RE: State of Athletics Under Wood
I really like Benson a lot as a person, but I worry he's too close with Selig and Dick Sander (Selig's buddy who he hired as a consultant to axe wrestling). My FOIA docs revealed the three on numerous email chains with each other about an AD-centered podcast that either hasn't seen the light of day or isn't listed in any of the major directories.

If he's that close to Wood and Sander (again, former VCU ad), hard pass.

Heard about your resolution 04-rock. Who is getting a new wrestling program in HR!?! Hampton, Regent?

My vote is Bruce Stewart or someone from outside the program. We need a culture change. I think Bruce could bring that, but I don't trust anyone else currently involved in ODU Athletics or ODAF to make that happen.

I want Jones and Selig gone. They’ve done NOTHING to warrant keeping their jobs.

Open your wallet and tell Broderick (or the incoming president) that you’ll pay for their buyouts...... I am sure you’re so great at your job that you have the means

BUYOUTS! STILL WAITING FOR THE JJ, AD AND PRESIDENT TO TAKE CUTS. I HAVE SEEN NO PR. WE ARE IN SPRING SEMISTER. PRESIDENT BRODERICK MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE, LEAVING A SINKING SHIP.

We should just accept mediocrity according to some posters on here. "Forget the good ole days. They will never return. Jeff Jones is as good as it gets unless we get major donors to pony up."

I’d love to see us have some swagger and higher aspirations. To act like we belong. Blaine was that way. I remember when the VCU AD stated his goal was to never have VCU referred to as a mid major again. I Love that. Meanwhile, it seems we just make excuses why that’s all we will ever be. Woe is us. All we deserve is Jeff Jones and a CIT bid every 5 years.

That’s pretty easy to say after you reach a final four.

ODU beat VCU by 11 at the Stu and by 5 in the Coliseum. VCU beat ODU by 9 at the Ted earlier in the season in January. Probably one of the signature wins that got VCU in the First Four that year.

Losing to ODU in the CAA tournament was a definite gut punch, but no sweep that year for ODU.

The last time ODU swept a season series against VCU was the 1998-1999 season and y’all kicked our asses in the CAA tournament to go 3-0 that year. Hasn’t happened since then. Doesn’t look like we’ll be in a conference again for the foreseeable future, but it is cool to look back and see all the history there between the 2 programs.

No. But Id rather do that than make the CBI or CIT, and we hang banners for that "accomplishment".

Agree. And I’m all for setting lofty goals, but they should be something more attainable than never being referred to as a mid major. Even Gonzaga is sometimes referenced as a mid major. Sweet Sixteens sounds like an appropriate goal. Attain that and then we can think bigger.

Ever since 1988 when Richmond made the Sweet 16 I have considered that as a realistic goal for us. Once. I am not getting any younger and that goal has never seemed as any more impossible than it is today. But hope springs eternal.

Hate to say it, but either of those tournaments is a longshot this year.

Agreed. Which is why I’m finally fully on the fire Jeff bandwagon. This is the year it should all come together. We’ve got a lot of upperclassmen. It’s been wait till next year for a while. And “next year” has now arrived. NCAA or NIT or bust. Because if it’s not with this team, we won’t see another opportunity for another couple seasons. And 1 ncaa in 9-10 years is piss poor.

FWIW, athletes were granted an extra year. I don't think we will be bad off next year either way, but if CUrry comes back, I think the team will be stronger (with or without Jones). Especially if Wade is able to return to 75% of his former self.

This team will not be good enough to compete for a conference title with this group of players and JJ as their coach no matter how long they get to stay around.

Why do you think we will be any better next year if we retain Jones? All schools return all their players. I agree the addition of Wade will help, but the problems with this squad go far beyond not having Jason. I just see next season as a repeat of this one. Especially considering most other team's players see, to improve at a faster rate than Jeff's do. We may be better, but so will everyone else. Our record may be worse. I would love seeing how another coach would do with these players since I think we do have some talent. Curry, Ezikpe, Reece, Trice, Oliver, Hunter and Wade is (or should be) a formidable top 7 players.

Because I don't think other teams have players develop faster than us and I don't agree about your opinion of Jones.

Im not arguing whether we should keep him or get rid of him, but why is Jones' record so good compared to the other CUSA coaches if they are so much better? Why have we consistently (not every year) been at the top of the conference if other coaches are so much better?

Fair enough. Id argue our record is good against CUSA, because most of CUSA sucks in basketball. If a team doesnt finish in the top 3 in this league, they probably aren't very good. (we're at 6th place last I looked) And even if they are good enough to finish in the #2 or #3 spot, they apparently aren't good enough to get an NCAA or NIT invite. Play a top 100 schedule and get 22-23 wins. Then we'll be talking. We have very few signature wins over the last 6 or 7 seasons (there are a couple). And beating the little sisters of the poor doesnt cut it. When it comes to basketball, I expect ODU to have some national relevance. (Football is a different story. We still have to pay our dues there. Id be happy with an east division CUSA title for now)
