RE: men's basketball at ohio
26-6 rebounding edge at halftime is one of the most ridiculous stats I've seen in awhile. How does a team only get 6 rebounds in a half.

I wonder if any other pro team won a championship and then moved? NFL wasn’t much of a league back then but still!! Only in Cleveland.

RE: men's basketball at ohio
I think there have been others, Burden, but I'd have to do some research. You are right, the NFL really didn't "arrive" until the televised 1958 championship game between the Colts and Giants that went into overtime. Then, in the 1960's Pete Rozelle really marketed the Hell out of the league. The AFL also spurred interest.

Way too many turnovers, but when you double the other team on the boards you can get away with it, it seems. I's like to see the free throw percentage at least 70%, but other than those two things a really good effort.

RE: Browns

My grandfather had "Return to Glory" from 1965 and I read through parts of it. The jist was that no one cared about the Rams moving because they already knew the Browns were coming and there wasn't perceived to be a difference between the NFL and new AAFC. Given that the Browns won the NFL Championship in 1950 once the AAFC and NFL merged, that is a pretty sound argument.

nice win! :)
the team looked really good - clicking on all cylinders 04-cheers
ohio U announcer Russ Eisenstein said we had great energy & gelled - i agree!

this team is talented. they play hard & they play with intensity. we have size. we have great court awareness. we are a great offensive rebounding team. we have players who can knock-down the 3.

re. RAMS game .. packers o-line was the difference. rodgers had all day. not having a healthy aaron donald hurt the rams. packers defense stepped-it up when they had to.

back to the flashes: tough stretch of games coming-up. playing teams tied or ahead of them in the standings. akron OT win today vs toledo: wow!

question: schedule says we play at akron on sat, feb 6th. we already played at akron. soooo we play them twice away this year, interesting. 07-coffee3

that player we got from Duquesne (transfer) wow! seems to be super awesome pt guard, but we already have a super awesome pt guard. hmmm

a good sports week for sure:

Impressive road win today. Malique Jacobs appears to be fitting in nicely & being a solid starter. I would say even an improvement over Anthony Roberts. BTW, AR has played sparingly with the Bonnies & was a DNP the last two games.

Guessing that Akron game will either be switched to Kent, or replaced w/another team -- probably the first.

As for the 2 PG ... looks like the perfect pickup. A proven starter who seems like a mini Porrini at both ends of the court. W/his injury issues (knees) I don't see why the two can't co-exist at the position, shy of ego problems. Santiago has been a pure blessing this season and Kent would be struggling bigtime without him ... but ... find me one other DI team in the country with a starting PG that doesn't average double figures ... particularly on a winning team.

This is a 21-22 problem, - if it's a problem at all - not one for now.

RE: men's basketball at ohio
Bopol, you are correct. Cleveland was happy to get the Browns lead by the already-famed Paul Brown. The Rams never drew well in Cleveland, and they would have drawn even fewer fans with competition from the AAFC Browns. Interestingly, the 1945 Rams were quarterbacked by Bob Waterfield and the 1946 Browns by Otto Graham. Both are in the Hall of Fame, and deservedly so. No Cleveland team since Graham retired has been quarterbacked by a Hall of Fame quarterback. And I really don't see Baker Mayfield, good as he is, breaking that 65 year drought.

Only two teams are ahead of KSU in the loss column, and both by only one game. I think this year's team has as good a chance as anyone to win the MAC. It's wide open, IMO, among several teams.

I don’t need my grandfather I just missed seeing it in person. You are right though. The Rams leaving Cleveland was more a reflection on the NFL than Cleveland.

The birth of children and the repeated death of Jack Daniels has slowed my memory. What was the name and role of that Ohio poster who used to drop in with subtle digs and pseudo intellect?

One comment on the 2 PG thing...under Sendy we've run 2 PG lineups a ton. Avery and Zabo, Avery and Williams are the two combos that immediately come to mind. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Your backup PG is the second guy you trust running the offense, so he's probably worth having in your top 5 in minutes and thus spends a lot of time on the court with your lead pg.

I'm not thinking "will we be able to play two pgs together next year?". I'm thinking can we play 3? Because right now we are very much a 2 PG team. Santiago and Jacobs are 2nd and 4th on the team in minutes, they're tied for the team lead in assists with 35, and have nearly identical turnovers (18 and 19). If both of those two, Nuga, and Carry all stick around for next year we're going to have a logjam of playmaking guards... Which is certainly not a bad thing. Of course, I believe anyone can transfer and be immediately eligible, so nothing is a sure thing.

Then there's Sullinger too.

Of course, I believe anyone can transfer and be immediately eligible, so nothing is a sure thing.

Then there's Sullinger too.

Here's the deal ... Santiago and Carry have different strengths while Nuga and Jacobs have different strengths. With the majority of college teams playing 3-guard lineups for extended periods I don't think there will be much problem getting all four 25-min a game. Of those 4 Santiago and Jacobs seems to bend more toward being specialists; Santiago as easily the best 3-point shooter in the bunch and Jacobs as a defensive stopper, although Carry is supposed to be strong on that end as well. Santiago and Carry are strong assist guys as well. Nuga is a strong rebounder. Lots of variety in that bunch

As for Sullinger, indeed all the freshmen, in a perfect world they would all redshirt although that is easier said than done. However, Sullinger should definitely see advantage to it and the 6-10 kid as well, especially if Kent brings in a juco big to replace KB. Rollins, the 6-6 wing, is a big unknown to me who may be able to push for minutes especially if he can score, but may also be better served with a redshirt if he's not getting at least 8-10 minutes a game.

Like most teams, with the extra year of eligibility Kent should be deep and experienced next season if the bulk of their seniors (DP, Nuga, Beck) return and there are no more transfers.

Also ... anybody else noticing 6-4 Hernandez is solidly in the rotation as a redshirt freshman. He hasn't made much of an offensive impact, yet, but clearly Kent coaches have no issues with him on the court. Put him in that backcourt/wing mix as well for next season. Lots to think about for sure ...

Finally ... in the purest sense, Kent has had only one team that I've seen over the last 20 years with two - true - point guards. Huffman and Mitchell. Kent may have had a lot of guys (Booman, Zabo, Brewer, Rod Sherman, others) who could give you solid minutes at the point but 2 TRUE point guards ???? Mitchell and Huffman are it.

Anti-Zip, another example is Huffman and Mitchell, In fact, Mitchell was the primary point guard most of their careers before their roles were reversed.

Speaking of Sullinger I saw that the other day he lead his team to a win over a pretty strong Canton McKinley team:

THOMAS WORTHINGTON 73, McKINLEY 63 Kent State recruit Jalen Sullinger scored 27 points as the host Cardinals topped the Bulldogs in a matchup of 2020 district champions. The first quarter ended with the two teams tied 12-12, but Worthington took control by outscoring McKinley 18-6 during the second quarter. Kobe Johnson led McKinley (8-3) with 19 points and four 3-pointers. Ronnell “Tae” Perie scored 15 points on five 3-pointers, while Brent Walker added 14 points for the Bulldogs. Sullinger, the son of former Ohio State player JJ Sullinger, made 10 of 13 free throws as Worthington made 21 of 26 overall. Joey Zalewski scored 13 points for the Cardinals and Furman recruit Tyrese Hughey added 12.

Nice. Beating a Kobe Johnson team is no joke. He's signed with USC.

All I can say is when I see the name Sullinger, I think high basketball IQ. If he is anything like his relatives, he will get the most out of his God-given abilities.

There was NEVER a need to justify the way he played his position and understood his role. He was so much more than a guy who was just out there running around.
