Who are the 2 others? Northern Arizona and Central Arkansas are already D1 FCS. They are in the footprint or close. Could either one of them be the ones?

I’m sure a new conference would get a slice. Instead of the G5 money being split 5 ways, it’d be split 6 ways. Each G5 would get about 3.33% less.

The CFP monies can't be doled out to a conference which doesn't have football (yet). And I doubt the next contract will be amended midway through to let the WAC get a piece of the pie. Unless they get to FBS status by the time the new contract kicks in, they're likely getting the shaft.

So for four or five years no CFP money then they get it.
If Ohio and Michigan can have the MAC Texas and Utah can have the WAC.

Actually, I think the WA" exists in a no man land right now. Because the contract is an agreement between FBS contracts, the WAC may hold a spot that can't be denied because they have FBS status.

My guess later this decade is generic. They mean to be at the table in 2024 when the talks heat up about the new CFP and use the WAC's special status to wedge in.

I dont really see the WAC how the WAC can still hold "FBS status" given that they dont sponsor football, but for the sake of argument wouldnt creating an FCS WAC mean they give up any sort of claim to FBS?

I know they have talked to the ASUN. But the ASUN does not sponsor football and the WAC will. They would have to find a home for their football.

Assuming both can maintain at least 6 FB members, they could accomplish the same thing via a scheduling alliance while still retaining separate FCS playoff autobids.

As far as I know right now, all will be in the Big South. But the ASUN wants football.

North Florida will eventually start football, but when is another story.

I know they said the ASUN will possibly pick up some football only members as well, time will tell.

Dont think the Southland will be willing to team up with the ASUN for football, I imagine they will add a couple of D2 schools to shore things up.

Good point—now does someone like UT-Chattanooga look at a 1 in 6 shot at an autobid vs a 1 in 9 chance and jump on?

Because it's a contract between FBS conferences/teams and when it was signed the WAC was FBS. The current contract is a simple extension.

I'm surprised anyone who reads this board is unaware of the WAC FBS loophole, it is usually the basis of any western realignment speculation. There is a time limit to its viability though, which is the new contract that will probably include at least some form of expansion and a reworking of financials. The WAC FBS pipe dream has to be viable before that happens, which is what this movement is all about. That's a lot of the honey pulling this all in, whether or not they can successfully pull it off is another question as there are rules about what you have to do to be FBS.

For NMST and the WAC that's really irrelevant though, the possibility is the lever the league has used to position itself with stability. If it works great, NMST gets a bonus of a slightly better basketball Olympic sports league and a home to build football from. If it doesn't work NMST still.has a slightly better Olympics home, one that is likely to be geographically centered around them and include the two most populous states. Hell even if only one or two of the FCS schools get up, it makes scheduling much easier with three or four independent teams in the west. Throwing together a schedule with those teams, a game with one or two of the independents back east who also need games and their regular rivalry games with UTEP and New Mexico as the base isn't much harder than setting one up in a conference. If they make the remaining FCS teams their regular home FCS game the way Navy does for the patriot league it's all around a nice positive for everyone.

When you look at it probably at worst it's a lateral move for everyone. If it just turns out mildly successful it's a small positive move, even if it just fills its basketball potential it's probably an occasional multi bid conference and usually a solid seed for its auto bid, so that's a pretty good upgrade. If they can make FBS a reality though well that a homerun and a huge change in a lot of ways for everyone even the ones who don't make it to FBS or play football.

The WAC had no football in 2014 when the CFP started.

But as you said I do remember there being some kind of deadline for the WAC rejoining FBS. I want to say it was like 7 years or something but I cant find an article or interview about it.

While the WAC was FBS in 2012, they were not included in the first CFP contract, as it had dropped football by the time the CFP actually started in 2014/2015. The WAC needs 8 full members, like everybody else. Otherwise, no piece of the pie. Loophole or not. They won't be able to negotiate for a piece of the pie if they don't fulfill the requirements.

That is not accurate. The CFP is a different contract than the old BCS contract.

I deleted the rest because it was built on that misunderstanding.

The reason that the WAC may be able to give out FBS invites is that the NCAA Division I manual says:

Quote:20.4.2.1.1 Eligibility for Reclassification. Before a Football Championship Subdivision institution may apply for reclassification to the Football Bowl Subdivision, the institution must receive a bona fide invitation for membership
from a Football Bowl Subdivision conference or a conference that previously met the definition of a Football Bowl Subdivision conference (see Bylaw 20.02.6). (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

RE: WAC Plans To Announce FCS League
Even though Big West, Southland, Southern and MVC's ADs and commishes said they don't fit in the WAC situation, but other experts said with their history as a D1 conference and FBS or 1A from 1978 to 1982 or with the Big West until the 1990s? They can find a loophole just like the WAC to get back to FBS status as well. There are schools in those conferences that are FBS ready stadiums while schools not in those conferences do have FBS size stadiums like SWAC, MEAC, OVC, CAA, MVFC and Big Sky.

But with this pandemic issue? It showed a lot of holes, and lack of schools to replace teams because of the virus. If the WAC have teams in FBS by 2026 to 2030? The schools may not be able to play in Bowl games right away, but with another Pandemic? Waivers could be waived for any bowl games to fill in just in case.

We may do look at schools on the west coast to upgrade their stadiums, add football and all that to go FBS as well. ESPN would love to show night games. Eastern Washington is one that they would love to have at FBS.

Ok I'll bite. What is keeping ESPN from showing Eastern Washington games now?

They are not FBS, but when they showed FCS playoff games, they did pulled in some viewers better than some schools in the G5.
