Well that’s one way to finally get the MBB championship trophy back to Harrisonburg ...

Almost guaranteed there will be little to no fans. So, honestly, it makes sense to have it in the most state of the art facility in the league, which for better or worse is in Harrisonburg.

Also, DC has tighter restrictions than a lot of other states, which could make hotel/gameday/travel logistics tougher.

That's the entire nut. DC is shut down. Masks required indoors and outdoors. Think about the set up with no hotels nearby, etc. Much simpler to put everyone in a very rural/small town area like Harrisonburg and use their facilities for the athletes. I assume it will include using their food service/catering, etc.

I was in DC Monday. No mask outside was no issue.

Maybe that is exactly what IS the issue.

According to the science, not so much.

I don’t have an opinion to offer. Just wanted to share that my experience in DC conflicted directly with the alleged outdoor mask use requirement.

Probably because being in Harrisonburg is more or less naturally a bubble. Much lower probability of running into another human being than DC. Cows have yet to be found COVID positive...

Yeah, I'll echo what you said, I live in VA about 2 miles from DC, and you can walk around DC without a mask.

I should've been a little more clear in my post, while DC has tighter restrictions than the state of VA, it's not on total lockdown. There will (and should) be virus related hurdles no matter where the tournament is held. Still, if I were planning a conference tournament, I would rather it be held in a more rural location like Harrisonburg than in the middle of a city.

The move could also have something to do with no fans in the stands. Without gate receipts and concession sales, the DC venue might not have been interested in hosting the tournament. JMU can offer the venue for free and then just charge for game day staffing.

Or there was a guranteed minimum gate that we knew wouldn't be met and we didn't want to pay. Either way, it should work out well.

I think the main driver was multiple facilities. With the AUB and the old Convo you have 2 arenas capable of hosting tournament games. The AUB has an attached practice gym and we also have additional practice courts in Godwin and UREC.

These facts clearly support the move if they are utilized for the CAA tournament as this flexibility did not exist in DC arena.

Assuming this was the intent, this shows good disaster recovery planning. Extra courts as a backup in the event of exposure, being able to potentially clean one court while using another. All of those are good reasons to have the tournament at JMU.

Agreed.

It's unfortunate how rare my next sentence is. The CAA made a good decision
