lol---if ever there was a season who's success or failure was totally and completely up to the eye of the beholder---Herman's 2020 season at Texas would be it. I have to admit---I was shocked by how this hire turned out. I really thought Herman would absolutely kill it at Texas.

If Texas played their full original schedule they’d probably be 10-3 (if we include their bowl win) even with those close losses. The games against Rice, LSU, and Kansas were canceled, but you’d have to think Texas would be the favorites in each game.

I'm legitimately curious as to why you think that.

Sark was just so-so at USC and he screwed up the Falcons offense after Kyle Shannahan left for the 49ers.

I get Alabama has been really good on offense, but they have the best skill position players I've seen on a team and Nick Saban has had productive offenses through many OCs.

I view Sark as another John Mackovic. With Hermann we were at least going in the right direction. This team played hard every game. Made mistakes, but never gave up. And the talent was better. Under Charlie Strong, Texas talent was only equal to our opponents and less than OU and less in skill positions than Baylor and Oklahoma St. And the team often gave up.

Sarkasian is a definite downgrade. This is how programs go in the gutter. Changing just to change. Somebody needs to be fired. Maybe its Chris Del Conte.

They fired Akers to get the totally incompetent David McWilliams.
They fired Mackovic for an upgrade with Mack.
They fired Mack for the worst coach in Texas history-Charlie Strong.
Now they fire Hermann for someone with a 46-35 record at Washington and USC. Just crazy.

Sounds like money people put the pressure on CDC and he caved.

I think the entire "The Eyes of Texas" saga with players not singing it along with Herman's lack of insistence for the players to do so played a larger role than we know.

Herman was to mend a number of fences, especially among Texas high school ranks & the power structure among big exes & their political influence, expecting his brief stay in Houston would have prepared him for a broader PR role. Nine of that really occurred and now someone less in touch with "Texas HS football" is tasked to repair it.

Just read about Hermann's role in that yesterday. Apparently the AD said all players in all sports stand. Hermann apparently let his team decide. The coaches and Sam Ehrlinger stood after the OU game. The rest left the field. It was a bad image of the rest of the team leaving Sam to stand alone. That definitely turned some fans off from the team. There was a compromise on all those issues (and some win/wins) and then the players decided to do their own thing with Hermann's blessing.

A bunch of us were ready to give up on UT sports if they went so far as to get rid of the Eyes of Texas simply because it was first performed at a minstrel show over a hundred years ago and the then president liked to use a line he learned at Washington & Lee University spoken by General Lee who was president of W&L (The Eyes of the South <Texas> are upon you). It was all driven by a radical professor at UT. Some of the things the players wanted made sense. Some were kind of silly to make a big deal about but unimportant. Some were ignorant because UT was already doing those things. But some were really crossing a line. Getting rid of the Eyes and dedicating athletics money to BLM causes were crossing lines.

So I can imagine the AD and some big money donors were really ticked off at Hermann about undermining a difficult compromise.

Yup---coupled with the ability of the Herman ego to rub people the wrong way---Herman simply didnt have the good will of enough big money donors to survive unless he was winning and winning big. I think he was on the right path---but at Texas---you have to be able to handle all those BMD's juuuuuuust right.

Head coach at a G5. Then maybe work his way back to a P5.
He is not a TV personality. He has this creepy non-blinking stare in his press conferences. Looks like someone about to go postal.04-cheers

He should try and get the OC or offensive analyst position for Saban at Alabama. He's done wonders for fired head coaches and getting them another opportunity (Locksley, Jones, Kiffin, Sarkisian, etc.).

With a pocket full of cash, why should he worry about working?

I think you're right. I get firing Herman. He had gone as far as he could at UT. He burned too many bridges with the Big Money Donors.

I'm not sure about hiring Sark. The jury is out.

Some coaches with lots of money still have the drive to be the head man and show that they can succeed. Ego, ambition, etc. Not saying he will want to coach again but good chance he does.

Mack Brown moved from ESPN analyst to North Carolina coach when his Texas buyout period was up. Of course, he wanted to prove he could still coach.

RE: Texas Shocker
As a TCU fan, I hate this hire. This is the first time that Texas has a head coach close to on par as Patterson since TCU has been in the Big 12 (Mack was there the first 2 years, but he was already being pushed out).

Those talking about his Washington record are forgetting he took over a 10th place team (in a 10 team Pac-10) from Tyrone Willingham. He did win 7 games 3 times, but did take the team to 4 straight bowl games. Also, he laid the foundation for the playoff team a couple years later. I’m not saying he was the reason, but he is the one who started turning the program around.

He didn’t have enough time at USC to really draw a conclusion on how he would have fared there.

But, he has taken the offense to the next level at Alabama. Yes, it’s Alabama, but they have been on a different level.

What worries me the most as an opposing fan is that Texas will now have quality QBs that will beat you. They’ve gotten quality, but hasn’t really turned out on the field.

The other thing that Sark brings with him is that he doesn’t have to be “tied” to certain assistants. That’s the biggest problems I think of coaches who don’t turn out, they feel the need to be loyal to assistants and bring them with. Sark doesn’t have that issue. Yes, he will bring some guys from Alabama, but he has the ability to build a staff with little bias.

Just my $0.02.

I wouldn't worry too much. Texas gave Herman the boot after four seasons. I would be surprised if the new coach has any higher level of success in four years. Now, drop a coach like Urban Meyer in Texas and then you'd have something to worry about.

What, after failures at USC and Atlanta, gives you the confidence to believe that Sarkisian has turned the coaching corner?

Ultimately his alcohol issues sunk him at USC. No one really performs their best when dealing with that.

His Atlanta teams got a bad rap, but the offense was actually fine. The reasons those teams lost games was because the defense was bad.

Since he has been at Bama, he's done a fine job. He has helped us land some of the best recruits we've ever had whether you're talking about Tua or Bryce Young. Technically, he's had 2 stints with us in recent years although the first was mainly as an analyst. He left to go to the Falcons.

I wish we weren't losing him. I've seen a ton of OCs come through during Saban's tenure. He and Kiffin were the best which is not surprising given their performance at USC back in the early 2000s. To be honest, I wouldn't have minded if he had stuck around until Saban retired and subsequently took over.

If I were him then I wouldn't have gone to Texas because it's a place that traditionally underachieves and yet expects more. Nonetheless, it's a fantastic opportunity and he'll make a ton of money. I wish him the best.
