SEC Dynasty: SEC playing for national title for 16th time in past 15 years
You might have made a double-take at the header, as it seems mathematically impossible. But it's not - next week will be the 16th time in the past 15 seasons that an SEC team is in the title game. That's because in two years, 2011 and 2017, two SEC teams were in the title game.

The only season in the past 15 in which an SEC team hasn't played for the title was 2014, when Ohio State faced Oregon.

By comparison, during these past 15 years, the other conferences have played for the title these many times:

ACC ..................... 5

B1G ..................... 4

Big 12 .................. 2

PAC ...................... 2

Independent .......... 1

It's been pretty remarkable.

I think Alabama has played in the National Championship more often than the SEC Championship... if we’re talking about the SEC being loaded.

If you go back to the first arranged national championship games the SEC has appeared in 22 of 27 years. Giving Nebraska, Miami, and VT to their current conferences and the ACC remains second with 17, the B10 at 13, the B12 at 10 and the P12 at 6.

Individually

11 - Bama
7 - Ohio State and Oklahoma
6 - Clemson
4 - FSU
3 - Texas, LSU. USC, and ND
2 - Florida, Auburn, Oregon, Nebraska, and Miami
1 - Michigan State, Tennessee, Washington, and Georgia

I think what it really shows is that there are only a handful of competitive programs. Ohio State totally dominates the Big 10. Oklahoma almost totally dominates the B12. Clemson or FSU dominate the ACC but rarely at the same time. Bama almost totally dominates the SEC but the conference is strong enough to field a successful challenger about every other year.

The playoff system rewards the winners to the point that they have aggregated so much talent that year in an year out only 3-5 programs have a realistic chance to accomplish anything. I think this is hurting interest in the sport.

Gators have 4. 2 each under Spurrier and Meyer.

I think the 4 team playoff limits it.

Note that all but Michigan St. among your group of 18 are the teams that have dominated over the last 35 years. Those 17 + Colorado and Michigan have won every AP national championship. Throw in Oregon and you have 97 of the 105 AP top 3 finishers in that time.

I’ll be rooting for Alabama. If The ACC can’t win it, I want The SEC to.
It just means more.

Yes, I think one thing most SEC and ACC fans can agree on is ... we don't like the B1G, LOL.

I don't blame them, but I don't pull for mercenaries, whether their names are LeBron James, Baker Mayfield, Justin Fields or Trey Sermon.

I'll be rooting for Alabama.

Actually I just don't like Fields because he made up lies about Georgia to get immediate eligibility (He was "scared of racists," but his sister stayed at Georgia). And then he came back this summer and convinced the Wake Forest transfer QB who was supposed to start for UGA to opt out. I always pulled for Jacob Eason at Washington who only had good things to say about UGA and the Texas QBS who have played at SMU (Gilbert, Buechele) who have similarly been gracious.

Don't really have any problem with players switching after getting beat out. Sermon was playing at Oklahoma. Mayfield was the Texas Tech starter. And yeah, that Wake Forest guy was their starter.

I use a formula in a spreadsheet and it's showing me that Alabama (SEC) will win another title this year. I have Alabama as a 13 point favorite against Ohio State.

With that said, I had Clemson at -6, so maybe my formula sucks?

Fair points! IMO the CFP has hurt the game much more than help. Way too much focus on the Playoff, on behalf of ESPN, that we can't even enjoy the regular season. You have teams like Northwestern, Kansas State, Houston, Georgia Tech, Louisiana, Ole Miss, Stanford and so on being called out for having loses or a weak schedule non-stop, rather than just enjoying football.

I turn on a game like Texas-Oklahoma for example, to enjoy a rivalry game and all I get is graphs, rankings and talking heads telling me why these two teams do/don't matter. The way everyone sets up the drama for a lousy 4 team playoff is just ridiculous!

ESPN is selling it like the NBA. All Celtics and Lakers or personalities, Lebron James or Seth Curry. That is not what college football is about.

And a 5-1-2 playoff means the regular season, well it just matters more.

Well what is significant is that it isn't all Alabama.

Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida and Tennessee have all won titles since the beginning of the BCS era. Georgia has played for one.

In the Big 10 its only been Ohio St. In the Pac, its been only USC, with Oregon playing for a couple. In the Big 12 its been Texas and Oklahoma with Nebraska playing for one they had no business in. The ACC has been just FSU and Clemson.

Miami won and Virginia Tech played for one while in the Big East. That's it other than Notre Dame losing.

I do not agree. With 5/1/2, or any system that has conference champ auto-bids, the OOC games become far less important, irrelevant save for filling the two paltry at-large spots. You can lose them all and still make the playoffs, as long as you win your little conference-bubble. And when filling national playoffs, the irony is that OOC games should matter most.

That's a pretty weird thing to say, since in just about every sport with playoffs I can think of the "OOC" games count very much. E.g., in the NFL, if the Cowboys are 5-3 in the division but 10-6 overall while the Eagles are 6-2 in the division but 9-7 overall, the Cowboys win the division not the Eagles. But in college conferences, no.

RE: SEC Dynasty: SEC playing for national title for 16th time in past 15 years
Individual schools is more meaningful than conferences.

Alabama has rendered conference play largely a joke, just as Ohio State and Clemson have, and for awhile Oklahoma did (Oregon never quite had that, but close). It was simply can they get through unscathed, or no more than one loss, as their slot was pretty much waiting.

That IMO is the big story, the real picture.

A playoff of four schools create an environment where each conference needs a single dominant program. There really is not room for two. This is consolidating more one more. Top talent more and more concentrates on those "sure" final four teams. If you want the talent to spread out and the CCGs to matter more, then increase the size of the playoff field. This means more schools offer an opportunity to be in the playoffs. We see this in Basketball where the top 6 conferences average 39 schools in the Tourney (there are only 76 of these schools), and talent is spread quite a bit more, and the winners a much larger set of schools.

Football would not be as big a number, but going to 8 would likely see 2 SEC pretty much every year and a 2nd from the ACC or B1G most years, sometimes from another conference. Also you'll see more balanced conference play and improved value of the CCGs.

But if it stays at four teams, then get used to a lot more of the same handful of schools, the same dominance in conference.
