#2 is insane. Saban looks way younger than Bryant did at that age.

That's modern nutrition and exercise. The other night, Tom Brady tied George Blanda as the oldest QB to win a playoff game, and they showed a picture of Brady (now) and one of Blanda in 1970, when he was 43 and won his playoff game. Blanda looked 65.

And modern photography I'd kind of guess.

Also perspective. E.g., I remember when Bear Bryant won his final bowl game and then died shortly thereafter in early 1983. He was 69, which seemed positively ancient to me then, as I was 18 at the time.

Now, evaluating Saban at 69, I'm 56 myself so 69 doesn't seem that darn old to me, LOL.

In the CFP, I would rank this team 3rd, behind last year's LSU at #1 and 2018 Clemson at #2.

yeah for sure. But it is remarkable how guys that were 70 back then just look much older than 70 yr olds today. 70 yr olds today look like 55-60 yr olds back then.

I remember 20 years ago when Saban came to LSU from Michigan State, he was regarded here as a kind of "blah" hire in the wake of Gerry DiNardo. Many in Baton Rouge pointed out that his 5-year record with the Spartans was basically the same as DiNardo's at LSU. In their first years, in 1995, LSU beat Michigan State in the Independence Bowl.

It was really just timing - Dinardo had won his first three years then fell off. Saban got the LSU job only because of the 1999 season. His first four at MSST he went 6-5, 6-6, 7-5, and 6-6. He was on the hot seat in 1999 and went 10-2 thanks to Plaxico Burress. That's what got him the LSU job.

LSU went 8-4 in 2000, winning the Peach Bowl before it was a major bowl. LSU fans saw improvement and were reasonably happy, but nobody had any inkling what was coming for Saban - or LSU, as truth is, the foundation Saban laid in Baton Rouge echoes through the success they have had the past 20 years too, long after he left.

The WW2 through the early Vietnam generation smoked and drank heavily. Going to the gym wasn't a thing for most. They fell in love with processed foods. As a kid I loved Swanson Chicken Pot night and tater tots.

Smoking ages you quicker than just about anything.

where I think Saban will get a lot of credit is him changing with the times. We're going to look back at things and him hiring Lane Kiffin is going to be one of the ultimate game changers. 5 SEC titles in the 7 years since then and 3 Nattys.

Yes, when I was a kid in the 1970s, fear of a heart attack was basically something every middle-class man worried about - at 40! Most 40 year old men then had pot bellies and as you say had smoked and drank and eaten high cholesterol foods all their lives. "Exercise" if it existed at all was "jogging around the block with the guys" before or after work.

I'm 56 and have no worries about heart attacks at all.

There’s something to modern lifestyles with diets, healthcare, medication, and the effects of select substances, like tobacco and alcohol, but also other air-born substances like the smoke and fumes from factories, or the intensity of manual labor on the body.

You can still see what medications and booze can do to a body under physical stressors in pro wrestlers. They age horribly. I think steriods might be a big contributor to it, too.

Honestly, growing up, and this was the mid-late 90’s, but to beef up, kids on our high school football team used to load up on whatever nutrient/muscle-building stuff you could grab at GNC. Before there was a big push to get that crap off the shelves because it was pretty much steriods and other toxic stuff in there. A few of the guys who were on the o-line...not only got huge in high school (and I went to elementary and junior high with them, and lined up against them in middle school ball; they weren’t giants then), but were balding big time in their early 20’s and just looked old.

Back to the game, some interesting conversation about Justin Fields’ pro stock after last night. That shot he took...I know someone had to lose last night, but from the highlights, he didn’t look good. He isn’t supposed to be Trevor Lawrence, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he drops to third or fourth QB picked now instead of what seemed like the obvious second and top-5 spot. Has me wondering if were to drop, and people attribute it to the Clemson game, do players rethink playing in the playoffs?

Meanwhile, Smith was all the talk about his positioning with the Eagles. Dude might not be available at 6 now. So, counterpoint to the impact of the playoff performances if one gets hurt. Smith is going to be can’t miss now because of last night.

I wonder about the changing with the times though. Many don't know it, but the 2012 national champs, arguably the prototypical "defense-focused" Saban Alabama team, scored more points per game than the 2015 and 2017 national champs, the ones with the revamped Kiffin offenses.

No question, Alabama has changed mightily since Kiffin, with a high-flying pass attack they didn't have before. But they still scored a lot of points with those "cro-magnon" teams of 2009 - 2013 as well.

Smith is amazing - and LSU fans around here are still angry and perplexed that a kid like that who grew up 30 miles from Baton Rouge first committed to Georgia and then to Alabama - but you have to worry about his size. He is so thin, you have wonder if he can stand up to NFL hits. Yes, a guy like Justin Jefferson just had a great rookie year at 6'1" like Smith, but he weighs 205 pounds. Smith probably weighs 170 in his uniform.

I'm not trying to be a downer for you Quo but you do realize that heart disease is still the #1 killer, just for different reasons. Today it is from inactivity and high stress. The most ironic thing I remember is the fitness craze coupled with fad diets actually killed a lot of folks in the late 70's and early 80's. Fat is an insulator which also stores ingested toxins away from your internal organs. So the running craze depicted in the Gump movie coupled with rapid weight loss diets dumped those toxins faster than the liver could process and eliminate them. The result was .....heart attack. The dark humor for a bit was fat guys saying dieting, eating right and exercise were more likely to kill you than a Coke and Twinkie.

The truth is that while we all want to maximize life none of us are getting out of it alive! So we need to both enjoy it and be smart, without obsessing over mortality. For the record a few years ago the average life expectancy for American men and women both started to decline again. The hand held device era is partially to blame with both inactivity and inattention while driving. Also our grandparents in the 40's while they had high cholesterol diets physically worked hard and danced. Every generation has its trade offs, but the farmers on both sides of our family all lived into their 90's. The office workers / white collar relatives all dead by their early 80's.

Have a nice day!

Fields wasn't consistent in his decision making while at Georgia. That's why the clearly less physically talented Jake Fromme beat him out.

Heart disease is to a large extent hereditary. They've done studies that say that runners are no less likely to have heart attacks. They are just more likely to survive them.

I'm 56 and have no worries about heart attacks at all.

My Mom died six weeks short of her 100th birthday.

My aunts and uncles all lived to their mid/late nineties.

My Dad died at 85, but he had Black Lung Disease from working in coal mines.

I don't exercise or watch my diet. I am 63 and take no medications or have any aches/pains or illnesses.

Thank God for genetics !!!!

Yeah, and that’s another thing. If you look at old pictures, men in their 20s/30s would bald way quicker and develop grandpa hairlines than they do today.

It's the same for women as well - back in the 70s women in their 40s looked like old maids. Today, there are women turning 50 who look better than many 20 year old girls.

That's a good thing, BTW.
