Skip all the primaries in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, etc. nothing but campaigning in NYC, LA, Chicago, etc. Nowhere else matters.

You want to change the Constitution for popular vote? Have at it and get 38 states to agree. That is how you would bring it about.

The interesting thing that gets ignored is that most democracies choose their chief executives indirectly. Westminster parliamentary democracies do it inherently. Those that do direct election tend to require a majority, with a runoff if nobody gets 50%+1. That means, among other things, that Hillary would not necessarily have "won" a popular vote in 2016. It would have been a runoff, with results ultimately depending on how the libertarians went.

One other interesting thing is that most of the better world leaders tend to have been elected indirectly, while many of the ones elected directly tend to be pretty despicable characters.

Nah, it was because of slavery. EC gave slave owners more power. If we are going to keep this relic then we need more House members or shift the number of electoral college votes to represent the proportion of their population. California should have 200+ electoral votes if Wyoming gets 3.
