Freshmen Shunu and O'Connell finally in the game with just 53 seconds left. What's wrong with that picture?

Well, if nothing else, I feel like this years squad could definitely be a final four contender at the D3 level.

Nothing. They aren't going to get significant time during conference play, so why not use this time to continue to teach the guys who are going to play?

Disappointing game. Although Trice could turn into something special.

I think about VCU's freshmen vs ours. Was nice watching a game, HS winter sports is shut down in Va.

Because it usually comes down to the bench at the end of the season. Injuries, foul trouble, back to back to back games take a toll on the starters.

Honestly, I can understand the coach leaving in the starters. These guys need to play. This was a ridiculous non conference schedule. To expect us to be consistently good through this screwed up start to the season. Off for two weeks at a time. Getting tested like every other day. They were without the Pg Curry as well. They need to play. We just played 6 games in 30 some days. We usually play 13 in the non conference. Those guys will get their chances.

I understand the logic of running the upperclassmen, but to me this game just makes it clear why JJ has struggled with recruiting. If I were a freshman, as much as I might want to play for ODU, I wouldn’t want to waste a year sitting on the bench when I could play somewhere else. Especially in games like this.

I totally disagree. 8 guys in the rotation is plenty.

I disagree. 9 guys are playing regular minutes. Curry was out. And 8 others get regular minutes every game. Almost every team is like this. Those two freshman will still be freshman next year.

Curry
Green
Oliver
Zip
Reece

Strother
Hunter
Trice
Long now that he’s eligible.

8 would be fine if we had a solid 8. I've seen nothing from Long and Pilavios to convince me they should be in the rotation. If anyone gets injured or foul trouble they are in. I just hope this team and all the players improve.

Long has 2 points and 4 rebounds in 16 minutes. We gonna go ahead and declare him a bust now? He had some moments last year. Let’s give him a chance. Another 10 days off till the next game... I’m just glad we are playing at all. Schedule is a complete joke but whatever. A little bball is better than nothing. The VCU game pissed me off just like everyone else but what a joke. Two weeks off before the game. They played like 3 games leading up. Whatever. It’s done.

My thoughts thru non conference...
I like Trice a lot. Playing with better tempo. We miss Wade a ton with leadership, ball handling and defense. We don’t shoot the 3 worth a damn. Too many turnovers and mistakes. If our guards can hit a few more jump shots and stop throwing it away we could be slightly dangerous.

6-7 is enough really.

Plenty of freshman have played under Jones. Its not like we have freshman that are ready to contribute just rotting on the bench.

Not all player develop at the same pace. Some actually need development, especially in the summer of covid.

That's a pretty weak statement considering ODU lost 3 starters mid season just last year. The bench had to go way deeper than just players 6 and 7. As Blaine said many times during his tenure at ODU ... if you want to have depth, you have to develop depth.

Other schools that ODU has competed against for years play freshmen against ODU and win their share of the contest, in some cases more than their share. Do they just recruit better freshmen than ODU? Are they coached better? Both?

ODU is coming off an awful season where they needed a lot of help in the form of incoming players. If Jeff didn't recruit the right players that can contribute to the team winning considerably more games this season then that's a problem.

He has basically replaced starter 6'-7" Carver from last year's team with reserve 6'-7" Trice and the unused freshman Greek big with the unused freshman Texas big. I have no problems with Trice replacing Carver, but he alone doesn't shore up the needs last year's interior post position had. There's a good reason that both Jeff and Dave have commented already this season about ODU being undersized. One bases comments like that on who is playing, not who is always sitting, or not even on the team at all.

I guess 8:45 PM is past the cut off time for any sports reporting by the Va. Pilot.
No mention that two local teams played a game in Norfolk last night. As print media becomes more irrelevant, they will continue their march towards bankruptcy.
