Tangentially related, but Mario Mullen, who played BB here in the early 90s and is now the HC for Ocean Lakes, caught covid the first week of practice and is now in ICU.

Mario Mullen is one of the primary reasons we beat Vilanova in the NCAA Tournament. He was in Capel's dog house all year and then had a great game that night.

RE: COVID and basketball
Never knew he was in the dog house, but recall he had some major back issues that really slowed him down his senior year.

WE have had a lot of really good players pass thru ODU who rarely get mentioned but were very important players during their time. Mario is one of them.

Other than that tweet, no. Does the conference have a protocol for making up missed games?

I don't think anyone is jumping to any conclusions since we have only been asking if anyone knows anything more about this.

Unfortunately they have a point. The way this year has been handled is an embarrassment.

Mullen was a huge part of that 3 overtime NCAA team. I believe he was an undersized power forward that had to rebound because of The Big O blowing out his knee early in the year. Jones, Mullen, Sessoms, and David Harvey made that team very special.

One of my favorite teams. Harvey played with a ton of heart and I think was a very undersized center.

So it seems.

Athletics is an adjunct to the overall academic mission of the school, and leadership has every right (and in fact a responsibility) to subordinate the interests of the school's athletic programs if they threaten the health of the interests of the institution, actual or financial.

ODU is not alone in treating the virus - - which is very real, at least for the vulnerable among us - - as preemptive of athletics. How could it not? But I also think that there is a serious risk that the school will end up looking like a unreliable patsy - - to its students, to its fans, to its present and prospective future conference mates - - if it becomes apparent that the lockdowns were politically driven. ODU's more-protective-than-most response in hindsight will viewed, at least by some, that as a betrayal of trust.

Is this comment too political? If so, take it down. I won't be offended.

Or is it just that you disagree? If so, think about what is best for the school - - which most of you have far greater ties to than I. I am no longer a football season ticket holder, and have no plans on renewing. I am sure that I will renew for next year's men's basketball season. I love the sport too much. But it will take a while to get the bad taste out of my mouth for what was done to all of us this year.

To be clear none of this is specific to ODU, which of course MUST comply with the directives of our spineless governor. But the school in my view hasn't shown much care for what is best for the students and fans. I'm sad about that.

Maybe 6'7 or 6'8 and limit offensive skill, but he was a beast on the boards and on defense.

I’m no fan of the governor either, but it could be worse. California is a disaster and at least he isn’t that loony toon in Michigan. I guess I am somewhat thankful that at least my son is able to play soccer.

I thought the requirement to "pause" the program for COVID was dictated by the conference. The only control the governor has is how many fans can attend events.
