So of our $50m budget, $13m...or 26% goes to capital expenditures.

what is that amount for other schools? Is it a quarter of their budget?

Negative ghostrider. Capital expenditures aren't accounted for in annual budgets. They are capitalized and depreciated. However for the NCAA reporting, which we're looking at here depreciation isn't included but the full amount of debt service (both principal and interest) is.

Doesn't JMU lead the country in student fees used to support athletics?

Football is picked on in this article, football is expensive so fine. Is this debate sincere without talking about the sports that don't generate revenue? No.

What sports besides football and basketball fill stadiums with paying alum and fans?

The pay for the services, events, policies YOU use or support argument never ends, everyone cherry picks.

I don't have kids, why do I have to pay higher real estate taxes to pay for new high schools? I don't loot, why are my tax dollars repairing looting damage?

Yep. Or, my house isn’t on fire, why do I need to pay for a fire department? Or, no country is invading our shores, why do I need to pay for a strong military? It is never ending.

It’s worth pointing out to the critics of JMU student fees (both in the Breeze article and the national publication) that the fees support not just football and other JMU varsity sports. The fees also support UREC and other facilities related to student wellness. My bet is the young woman who wrote the Breeze article (and who admitted to attending “some” football games), makes regular use of UREC or perhaps even University Park.

Nowhere in the article, the word value. JMU tuition is a good value compared to undergrad schools...assumes the area of study leads to a related job.

Is an undergrad degree from a same out of pocket expense school sans paying a penny towards sports a better value?

The article acts like the sports-costs relationship is 1 to 1 which it is not.

It's about value, not 5,000 line items to cherry pick out the lines an individual does not like.

Yup- it's a constant refrain on AGS (mostly by that idiot UNI fan Clenz), that we are irresponsible by charging the students higher fees than other FCS schools. They just can't comprehend that ALL that matters is total financial outlay vs value received.

Our tuition and fees are roughly the same as Longwood, Mary Washington & Radford but include a higher percentage of student fees....So what!? Same with ODU and GMU. The students are getting a more valuable degree from a beautiful school w/ great amenities and a superior athletics program. So which schools are charging too much???

One might question how many more students could afford JMU if not for the $10,000 each is forced to pay to support a D2 football team and an awful basketball program?

Yet the students tend to enjoy going to JMU and value all the amenities. In a WSJ survey JMU was the most recommended University so the model appears to be working and delivering a high level of satisfaction.
