Coach after coach.

Players after players.

Home stadiums after home stadiums.

STILL just the absolute worst. It never changes.

Exactly!

John Wooden would be spinning in his grave. Fortunately, he’s smart enough not to watch modern college basketball. Does anyone teach fundamentals anymore? I think AAU basketball has killed the game. No structure, no spacing, no movement without the ball, no looking to dish when you drive the lane, nothing. Hard for old guys like me to watch. If I was coaching I’d run films of Wisconsin everyday. These kids need to see what fundamental basketball looks like.

Did I hear incorrectly earlier in the year? I thought Fredericks was injured.
Mettlen needs to dig in a little and find some answers. To leave the team after 7 games is very strange.

I thought about halfway through the first half that we were doing a good job of working the ball inside and had no reason to force anything . I felt it was just lazy and undisciplined to take a contested 3. We were getting good looks when we tried .

I could not watch or listen.

Did we not just hire a coach? I thought coaches at mid majors have to continue teaching fundamental basketball to make up for the recruiting height & quickness gaps.

Set picks, block out, back door cuts...8th grade teams practice these basics.

He didn’t comment if Morse was reinjured but something was amiss as he played In the first half But not in the the 2nd.

He also said he would shorten the rotation Going forward to find those that will play with toughness.
For those that watched, there is more to it than that. He has to put people in position to be physical. Right now, everyone has a green light to take 3’s and nobody besides Amadi stays in the paint. So I would say part of the toughness problem is he is letting big bodies roam the perimeter on offense. Wooden and Christmas could be so much better if they defaulted to the paint and occasionally flashed to the outside. Instead they live out there.

This game should have been won. It was just as much his fault as the team getting Physically out scrapped.
This ties in to my previous post about Jacob's and mensah not playing. I'll trust coach's judgement on whether Mensah may be soft, but Jacob's is not. Grit and rim protection are what he brings.

This is not supposed to be a knock against amadi or wooden. I'm talking about using him in addition to not instead of them.

To follow up the 2nd half VCU effort with that turd tonight is extremely worrisome. I had hoped that they found something in terms of effort, flow, and toughness....but nope.

Like I said early in the VCU thread, I see a lot of the same problems as previous years. Byington will have time to figure this out, but I'm concerned about the lack of toughness and undisciplined play. Coaches can turn that around in year 1 regardless of talent.

Hey, they only shot 19 threes a game coming into tonight. Then they shot almost double that number against JMU. Must be something about the Dukes that causes everyone to start jacking up long range shots.

RE: MBB 1/3/21 Game #7: Morgan State v JMU @6p
We are transitioning from one of the worst coaches we've ever had in JMU history. This isn't going to get fixed overnight, and that would be under normal circumstances.
Add on to that Covid, limited practices, reduced time in off season, transfers, schedule issues, etc and there is no wonder we are struggling.
I don't blame Byington. He is doing the best that he can. He isn't making any excuses for this team.
If they have a normal off season this year and this team isn't playing any better, then I would say there's room for concern. But to make a judgement based on what has happened in less than a year (and a messed up year at that) is incredibly unfair.

like leaving them wide open or playing defense with your hands below chest level?
