I think WIU is a must grab to give football a little more of a cushion.

Beyond that, they need to pursue whatever expansion move will keep Belmont the happiest as they are the biggest flight risk as they are attractive to not 1 but 2 other leagues with better basketball.

I don’t know who Belmont would want that would be good for basketball though—NKU, Libscomb, Bellarmine?

NKU definitely isn’t attainable for the OVC, and Lipscomb/Bellarmine might not be either.

Assuming Lipscomb/Bellarmine wouldn’t switch, the OVC’s options are in this order:
1 WIU
2 USI
3 Chicago St

Seems to me that the OVC is--- FRESH OUTTA LUCK!! (cue song by Demob Happy)

WIU’s paying for a lot of flights/long bustrips as a school in budget trouble. They pretty much have to take an OVC invitation to keep their athletic department viable.

The OVC has had 12 members since Belmont joined in 2012 though. It's not like the conference had much room to spare.

Football will not be bad since bustrips to Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois and Illinois State and with Saint Thomas coming in? That is 4 places they travel by bus.
OVC? Eastern Illinois is the only bus travel. Joining OVC=spending more money to travel. The MVFC schools need to break away and formed their own conference and maybe try to go FBS route as a whole, and grab Murray State as number 12.

Right. But had they gone to 14 they wouldn’t have the ASUN tearing apart their conference right now.

Perhaps, perhaps not. They would have been criticized for being "bloated" just like the A-10 is criticized, however.

I remember that. Right around the time they screwed over UNA.

If the OVC backfills with WIU, we could see the Summit backfill with Northern Colorado (which would put football in the WAC), and then see the Big Sky backfill with Seattle.

Let the dominos fall...

OVC will be losing its AQs in beach volleyball (down to 4 teams) and men's tennis (down to 5 teams). MTEN could perhaps merge into the Southland, or the other way around, as the SLC is in the same boat.

Beach VB actually just separated from the ASUN last year for the first time. With only Austin Peay, Morehead State, UT Martin and affiliate member Chattanooga remaining, those programs may end up reabsorbing themselves back into the ASUN.

If I were Bellarmine or Lipscomb and an OVC invite was extended, I’d take it. The ASUN has football driving the bus now. As long as Belmont is in the OVC it will be a basketball centric conference.

Augustana might get the call up to the Summit that they’ve wanted if WIU leaves.

RE: OVC official response to departure - Next Steps
This is for beach volleyball. There are no divisions yet since there are still not many schools sponsor the sport yet, and some schools who had it either dropped the sport or closed down. I put the independent schools not in a conference as affiliates to other conferences. I added SBC as a new conference for beach volleyball to easily put all the schools in a lot less crowded conference.

WAC could look like this for Beach Volleyball.
ACU
SFAU
grand Canyon
Sam Houston State
Boise State as an affiliate
San Jose State as an affilliate
CSU-L.A.
Concordia-Irvine
Colorado Mesa

Southland:
New Orleans
Nicholls State
Houston Baptist
UT A&M-C. C.
affiliates:
Missouri State
TCU
Tulane
Kingsville

ASUN:
Austin Peay State future
UCA
EKU
Jacksonville State
UNA
North Florida
affiliates:
UAB
College of Charleston
FAU
FIU
S. Miss.

SBC:
Coastal Carolina
Georgia State
La.-Monroe
affiliates:
Florida State
LSU
Mercer
Miss. State
South Carolina
Hendrix

OVC:
Chattanooga
morehead State
Tenn.-Martin
Lincoln Memorial
tusculum
Principia
UNC-Wilmington
Carson-Newman
Catawba
Stevenson

Coastal Collegiate Sports Association split from ASUN for the non-football ASUN schools.
FGCU
Jacksonville
Stetson
Eckerd
Erskine
Florida Southern
Palm Beach Atlantic
Saint Leo
Spring Hill
Tampa
Huntingdon
LaGrange

I could move Mercer from SBC to be with like minded privates like Stetson.

Just a wild thought, but if the Southland and/or OVC get bled any deeper in football, does anyone think that one conference or the other might take on the refugees of the other as football affiliates?

The one that didn't have the official sponsorship would need to add another team sport like soccer. Right now both only have baseball

They have 5 soccer teams among the two conferences—maybe one league sponsors football and the other soccer.

RE: OVC official response to departure - Next Steps
The OVC should stand.

We are seeing FCS conferences trend toward 6 or 7 as that is enough to get you an AQ. More may look snazzier, but it doesn't get you an extra bid. This is becoming critical as two more conference appear reducing the at-large.

The OVC stand at 7, the SLC stand at 8 (down from 13), the Big South drop down to 7, the ASUN start at 6 (in a year), the WAC come in at 7. The NEC at 8, the Patriot at 7. Even the Big sky dropped from 13 to 11.

Bigger is not better in the AQ dominated playoff access.
