Bottom line is right now we are so broke we opted out of playing an entire season of football and all of our programs that anyone gives a hoot about are likely in the bottom half of one of the worst conferences in the country.

So we opted out due to financial concerns and not safety concerns?

Pretty sure that is the case. We are playing basketball right now, and the COVID landscape is worse than it was when they decided to cancel football.

We couldn't even practice with a full team (less than half) in football when the season started. That isn't a problem in basketball. Its much easier to keep 20 people safe than 125.

I have no doubt that financial concerns and safety concerns were both factors whether they will admit it or not. I think the argument is which was the bigger factor. Because the decision was made before the conference made a decision and laid out their safety plan, I think that financial concerns were the driver. With basketball, I don’t know when the decision was made to play but they certainly didn’t opt out before the conference laid out their plan.

Is it possible setting Ricky Rhane for success played a role in the decision? Perhaps they knew we would suck in football this season, and now that RR has some better recruits and transfers he has a chance to win a few his first season? Whereas in basketball we were expected to be a great team and make some noise (oops) so we pulled out all the stops to make it happen.

I have not doubt both were considered. Just pointing out the fallacy is assuming that safety was of no concern.

It's certainly possible. There are some on here who believe that not playing actually puts us at an advantage due to giving Rhane more time to practice with the team and make preparations that a normal spring season would have provided. I'm undecided on that but I'd sure like to believe it's true. I don't have the optimistic view that we will have a winning record next season but I predict we will have more than 1 win so it should be an improvement.

Safety was a concern in the public relations and less so in reality. Unlike a lot of the schools acting in abundance of caution because of safety concerns that never opened or shut down quickly after opening, ODU opened its dorms and campus to in-person instruction and stayed open. They didn't risk losing more people to gap years that weren't going to pay tuition for online only because they were concerned with their safety. It was a PR stunt to cover up financial woes.

I hope Selig and Bourne are on the phone with each other trying to figure out a home for both ODU and JMU sports. The CAA sucks.

Ditto. As long as it has high quality basketball, games on tv and some regional interest, Im happy. I wouldnt mind sticking with Marshall too. They've shown they can put together a decent basketball team if they want to. Add Liberty (I know, I know) and you've got a pretty decent 4 to start with.

Or, perhaps the rumors are true and WM, SB & Albany leave the CAA. Boot out Elon, Hofstra and NE and make Towson and UD move up to FBS.

FBS football: ODU, JMU, LU, Towson, Delaware, Marshall, Charlotte, WKU
Basketball, ODU, JMU, Liberty, Towson, Delaware, Marshall, Charlotte, Charleston, Drexel, UNCW, WKU

Maybe we can bring along App St and MTSU too.

That is one of the most palatable proposals I have actually seen on this board.

Same, but don't see Towson coming along. Throw Charleston and UNCW a bone and swap in Coastal.

EXACTLY and it some level it was a distraction for the Admin. They would have lost way more money they didn't have.

It was the right move and still can be if they reduce footprint and add jmu or liberty and app st coastal ga state ga southern. reduce footprint by taking cusa east minus florida schools. maybe add uab and take both jmu and liberty. makes more sense than what they are thinking

JMU is FCS, Georgia Southern is 10 hours away at least and sucks at basketball , App State is a haul as well and sucks at basketball, and Coastal also sucks at basketball. Liberty and JMU are the only ones of those schools I have any interest in. I guess I App and Coastal would be ok as outliers. It is one thing if to be rich enough to charter flights to places like Clemson, Georgia Tech, BC and Syracuse every week but who wants to spend half the week on a bus traveling those distances? Unfortunately the move to FBS made a fitting conference almost impossible. Only way to do it is split off football for its own arrangement.

Dude with all due respect you need to check your geography, GA Southern is about 8 hours away and App State in Boone, NC is about six hours. Each would be doable drives for football.

If the goal is to keep Sun Belt and CUSA schools from hemorraghing money, primarily due to travel, we will need schools like this. So their basketball sucks we would be trading one, one bid league for another. Given the chance to establish some regional rivalries would be a good thing as it would cut athletic costs and allow the program to put saved travel dollars back into facilities, player development recruiting etc.

Personally, I don't see JMU moving up due to the increase in football costs, plus it would take away their secret weapon...immediate eligibility for FBS players dropping down to play. I would love for it to happen, but don't see it. Liberty makes sense due to proximity and athletic programs (I don't care about their politics as long as they put butts in seats when they come to Norfolk).

So if I was the supreme commissioner we would be in conference with a - APP State, Charlotte, Coastal, GA State, Liberty, JMU, East Carolina, NAVY, Temple, UCF and FAU.

Philly/Annapolis is the northern boundary, with FAU as the southern boundary. Atlanta is pretty much as far west as we go. Longest trip would be to FAU (who doesn't want to go to Boca in the winter). We save on travel costs across the board and develop/re-establish some good rivalries where fans can travel.

You were advocating going to the Big South to join Longwood and Campbell. You can't be complaining about GaSo, App and JMU sucking at MBB.

Yes I’d make the trade off with sucky basketball for relative proximity.

You were advocating going to the Big South to join Longwood and Campbell. You can't be complaining about GaSo, App and JMU sucking at MBB.

Yes I’d make the trade off with sucky basketball for relative proximity, especially if that means football is split off from other sports giving our basketball program many more options to move up to a better situation later. As long as they are together there is no chance of improvement.

Uh, I thought we were picked pre-season for 5th place. Since when is that great?

The overall narrative in this bubble was that we were going to be good. I might be wrong, but not sure anyone else trying to look at it objectively came to that conclusion. I think it was a lot of “next year” to excuse last year repetitive enough that we began to believe it.
