Hasn't Ehlinger played 5 years of his 4-years of eligibility already? He must be at least 23 years old by now.

I think you have to span 6 years to qualify for that level.

BOB’s first move at AL, trade Saban to Rice for Bloomgren.

OK. Maybe 2nd move. He has to get himself appointed AL GM first.

You'd have to think Saban would want to be at the school that was undefeated in the series! 05-stirthepot 04-rock Nice one, Tomb.

Rich Rodriguez is back at ULM as the Warhawks’ new offensive coordinator. He was out of the game in 2020. In 2019 he was offensive coordinator at Ole Missed.

And Boise has a new Head Coach:

Coming home: Boise State hires Andy Avalos as head coach

Quote:The hiring of Avalos continues Boise State’s trend of keeping the job running the program within the Broncos family. Boise State has hired either an assistant within the program or a former player to run the show dating back to Dirk Koetter taking over in 1998.

I hope those guys can do something great at ULM. I see that Terry Bowden is the new head coach. He must have been fired from Akron last year.

I wonder where Mensa will end up.

I just sorta wonder if maybe Saban won't bring him in to replace Sark. The Saban coaching rehabilitation program has been going on for a while, and I could see a fit. He is an OC who beat Sanban in the playoffs, and there aren't many of those. If nothing else, I would guess that Saban would like to have his Texas recruiting connections.

BoB is heading to Bama already as their new OC.

Wondering if BoB will try and negotiate some “blockbuster” transfer portal trades... Fricken idiot...

Missed that.

BoB and Saban do have the Belichick connection, so that makes some sense, although I don't see BoB's scheme fitting as well with where Bama is now as Sark's did.

He doesn't really need a scheme so much as he needs to teach the running backs how to hurdle defenders in the prone position. Saban is clearly a superb recruiter and coach but the scheme is in the lack of a college salary cap.

I think the scheme has a bit more sophistication than that, but you are correct in that the heart of this program in recruiting. And they've almost gotten to the point that they don't recruit, they select. There just aren't many kids in the southeastern portion of the USA who would not at the very minimum give Alabama very serious consideration if they came calling. Their recruiting is kind of, "Which 5-stars do we want?"

When visiting my mom several years ago, I took my G/F on a tour of the facilities. She was like, "Wow! This is incredible! This is like an NFL team!" And we didn't even have time to do the Bryant museum.

I can remember when Denny Stadium seated 28,000 and the NE light stanchion came out of the top of the Kappa house. We used to park at Tuscaloosa HS and walk through a graveyard to get there. A little spooky after night games. Rice was definitely a step up in facilities from that, but things have reversed mightily in the last 50 years.

They did some cool stuff scheme wise - but again everything tends to work when your QB gets so little pressure that the one fumble he had in the championship game was more out of the shock of a defender being close to him than the impact.

Speaking of resources - I'm too lazy to do the work and you're the resident historian but after the Herman firing I'd wager that UT has spent more money paying coaches to go away in the last 10 years or so than we have paid our coaches since the inception of the program?

Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Rice is a private university, so the data for the Rice side would be well nigh impossible to obtain, but your bet is not a bad one.

He recruited both Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders to Penn State, turned Miss State RBs into bulldozers and then helped Najee Harris to to what most likely will be a 1st round pick.

Brian Smith was officially named Rice's new defensive coordinator on December 12, 2018 after spending the previous two years as the defensive backs coach at Michigan. He also coaches the Owls' safeties.

In his two seasons at Michigan, Smith's defensive backs were the part of an overall defensive unit that ranked among the nation's best each year.
Entering the bowl season after the 2017 season, Michigan ranked third in the country in total defense (288.8 yards per game) despite losing 10 starters from the 2016 team that ranked fist and saw seven of the 10 starters selected in the NFL Draft.

The Wolverines led the nation in pass defense, surrendering just 142.7 yards per game through the air. Both of the safeties Smith worked with in 2017 (Tyree Kinnel and Josh Metellus) were named All-Big Ten honorable mention by both the coaches and media.

