went on to have three decent seasons at St Louis.

There have actually been quite a few who did well after moving on. That’s a good thing when all win.

Go Rockets!

If you can shoot you can play. Learn D but get shooters. Good shooters are more and more difficult to find in this dunk-a-holic world.

I loved the Ted Williams, Tim Selgo's of the world. Those teams could shoot. Recruit great shooters and they still have to be tough to win. That's the magic combination!!!! Easy to identify but tough to find.

I think TK realizes that ball movement, court awareness, and shooting can win a lot of games at UT. He's just settling in on the formula: position-less motion ball with great shooters and team helping D.

in a sense you are describing a modern version of the coach nichols teams.

He said they learned that making coachability-character a higher priority during recruiting than stats/apparent talent was a key for them. There was a band of players to choose from that they had a chance to sign. So instead of always picking/concentrating on who seemed like the most talented near the top of the band, they picked the ones who seemed more coachable and therefore could develop more as time went by.

The only problem with this approach is that, given the limited information a coach gets during recruiting, it is pretty subjective deciding who is going to be coachable or has high character. The kid's high school coach is unlikely to talk down his own player in this regard. That is where implicit bias can creep in, as it may have with Nichols, who seemed to see white kids as more coachable.

Yep, "implicit bias" is a hard measure. 03-wink

It could surely work the other way then, yes? Kid/family sees a person, makes judgements based on what they see, having limited information and all, they decide they do not want to play for that coach. Is there a record somewhere of not "white" kids that wanted to come to the University of Toledo to play for Coach Nichols, that didn't get to?

Albrecht left during the Cross Era. He would have probably have stayed here for Coach K.

You are correct I thought running him off may have been Coach K's biggest mistake as a Rocket coach.
