Getting Offensive
Any mention of the school down the road offends many UAB fans (I'm usually one of those), but give the devil his due. Like Bill Clark, Nick Saban was once an old school defensive coach whose offenses were largely one dimensional, predictable, and unexciting. In recent years, however, Saban has experienced a reluctant transformation: "It used to be that good defense beats good offense. Good defense doesn't beat good offense anymore... I'm telling you. It ain't that way anymore... I don't like it, but we just have to make sure we have an offense that's that way and that explosive." [https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/30177093/alabama-crimson-tide-nick-saban-concedes-defense-no-longer-key-victory]
This year's Alabama offense averaged almost 550 yards per game against an all SEC schedule. Some people might retort, "yeah but they have 4 and 5 star players and UAB doesn't." That's true. It's also true that UAB doesn't generally have to compete against those kind of elite players. It's relative.
In 2020, several Group of 5 teams have been ranked in the Top 25. Louisiana, Liberty, Coastal Carolina ... one of the big things that separates these teams from UAB is offense. All of these programs have offensive minded coaches. UAB needs an offense that is more diverse, multiple, and versatile. Here's hoping that, at least on this one thing, Bill Clark will take a cue from Nick Saban and experience a similar transformation.

Good points. Old school versus new school. I believe the NFL puts greater emphasis on offense as well. Hats off to Saban. He has adapted to the new game.

Good take. Pretty much what I've been saying (and others) in the "Talk is Cheap" thread. It's pretty obvious where the gap between is between UAB and the top of the G5. If we want to take the next step up, we need to make some changes on offense.

Getting Offensive
Ok, start your first HC job with a loaded offense and a porous defense. Then, when you're fired, start one w/ a loaded defense and build an offense based on the players you can recruit/attract. Then, when you get an extension, we can have a beer.
Saban had an immovable defense before he constructed the offense they have now.

It takes time to build a successful program. Many of our fans forget out team has only been playing competitive football for four years. In that time we have been selected to go to four bowls, won our division three times, and our conference twice. And yet for some that’s not good enough or fast enough. A lot of are fans are very Gump like in their expectations. The overreaction to losing close games wile playing a third string QB borders on the ridiculous.

Coastal Carolina became an FBS program in 2017. Liberty in 2018. But this isn't a post about program building. It is about offense and offensive philosophy.

RE: Getting Offensive
I am not satisfied with winning this joke of a conference and an even bigger joke of a division. I won't be a happy fan until we are back where we belong, regularly playing schools like Memphis and Houston.
Time is NOT on UAB's side. So many years and so many opportunities have been wasted. We need to make whatever moves necessary, as fast as possible, to position our program for the next opening. We likely don't have 4 more years to close the gap between us and the better AAC teams. They aren't letting us in unless we make the league stronger. Potential isn't gonna cut it when a share of their league media deal runs into the millions a year.
The gap is on offense, particularly at QB. Maybe coaching isn't the biggest issue, maybe we have just been under-talented there (QB). The right guy might be all that we need but we clearly need something.

Position players come and go year to year, season to season. Program funding however needs to be a growing constant for a school to progress into a new conference. It is not by accident that Bama has a consistently strong program with its income of about $150 million annually for its Athletic Department (most derived from tax deductible charitable contributions). When a program can spend about $200,000 annually per scholarship athlete, one can more easily provide the desirable amenities to attract and keep the top rated recruits every year. UAB has just begun to move its programs in that direction and has a long way to go to be able to attract the attention of better conferences. The competition for coveted spots is not going to get less intense in the new decade.

It is irrelevant IF one is content with C-USA - or what is left of it after 2030 - when more school's tail lights are visible like those of present AAC members who used to be our fellow members. UAB is not the only school seeking to advance its conference status. Being right for the 775th time is a new record.

Wow. I hope you didn't tear anything in the HUGE leap of relevance. You go from:
1) College football system sucks and we have nothing to gain in this conference
2) We have to get in the AAC
3) There's a gap between us and the AAC teams
4) That gap in on offense (?!)
5) Specifically, QB (??!!)
So am I to conclude that a) having a better offense will make us more attractive to another conference (since you already said winning in CUSA doesn't mean anything)...just score a lot of points and b) more specifically, one 20-ish year old kid playing one position can torpedo and entire program's future?

Coastal Carolina started playing football in 2003. Liberty started playing football in 1973. UAB started playing football FOUR YEARS AGO.

UAB QB's since The Return:
2017 16 TD 5 INT
2018 18 TD 16 INT
2019 20 TD 20 INT
2020 14 TD 9 INT*
We need better QB's or better QB coaching or both. We're close in a lot of other areas.
TJ3 was 7-1 for the season which is improved. I don't doubt Tylers ability to lead the team. I just wonder if his body can hold up. He's had a lot of injuries in his career.

It is irrelevant because UAB is not, will not, and cannot be Alabama. You literally choose to talk about the one program most of us despise over and over and over again. We are not Bama. We cannot be Bama. If you want to talk about their spending, go spew it on their boards. I care more about what Memphis and Tulsa and cincinatti to than I ever will what any SEC school does. Unless you can find $200,000 a year per student per year to give off of your teacher’s pension, this whole topic is completely irrelevant to UAB and where we currently are