In his first year working with the U-M safeties, Smith coached Delano Hill and Dymonte Thomas to career-best seasons which culminated in All-Big Ten honors for both players. Thomas had a career-best 70 stops, with 10 pass breakups, one fumble recovery and his first career interception, while Hill contributed a career-best 52 tackles, including 4.5 for loss, adding six pass breakups and three interceptions.

As a whole, the secondary was part of an elite defensive unit which led or ranked second in the NCAA in seven defensive categories, including pass defense, pass efficiency defense, first and third down conversions allowed and scoring defense. Nearly 45 percent (44.5; 5.62 per game) of opponents' possessions ended in a three-and-outs, and U-M allowed just 28 red zone trips all season, fewest in the nation. Michigan's defensive backs defended 68 passes, with 13 interceptions and three pick-sixes, including one from Hill and the unit allowed only 11 passing touchdowns all season. The defense led the Big Ten in eight categories, including total scoring defense, pass defense, pass defense efficiency, third down conversions allowed and red zone defense, permitting a 43.6 completion percentage on average for opposing quarterbacks.

He'd be on my list if I was Michigan, and I'd listen to offers if I was Smith.

Looks like Michigan hired co-defensive coordinators: Mike Macdonald, the Baltimore Ravens' LBs coach, and Maurice Linguist, the Dallas Cowboys' DBs coach

In case you missed it:

Why did Josh Heupel want to become the Tennessee football coach? To 'chase championships'

Quote:Danny White changed jobs. He kept his football coach.

Tennessee on Wednesday announced Josh Heupel as its new coach. Heupel, 42, was 28-8 the past three seasons at Central Florida, which was his first head coaching opportunity.

White had been UCF’s athletics director from 2015 until taking the job at Tennessee last week. He previously hired Heupel to replace Scott Frost at UCF in December 2017.

“I just kind of realized that the best option was the guy that I’ve been working with for the last three years,” White said of Heupel's hiring.

Heupel promises to bring an exciting brand of offense to Tennessee. UCF ranked in the top eight nationally in scoring offense in each of his three seasons.

we could use some of that on S. Main.

Quote: “We’re going to play with tempo here,” Heupel said. “We’re going to be the aggressor.”
...but can they play with "intellectual brutality"?

Quote:“I don’t know how we could deliver offense more than we just did (with this hire)," White said. "We’re going to move the ball and score some points.”
...again.

Quote:"The reason that I’m standing here today is because I believe in a very, very, very bright future for Tennessee football,” Heupel said. “I believe that there’s a minor speed bump that we’re going through, but the kids that are in our program right now and the kids that are being recruited are all going to have an opportunity to go play and chase championships.”

yeah, we can't really do that here, can we? (not that we've really tried all that much)

Quote:Heupel received a six-year deal worth $4 million annually. His buyout for leaving UCF is about $3.5 million.
if you want to play, you gots to pay...we don't really do that here, do we?

Quote:Heupel's first season at UCF was his best. He went 12-1 after replacing Frost, following Frost's 13-0 campaign. Frost departed for Nebraska.

UCF's lone loss during Heupel's inaugural season was a 40-32 defeat to LSU in the Fiesta Bowl. The Knights finished 10-3 in 2019 and went 6-4 this season.

...hey! WE lost to LSU also! We're exactly the same-- 'cept different.

Quote:While UCF's offense remained prolific under Heupel, it plummeted on defense in 2020, ranking 123rd nationally in total defense and 92nd in scoring defense.
...Hey! our defense is near the bottom of the list, too! Again, we're just the same!

Quote:“I’m excited about what we’re embarking on," he said.
..hmmm, sounds quite different from "I need a steady paycheck from my ol' college bud-row, as long as I don't rock the boat I can stay a long while (unless I win the school's first ever nat'l championship--then I'll be kicked to the curb by that very same fellow!)
