JMU vs Chowan postgame
Coach By said he doesn’t like where the team is and still doesn’t have a set rotation even though he would like to after 9 games.
I don’t know if the game helped further the cause. It looked like a cruise control game and the Dukes actually got out rebounded By Chowan which should set off the alarms. There have been too many garbage games against teams that don’t put up any resistance and really don’t improve JMU.
How about Mensah getting a dunk on DII Chowan? Maybe he does have a little aggression somewhere in his body. Of course, he offset that by trying to take a charge under the basket against a 6’ guard. Cmon man. You are 6’10”. Put your arms up. Jump or don’t jump your choice, but don’t cross your arms in front of your junk at the rim against a small guard. 01-wingedeagle

As of now the CAA told coach By to be ready for conference games this Coming weekend, but no sign of who the opponent might be.
Perhaps Elon at home? It would be good to start against a weak team if player roles are not yet defined. I can’t wait for games that actually count for something.

PS in your face Chowan! JMU is better than you. 02-13-banana

I agree that I don’t think tune up games are helping us anymore. Not judging this game because I’m glad they could get something last minute but we need to start playing some teams our size and pushing ourselves. The growing pains have to happen somehow.

RE: JMU vs Chowan postgame
Well I think the games are helping. Obviously you'd hope you beat a lower level team than has not played a game this year by 50, but I do see the players starting learn each other. I wish we had played ODU, GMU, and Elon versus Alice, Chowan, and who ever but that was taken out of their hands.

The way Matt started the game I was afraid it was going to be one of those games he dominated the the lessor opponent, but he actually played much more of a team game after the first couple minutes.

I'm not sure where this team will be once league play starts, but I am seeing them start to play together more than a month ago. They have a LONG way to go as should be expected, but I've have seen improvement from this team. They are starting to learn each other.

Keep in mind we starting 3 freshman, 1 soph, and Matt.

Love Amadi, but I'd love to see him work on his mid-range game. Also, not sure why, but I have a feeling he's not done growing.

As far as mask wearing, I think Coach By might be 10th among coaches in the in the league. I hope he never get's it, because he could be a super spreader.

RE: JMU vs Chowan postgame
thanks for starting this - I think you hit on exactly my concern after this game, we should never be outrebounded by a division 2 team.

16 offensive rebounds for chowan to our 12. Yikes. Some of that is related to more of our baskets going in, but it is still concerning. Terrance Edwards seems to be an exceptional rebounder from the guardish position.

Limiting the turnovers is positive, but I'm not sure we were ever really pressured.

RE: JMU vs Chowan postgame
We still take way too many bad shots early in the shot clock which is a great way to have long scoring droughts where the opposition will go on runs. You saw yesterday when we were patient we could get the ball inside and get easy shots. While that is harder against good competition searching for the easier interior shot will lead to better looks on the outside as well. The defense has gotten a bit better, but we need to be better at staying in front of our man so that we don't have to help as much as that has been leading to wide open 3's, the JMU achilles heal for years. Finally, the FT shooting will cost us at least a few games in league this year and it must improve. To me it is about mental toughness as most of these guys have decent strokes. It is about doing the same thing each time you go to the line which is all about in game concentration. I see too many of these guys hit the first shot at the line back off slap hands instead of staying on the line and in the moment.

A couple of other thoughts: Matt Lewis is a better shooter when he dribbles into a shot as opposed to spotting up. Julian Wooden's stroke reminds me of a young Sam Perkins and I think he has a very high upside overall.

from the DNR, we had a game tentatively scheduled with UNC and then the ACC nixed it so that UNC could play Syracuse this week.

Is Chowan still D-II and playing in a mostly HBCU conference? They've come quite a ways. My daughter was offered an academic work-study there when it was NAIA. She didn't take it for reasons that are now irrelevant, but she really enjoyed her visit there.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed attended Chowan. I don't think he was there on a Basketball Scholarship though.

Weird season but so far early in Coach Bs tenure he said he wants to play the best and the original schedule included home game vs Uva, at Georgia Tech and at Florida. I know Florida and Uva were scheduled before Coach B but since Covid he’s played at VCU tried to play at Kentucky and attempted to play at UNC. Seems like Coach B is going to pursue playing a better non conference schedule as JMU head coach which is encouraging.

Yes! And we are scheduled to play Towson now on Saturday so that’s a step in the right direction.

Why would JMU cancel the football season in early August but then move forward with indoor basketball under worsening pandemic conditions?

I’ll take the bait- it’s because you need teams in your division and conference to play in order to have a season. That way the ends justify the means. Probably also more cost effective to test 15+ staff regularly than 75+ football personnel.

Would JMU basketball continue to play if the NCAA announced they were postponing their tournament this season and no other Caa members were playing- no they wouldn’t. Well that’s what happened in Fall with FCS and CAA.

this is actually very true, the logic doesn't follow, but there is no logic to any of this so here we are

Decisions aren’t made in a vacuum- what your conference, and conference members decide and if there are championships to be played for matters.
