WAC Football 2021
The original plan was for schools to join the WAC in 2022. We all know what happens to the best laid plans of mice and men. In this instance the Remaining Southland Conference schools booted the Texas4 out immediately. The Texas schools are now scrambling to fill the 8 conference game void left by that decision.

Here are the current schedules of ex-SLC schools.

ACU- Southern Utah, SMU
Lamar-Tarleton, UTSA, Northern Colorado
SHSU- Dixie, Northern Arizona, Southeast Missouri
Stephen F Austin- Alabama A&M, Texas Tech, Miss Valley

The Texas schools will look to fill out their schedules by picking up games with new WAC rivals in need of games, a possible scheduling alliance with another conference or return games with the other Texas schools leaving the SLC.

Dixie State has 10 games scheduled and could possibly pick up one game in addition to SHSU who is already in their schedule.

Tarleton only shows 5 scheduled games, including Lamar. It’s possible the
Texas could schedule to remaining 3 Texas schools.

Southern Utah has three out of conference games scheduled and will remain in the Big Sky for 2021 where they will play an eight game conference schedule. It doesn’t appear they will be available for any games aside from the scheduled meeting with ACU.

NMSU is a FBS Independent so I didn’t look at their schedule. It isn’t likely they need any games but if they do happen to be in search of a last minute replacement hopefully they will give one of us a call.

Most FCS schools have already filled their 2021 schedules, making a scheduling alliance unlikely for 2021.

RE: WAC Football 2021
Things should be smoother by 2022. Hopefully by then the NCAA will have granted the WAC a waiver so that the winner of the conference automatically qualifies for the FCS play offs. There won’t be the last minute scramble to fill gaping holes in schedules. A scheduling alliance with another conference might be in place and at least one additional football playing member will be on board. Oh, and the long term plan may begin to come into focus as schools complete their appraisal of the costs and benefits of moving up to FBS.

For the fall 2021, We are scheduled to do some traveling in the fall. We will be going from left to right, Oregon, South Dakota and Georgia. We also have a trip to Lamar which was originally scheduled as a home and home. So far, the only home game is with Bethune-Cookman.

RE: WAC Football 2021
Two things...

1) What is the deal with Central Arkansas? I think they are in a similar situation as the four Texas schools booted from the league. Are they going to be able to put them into Big South football in '21 or can we expect UCA to be part of the WAC (or scheduling alliance?) this coming year?

2) Tarleton State and Dixie State already have relatively full schedules. Could the former SLC schools, Tarleton and Dixie State work out deals with some of the schools on those schedules to move dates, switch opponents, etc. to help all parties?

FBS schedules website only shows five games listed for Tarleton and 10 for Dixie. https://fbschedules.com/

I’m not sure about UCA’s schedule.

Dixie State in particular has a fair share of road games all bunched up.

Makes me wonder if some of the outgoing SLC schools would be willing to take some of those off Dixie State's hands in exchange for getting Dixie State on their schedule.

Personally, would love to see a matchup like Sam Houston State at Montana as part of a scheduling shuffle!

NMSU already has a 12 game schedule. However they play at Hawaii, which would allow them to add a 13th game. They haven't taken advantage of that recently, but there is a possibility they could do it to help out an incoming conference member if they could make it work financially.

Good point. I always forget about that. We already have Dixie on the schedule. Could we do 2 FCS games? Is that allowed?

NMSU can have two FCS games.

The only issue is tied to bowl eligibility. You can only count one FCS victory towards the six wins needed for bowl eligibility (however loosely defined that seems to be with COVID and to a lesser degree traditionally).

There's certainly been schools who have scheduled two FCS games in a single year.

NMSU is not going to play another FCS school and have to pay out another $250-$350,000.

I like the idea of the Texas 5 playing a double round robin for 2021.

The question will be where the BOTPW #2 lands if that occurs. Could be an interesting situation and if COVID doesn’t persist, a huge win for the home school in that scenario for the on campus game

Winner if the first BOTPW gets the home game for the rematch. It ups the stakes for winning the first round.

RE: WAC Football 2021
If the five institutions play a round robin, you have eight "league games" (four home/four away) for everyone minus SFA & SHSU which is four home/three away/one neutral or three home/four away/one neutral. You can likely play those games over the final eight or nine weeks of the season (based on when previously scheduled OOC games are) and then play three OOC games (which most of these schools already have).

Of note, both SFA & SHSU have two OOC home games in '21

Lamar has two road, one home (albeit home one is Tarleton) and ACU has two road (one of which is Southern Utah, interestingly)

I don’t know how Tarleton could make an 8 game double round robin work given their schedule already calls for 5 games. ,

Tarleton technically is one OOC game over the mark as Lamar could become a WAC league game (and potentially the first one of the new league).

09/04 - at Lamar
09/11 - at South Dakota State
09/25 - at Kennesaw State
10/09 - at Portland State
10/30 - Bethune-Cookman

Makes you wonder if one of the other Texas schools could work out an arrangement to play at SDSU, Kennesaw or Portland State as part of the re-working(s) of the schedule or help a current opponent end up on those schedules? We saw how things shifted so quickly this year, right?

Some news. FBSchedules confirms Tarleton and Dixie State will play WAC football this fall. Presume everyone is going to work with each other on some of these contracts and previously scheduled games

RE: WAC Football 2021
Most likely there will be a scheduling agreement between the Texas four, likely also Tarleton State and the ASUN three for this year. The Texas schools need 7 games and the ASUN need 8. playing each other fills the hole, whether under the banner of WAC football or not. That would provide all the schools with 7 more games.

Dixie State only needs two games, and they are a bit harder to travel to. It makes more sense for them to join football in 2022 as originally scheduled, along with Southern Utah.

Look for either a scheduling deal or formation of WAC football for a single year with ASUN schools, before transitioning to WAC members only in 2022.

FYI -

There's a whole thread about the ASUN / WAC arrangement at https://csnbbs.com/thread-915523.html

Includes this tweet which is a statement from the EKU athletic director that basically repeats what you just said and was also shared in that thread re: ASUN / WAC arrangement.
