Now we'll see if he's a product of Coors or legit. (I'm betting on the latter)

St Louis is adding another year to the end of Arenado's contract -- another sign that everyone assumes there will be a universal DH.

you would really think so. Especially when they can start to get fans back in there.

No. In fact, the Cards are giving him another opt out after 2022. May not amount to much as his projections slightly underperform his contract value, but it’s leverage anyway. Read somewhere it’s likely the extra option year was thrown in to keep the union happy about the deferred compensation.

when you factor the money going to St Louis from Colorado- he'll almost certainly beat his contract value. Only need like 19.5 WAR these next 6 years.

1 thing that is really promising about this- the fact that it was proposed on Friday and we're just hearing about it 2 days later.

It's a sweet deal for St Louis, no doubt.

It's a salary dump for Colorado, and not even a good one considering they have to send money to St Louis.

It's also an illustration of why the MLBPA doesn't want to make expanded playoffs permanent. Two teams made the playoffs in 2020 with sub-.500 regular season records, and the Astros won two playoff series after their sub-.500 regular season. Why spend to try to win 95 games in a full season when you can make the playoffs with 78 wins? Go ahead and trade your highest-paid player, or let him walk as a free agent, and replace him with a bargain-priced free agent or some guy who hit well in AAA.

well 1 of those playoff teams was due to them taking 2nd place teams due to schedules, and the other was the 8th team in the league(talk that it'd be 7 teams per league not 8).

It'll be interesting.

RE: MLB 2020/21 Hot Stove Thread
seems like it's going to be rejected

and here's big part why.....
The proposal would also give Commissioner Rob Manfred expanded authority to suspend the season, according to the two people and two additional people with direct knowledge of the proposal

MLBPA would be fools to give Manfred authority to suspend the season and cut off their paychecks.

yeah. A definite poison pill.

Do the owners think the players are fools?

You’re not wrong but this isn’t my point. For Arenado to opt out he has to believe teams will think his current contract undervalues his performance. The Cards getting a discount doesn’t change his total compensation. At $8MM/WAR, he’s gonna need teams to think he can generate more than 25 WAR in the next 6 years (rather, 20.5 over the next 5 years once this season is thru). It’s a tall order.
