Hybrid ASUN / WAC Football League for '21
We have said that creativity will reign supreme in '21 for football in light of the recent announcement(s) about league membership...

I am not a subscriber to EXTRA POINTS but seeing some social media chatter that the ASUN & WAC are exploring a 'hybrid' league in '21 per Matt Brown of Extra Points to ensure the automatic bid to the FCS playoffs for next year and to help these school(s) with scheduling.

The deadline to submit a request for an automatic bid for '21 is fast approaching.

Multiple leagues - ASUN, WAC, Big South, OVC and Southland - impacted by the decisions in recent weeks pertaining to new league membership.

Dixie State's athletic director acknowledged on social media that they are not sure if they can be "full participants" in the WAC schedule due to the amount of contracts that they are linked to.

From an FCS perspective, this could be a fun one-year league! The WAC's new schools from Texas, Tarleton, Central Arkansas, Jacksonville State and Eastern Kentucky. Am I missing someone if Dixie State is not in the mix? That would give each of the schools seven conference in '21 and the league would have an automatic bid as there'd be six "eligible" schools plus Tarleton.

Should add that I have also seen comments that the ASUN schools would perhaps just compete in the Big South in '21 and this is a non-issue but Matt Brown usually knows something.

What a total mess for Dixie State. Why can't they reschedule some of these games for 22 or 23?

Dixie State had to operate as an independent and schedule as many games as they could going forward. I cannot blame them at all!

And you mention '22 and '23. If you include Sam Houston State in '21 (pre-signed contract), Dixie State has 10 games next year and then it's at least eight games in '22 and '23.

They've actually got a mess to deal with all these games and probably decent buyouts on a few of them. They'll either have to pay their way out, see if some of the WAC schools will take the contracts (which is a possibility with the amount of OOC games now available on those schedules) or get really creative!

I knew that they were indy but how do you schedule like this and not be clued in with what the WAC was planning to do. This WAC FCS thing just didn't happen in the last month is was a year or so long process...

Why wouldn’t ASUN teams simply continue to play football in the Big South until they have enough playoff eligible teams on board to form a separate conference? The Big South agreement is already in place and seems less complicated than a temporary deal with the WAC.

Dixie State was scheduling far out in front of the WAC/FCS development in the background. Most of these games were locked in before SFA & SHSU initiated the conversation... I cannot fault them for the issue(s) that they are in particularly as they made the move up into Division I and wanted to have a secure transition.

The recent Tarleton/Portland St contract is what caught me off-guard since that was signed and delivered around the time this whole thing was going on.

Your guess is as good as mine?

Matt Brown is the one that indicated that this could be a thing, but you are correct that the Big South could certainly figure a way to wiggle the three new schools (UCA, EKU & JaxSt) into their scheduling at this point even if its not a complete round robin.

Perhaps the scheduling is a bit more complicated than we think? If the AQ deadline is rapidly approaching, it will all work itself out in the next two weeks anyway!

Matt Brown has good sources inside the WAC. If he’s reporting this as an option I suspect it’s at least something the WAC is attempting to work out.

That is true, but everyone went ahead believing 2022 would be the year, not 2021.

When you are an indy, you have to do what you have to do to schedule games. This is a very fluid situation and kudos to DSU for scheduling all these games. NMSU has full schedules all the way out to 2024. They can't afford to sit around and hope they are in a conference at some point. If they got an invite or the WAC goes FBS, they will adjust accordingly.

Dixie St and NMSU are in two different situations as Indy's and I get that the FCS league got bumped up a year even still there should have been more wiggle room than current times allow.

I’m appreciative of Dixie State’s willingness to even attempt to juggle their schedule to accommodate conference mates who are arriving a year early.

I like the idea of the Texas 5 and the ASUN schools making a scheduling alliance for 2021 so they are guaranteed a bid to the FCS playoffs.

The ASUN better get their 6th football school lined up soon though

I haven't posted on an idea I had just because I even thought it was out there... I'll get to that in a min.

I know I've heard somewhere that there may be a football only member coming to the ASUN. Dont know who would be in that position, maybe the Big South is pawning off RMU or something? Who knows.

Back to the other.

I have thought about how the ASUN would even consider FBS, I have no doubt all the ASUN football schools have aspirations of FBS, but the ASUN cant just move per NCAA.

But the WAC can, they still have FBS rights that haven't been sold.

So I wonder if the two commissioners have been working together on this... I dont believe in coincidence, and its awful convenient for both the ASUN and WAC to be doing what they are doing, at the same time basically and talking about FBS.

So I wonder if they plan on having a FBS hybrid football league. With the ASUN under the WAC umbrella?

It could work like two separate conferences. But have a bowl tie in were the WAC winner plays the ASUN winner. Unless one of the winners gets a NY6 or better (unlikely) opportunity.

Just a thought...

I do not think it's a stretch by any means. The question will be how many WAC and/or ASUN members are able to make the move to FBS and if that's truly the desired destination for the league(s).

It is hard to believe that the WAC or ASUN schools would have a partial jump. It's either "all in" or "all out" because leaving behind say a Southern Utah as an FCS Independent (when they could have just stayed in the Big Sky) while the rest of the league makes the move to FBS wouldn't be right.

Having a WAC western and eastern divisions help with building rivalries from the all sports editions of the league, help with the FBS for the ASUN (as you mentioned) and also aids with scheduling (will be crucial for these schools to have eight game slates with four home/four away) from the get go, particularly during the transition year or two. Could certainly create for a "softer landing" for the schools...

And from the CFP perspective, there'd just be one league to give $$$ to and not two leagues. I think that's going to be an issue with any of this WAC/ASUN to FBS talk in the first place!

I think all of the ASUN schools that play scholarship football have higher aspirations for sure. And we will have to see who else the ASUN gets. But there are a couple of WAC schools that I look at and question if they actually could do it.

I’ve wondered about my own school, ACU. Last time I checked only 4 FBS schools had an enrollment of less than 5,000- the three service academies and Tulsa. As I recall only 10 schools enrolled less than 10,000. I don’t believe any of the private schools with a student population of less tha 10,000 had an endowment of under a billion. ACU is approaching half that amount, which is not shabby at all but not in the same league as Tulsa or others. ACU’s strategic plan calls for increasing the selectivity of undergrads rather than growing admission. We do plan to grow grad enrollment mostly through on line study but this growth will be incremental rather than exponential like GCU or Liberty.

Our administration may have a plan in mind for how a small private school with an endowment the size of ours can compete at the FBS level but I’m skeptical.

I agree that for the WAC, it's all schools FBS or none. I think the requirement for an FBS conference is 8 FB playing schools and 6 have to be full members. So it's possible that ASUN schools could be just FB affiliates.

McNeese is Captain of a sinking ship. It might be time to plan an exit. McNeese would give a boost to WAC FCS football but their NET ranking would hurt WAC basketball.
