Yeah I thought it was going to be free. $10 for 1 game is something not even Flo would charge.

Just a suggestion, for those that are going to bit the bullet and get FloSports...skip this Delaware St. game and the Drexel series.

This way you only have to pay for 2 months to finish the season w/ the CAA tournament instead of 3

Look, i'm not a huge fan of FloSports either, but it is what it is. Bite the bullet and cough up this relatively small amount of money to watch a vastly improved UNCW team that may actually have a shot at an NCAA appearance after three years of a nightmare.

You can watch the games and still notify the powers that be that you aren't happy with this arrangement.

I probably will end up biting the bullet and getting it, skipping the next 3 games and starting with JMU series

Total Cost for 2 months of Flo: $26.75 after NC taxes

That will get me 16 conference games plus the first 2 days of the CAA tournament. So about 22 games

That's about $1.22/game.

Begrudgingly I will probably buy in.

With online viewing being the most likely option, you're saving a lot on the cost of tickets, gas and food to go to even one home game. Be a real sport, and get the UNCW package that includes a cut out in the stands. Let's show our support for our new coach and these players.

Is love to believe that purchasing that awful deal benefits the team, but I don’t see it. It benefits the conference leadership and enables them to make more bad decisions in the future. The only way we stay away from deals like this in the future are by not buying in. Sacrifice a little now for greater good in the end.

For me, it's not about the money. It's about the incompetence of the leadership of this conference.

Whether you understand the details or not, ESPN was not an option for the CAA at this time. As i've explained, we had too many schools with their own regional TV deals that ESPN would not accept. And there were no other deals on the table that would accomodate those existing deals. They could have left it as is, with free viewing on CAASports, but the conference was looking to get something more than just an online viewing on a CAA website.

Also, FloSports does have subscribers for sports other than NCAA basketball, which means there is the potential to grab viewers that otherwise may have never heard of the CAA in addtion to a payout to the CAA. It was the best deal available under our circumstances.

We basically had two options.

1. Continue what we were doing with free games on CAASports. The only exposure we would get was to the existing fan base who watched CAA games on a CAA internet platform. No reach to anyone beyond our base

2. FloSports - An online platform only with no demands on regular tv broadcasts, allowing schools with regional tv deals to keep them. It also included income from FloSports as well as the ability to sell advertising. The plan was to use the income to pay for games to be shown on regular tv stations.

It's really a situation with details you have to know intimately, to understand why we did what we did with FloSports.

This is a good article that explains the details.

https://www.dnronline.com/dnronline/unde...13bc7.html

What D’Antonio said separates this agreement from the other opportunities the CAA had is that while FloSports holds the rights to those games it selects on the digital side, the company won’t restrict how the conference or any of its schools want to handle traditional television.

“There are a lot of different wants and needs for our member institutions when we’re dealing with 17 schools,” D’Antonio said. “Some institutions heavily value their [regional sports network] relationships and JMU is one of them. And we wanted to try to find a partner that was going to allow us to create a comprehensive media package. With Flo, we’ve found a partner that’s allowed us to do that.”

The only exclusivity FloSports is concerned with comes on the digital side.

For instance, if FloSports has the rights to a JMU football game at Bridgeforth Stadium, the school’s digital production, MadiZONE, will not be allowed stream that same game. But if the school partnered with a traditional television network such as NBC Sports Washington or MASN like Bourne’s department often does for Saturdays in the fall, that network can broadcast the same game.

I would have left it the same till other schools contracts ended and the gone to espn. Flosports is a bad deal and caa does not need to renew.

They aren't going to end their contracts, that's the point. Those deals have existed for a long time and they weren't willing to give them up to get on espn. Had the CAA voted as a group to move forward anyhow, that would have been the beginning of the end of the conference. The schools that would be forced to give up their regional deals would have packed their bags and left.

Although we don't think much of the CAA conference as a whole, we have some pretty good sized schools with large fan bases that rely on those regional arrangements for their fans.

I do not see many of the caa schools with a big fan base if you look at attendance at the games for most sports except football which i do not follow in the caa.

JMU, TOWSON, DELAWARE, NU all have big fan bases. Your focus is on basketball. This deal would also have affected the football only schools.

It's a long term play to get more nationally televised games. Covid threw in a monkey wrench, but it may have led to better things besides Flo at the end of the contract. It also may get some of the schools to rethink their position on an ESPN deal now they've had a taste of this.

Bottom line is that our decision to get the package won't have much of an impact on future decisions.

My focus is on all sports in caa except football. I attend all the sports that are held on uncw campus. Flosports was a bad deal and the caa is falling behind other mid major conferences. Jmu also wants to leave caa.

So let's all suffer for the benefit of the few. We need more national exposure. Flo does not provide that.

Attendance at conference tourneys would state otherwise.

Small market schools need more exposure than Flo can offer. It's a major step back for the CAA as a whole.

RE: 2020 - 2021 Men's Basketball Information Thread
https://extrapoints.substack.com/p/episo...dia-rights

Above is a really good article on our Flo deal as well.

No one was really interested in doing a traditional TV contract with the CAA but there was interest in our streaming rights. Free sevices like Twitch (Amazon), Facebook Watch, Stadium (Sinclair, owner of Fox RSNs), but they did not want to pay much if anything.

The only people willing to pay for streaming rights were Flo and ESPN. ESPN wanted control over everything, TV and streaming, even though they were not going to put us on TV, were going to pay less, and were expecting us to upgrade our production on our dime to meet there standards.

Flo didn't care about quality of production, didn't care about TV, and was willing to pay more, which the conference could then in turn use to pay to put regular season games on CBS Sports Network.

On paper it makes total sense why Flo was chosen. They clearly had the best offer.

My problem with everything is 2 fold
1. $12.50/month is VERY high in comparison to ESPN+. ESPN+ is underpriced thanks to Disney subsidization but the market is the market. Its a tough pill to swallow paying almost triple what other fans of similarly situated conferences have to pay.

2. The biggest pro of the deal outside of the money, Local TV, is not being used by UNCW. If keeping games on TV was such a big deal, then why are we not taking advantage of that provision of the contract?

Since our department doesn't care about local TV then for me as a fan, I would rather scrap the CBS Sports Network GOTW package, which is where the Flo $$ Is going, and put everything on ESPN plus. With ESPN+ being on the Hulu/Disney bundle it is more accessible, and that accessibility should be our top priority.

Right now we are charging our fans around $13/month so we can have games on local TV(which we don't do) and have games on CBS Sports Network (1 or 2 max). Either put the games on local TV or realize ESPN+ is the best option

Does the CAA have any conference games schedules on CBS Network this season?
