Unless there is some serious private fund raising going on in Monroe there's little wonder the program is in dire straits.

Outside of Central link it's just farmers in Monroe.

I worked up there for 5 years the area and students rather support the tigers on Saturday. Not saying Lafayette is much better but there is a reason why LSU is so butt hurt with UL fans

Nothing but farmer’s besides CenturyLink? Seriously? LOL

Nothing other than Century Link might be a bit strong, but here is a list of major employers lost over the years that employed a lot of people. Companies that may have replaced jobs are no where near in means of salaries, benefits, and key decision making powers. Additionally, even though Delta moved out a long time ago, it did host its annual meetings there until shareholders revolted.

State Farm call center
GM/Delphi
Ouachita National Bank
Georgia – Pacific
West Rock
Natural Gas companies major operations have moved out.
Population decline when others cities are growing.

The key personnel lost from these employers at one time were benefactors to the school and athletic program.

They don't pay cost of attendance at all? I've heard of some schools paying a percentage but not paying at all is a huge disadvantage.

Not a penny compared to UL who pays upwards of 10k a year to a player. How are you going to compete against that

Really, $10k a year??? I didn’t realize the COA was that high for schools. I have no idea what South pays, or any other school. I’m surprised it’s that much.

Let’s all hope Bowden takes them to be kings of the SBC West and then in a few years the TV revenue and increased attendance makes them a more attractive athletic program in the conference for basketball and other sports. I see it now

ULM wins 3 straight SB west titles from like 2023-2025 and gets our first NY6 bid in one of those years and all the rest of us looks dumb having doubted them.

We should take bets on who wins the SB first of the 4: ULM, Texas State, USA, and Ga St. (Yes I know ULM has won once before long ago)

Agreed, GaSt has def had the most success out of this group, unfortunately for me.

That's the number the AD said last year

Is that cash payment over schooarships??? Next thing we are going to have is a “Cost of Attendance Cap” like a salary cap, for each sport. That seems crazy to pay a million dollars to your football players.

Yep it's $11,228 after scholarship

ULL does not pay $11,228 in COA. I believe Auburn pays the most in the SEC with around $6000. Kentucky is below $3,000.

Yes they do. And also billy Napier turned down the Dallas Cowboys job AND the Papacy to stay in Lafayette.

Why would the AD make up that number in an interview

UL was paying over $5,800 6 years ago

Maybe you are confused. COA is determined by the financial aid office at each university. The cost to attend ULL has not doubled in the last 6 years.

Off campus athletes receive roughly $1300/month at UL. Now you can do the math for yourself if you want, but I can help you out. $1300 times 4.5 months is $5850 per semester. Now for 2 semesters that brings that total to $11,700 for full scholarship athletes.

It’s one reason I chuckle when people say athletes should be paid. Those morons should get bent. Athletes are getting paid. Especially at some programs that pay full COA. That total and the total amount of the free tuition is a damn $60k a year job.

The math is close if not extremely accurate.

From the NCAA.
Q: Do all college athletes receive the same amount of money?

No. Subject to federal guidelines, financial aid officers at each school determine the cost of attendance. Additionally, based on each school’s policies, a student’s cost of attendance can be adjusted based on his or her individual circumstances such as transportation, childcare needs and unusual medical expenses.

Q: Are there guidelines on how cost of attendance should be spent?

The additional funds are intended to cover the real costs of attending college not covered by the previous definition of a full scholarship, which included tuition, room and board, required fees and books.

Q: Who manages the distribution of the money to the athletes?

Each school distributes the money according to its individual financial aid policies.

The guidelines seem pretty shady with no real guidance. So if you really want a player, you can just offer that kid all kind of money with no real oversight from the NCAA....

I REALLY like our coaching staff. It’s a mix of your future stars and older experienced name coaches with P-5 head coaching and coordinator experience. Definitely not a staff I thought would ever be at ULM. I will try to fill in some blanks tonight.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE COA
As dictated by Congress, the COA is the average cost to attend for one academic year (fall through spring). It includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, transportation, and personal expenses. Colleges adjust the COA yearly to reflect changes to these costs.

HOW THE COA DRIVES YOUR FINANCIAL AID
The college subtracts your Expected Family Contribution from the COA to calculate your need for financial aid. The higher the COA, the more aid you will be eligible for.

COA has nothing to do with athletic departments. As shown above, Federal guidelines determine COA for financial aid.

Since athletics receive free tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board their COA check covers transportation and personal expenses getting from their home town to the university.

RE: ULM’’s future

I really was not that aware that ULM had so few winning seasons I guess because I always saw them upsetting good teams or playing good teams really close

the lack of overall winning seasons is something to address for sure along with budget and fan support, but when you compare ULM over the last 20 seasons to one of the preeminent CUSA programs and probably one of the very top G5 programs out there with a massive budget, the best recruiting grounds in the USA, yuge fan support, and just everything going for them and a real sleeping giant well ULM compares pretty favorably

there is .6 average wins per season difference and .25 average losses per season difference

there is a big bowl game difference, but that is because top teams that are CUSA powerhouses and G5 standouts get bowl bids even with losing seasons even if they do get throttled on those bowl games continuously

so really ULM is just a 9 win season or two and a bowl win or two away from having the same on the field results as a G5 powerhouse/preeminent CUSA program and probably one of if not the top G5 to P5 expansion candidate when that time comes
