Conference USA hit rock bottom in 2020 (Article)
Pretty brutal article on how the CUSA went wrong. I would of posted it on the CUSA board but they would probably delete it.

Well, let's all hope we don't catch an article like that in the next few years

They make a comparison to the SBC teams on wins and y’all come out on top for sure. I don’t think the SBC has the issues they have because y’all never went after mArKeTz and just wanted good teams.

That article could have been written by combining any number of threads in this board. We have all said the same things.

I still say CUSA is headed for a split, probably 2023/24 when the new contracts come out.

Agreed. It seems pretty inevitable.

it all depends on the NCAA and CFP and possibly the other 9 FBS leagues. if those groups say "no" to any split, c-usa is stuck together.

RE: Conference USA hit rock bottom in 2020 (Article)
CUSA would split right now if the SBC wasn't doing so well. We've been lucky in a sense that we were able to seamlessly integrate Georgia Southern, App, Coastal, Georgia State, and Texas State into the league without much difficulty. Even though Georgia State, Texas State, and even South in their early years of football had to do a lot building, the other teams in the league picked up the slack and won in their place.

We've also successfully managed to develop rivalries within the league, even if parts of them seem forced (Such as the GS/GSU game) by the schools themselves, we're beginning to see growth in that area, and the fact that UL and Coastal hate each other right now is overall good for everyone else.

CUSA has been such a mess that if we had struggled integrating the new programs as well, I think the East schools in both leagues would have quickly gone out on their own and left the west schools to pick up the pieces.

I think that one thing that is greatly understated on here is how close we came as a league to folding twice. It might have happened in the first part of this decade had CUSA not become dead set on picking up the Florida Schools when taking an AState/UL/Troy combo would have essentially killed the league.

For the first time I feel like a real rivalry is building for UL with the chickens. It’ll be much better than the ark one, and app was never much of one considering the record.

I doubt it will every completely reach the level of our rivalry unless you both go on to dominate the league for a significant period of time, especially considering that you guys don't play Coastal next season...

I think Coastal/UL forming a rivalry is healthy for the league in general, but without regular every season meetings, it likely goes the way of what AState and App were developing in 2015...

I’m finding our rivalry to be more of a friendly “respect but want to beat” type rivalry. I often cheer for the Cajuns when they are playing anyone but App. And I like what’s going on in Lafayette.

Whereas with Georgia Southern I want them to go 0-10 every year forever.

If CUSA splits it’ll be so entertaining watching dogs-eat-dogs. Some good bedfellows will be in opposite leagues but want to stay together. One or two might even try to charm their way into the sunbelt or aac . Everyone will be unhappy.

RE: Conference USA hit rock bottom in 2020 (Article)
Simple suggestions to fix CUSA:

1. If you are going to go with the large market route, embrace it. Your current solution of mixing some rural schools with larger Urban schools makes little sense

2. Tighten up the Geography. The Sun Belt was not afraid when it came time to jettison teams that didn't fit, and Idaho and NMSU left. We understood that the best way to grow the conference was to concentrate on the schools we have and avoid affiliate membership. CUSA needs to dump UTEP.

3. Embrace the idea of swapping schools with the Sun Belt. I see no need for full geographic realignment, but both the Sun Belt and CUSA have some "awkward" fits that while currently working, probably fit better in the other conference. For instance, I would very much consider swapping Southern Miss for Texas State if I was CUSA. Texas State remains an outlier in the Sun Belt, a school that will forever have automatic rivals in CUSA. Southern Miss is very much in the same boat. Not only does it help both programs, it tightens the divisional travel costs of both leagues considerably. There's no way in Covid times schools can pay both entry and exit fees, but swap deals that help both leagues probably get fees waived.

None of this will happen, but its likely the best solution for CUSA in the present...

Southern Miss' AD has Sun Belt history as Troy's previous AD. If anyone could push that it'd be him

CUSA’s TV deal is only $2 million total?

Anyone know what the Sun Belt’s TV deal is? I thought I heard $5-10 million but not sure.

If the WAC decides they are making a run at returning football at the FBS level, CUSA can say good bye to 5-6 teams. I’m telling you guys, 23/24 is gonna be a busy time for conference change.

I dont think the SBC or ESPN have announced real $ numbers but its been assumed around $450-600k per school per year, for all 12 members.

Yes, agreed. There is a lot of respect for app from UL, and that seems to be reciprocal. Can’t say the same for arky and certainly not for the chicks.

And pretty ironic since the the laturds are known dog killers. Guess that gives them a ‘leg up’ to pee on their breathen.
