Colorado Buff Indoor Facility

Admittedly, we would still have the problem of what to do with Beer Bike, but we would have a multipurpose indoor facility for football, track, soccer, and other club sports.

Outside of the indoor track (we don't sponsor indoor track... I suspect Colorado does) there really isn't a big difference... other than perhaps size and that theirs is 'solid' likely due to snow weight.

Is there reason to suspect that track, soccer and even baseball wouldn't be able to use the facility as needed? Baseball already has indoor batting cages... I suspect also pitching mounds? but they could certainly do drills... some parks are entirely synthetic... practicing running/sliding on turf.

The buffs site doesn't say it, but can they do 'field' events inside?

Soccer should be able to utilize the bubble provided that the dimensions are appropriately sized. I don't think that there is sufficient size for indoor track activities aside from field sports.

I don't have any data that corroborates field events, but this is what their website says:

Quote:Athletes from almost every sport are able to take advantage of the spacious 108,000 square foot, climate-controlled facility that boasts a full football field, a six-lane, 300-meter track and plenty of room for conditioning, agility drills and individual workouts. The track has the potential to be among the fastest indoor facilities in the world thanks to the long straightaways and the altitude advantage.

The Colorado football team uses it on almost a daily basis in the mornings for the offseason conditioning program and will have it available for regular season work for the first time in the fall of 2016. The track team conducts indoor workout sessions for distance runners and sprinters, and athletes from other sports such as soccer and lacrosse also make use of the facility for conditioning workouts, practices and individual skill sessions.

The IPF was designed for efficiency. It is connected directly to the main Champions Center weight room. Football players can walk directly from their locker room, through the weight room and into the IPF.

We don't?

Should we return the C-USA Indoor Track and Field championship trophies that we "magically" won?

This year at the C-USA Indoor Championships the men finished a strong fifth (0.50 point behind UTEP for 4th).

The women simply had an outstanding meet winning the C-USA title behind a bunch of outstanding performances...Hannah Jackson was in top form winning the 200 M and Grace Forbes was outstanding winning the mile and the 3000M.

I'm sorry WRC... I was honestly not aware that we sponsored indoor track, since we don't have an indoor facility. Where do we practice for indoor track when it's raining outside or 100 degrees?

These days, if you do track and field, you do indoor track and field. It's similar events, downsized to fit inside, by the same athletes. Practicing for one is basically practicing for the other.

RE: HRS / EZF Athletics Construction Thread
Quick blurb copied from Wikipedia,

"Basic indoor venues may be adapted gymnasiums, which can easily accommodate high jump competitions and short track events. Full-size indoor arenas (i.e. those fully equipped to host all events for the World Indoor Championships) bear similarities with their outdoor equivalents. Typically, a central area is surrounded by a 200-metre oval track with four to eight lanes. The track can be banked at the turns to allow athletes to run around the radius more comfortably. Some have a second running track going straight across the field area, parallel to the straights of the main circuit. This track is used for the 60 metres and 60 metres hurdles events, which are held almost exclusively indoors.

Another common adaptation in the United States is a 160-yard track (11 laps to a mile) that fits into a common basketball court-sized arena. This was quite popular when races were held at imperial distances, which gradually was phased out by different organizations in the 1970s and 1980s. Examples of this configuration include the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden, and the Sunkist Invitational formerly held in the Los Angeles Sports Arena.[98]

All four of the common jumping events are held at indoor venues. The long and triple jump areas run alongside the central 60 m track and are mostly identical in form to their outdoor counterparts. The pole vault track and landing area are also alongside the central running track. Shot put and weight throw are the only throwing events held indoors due to size restrictions. The throwing area is similar to the outdoor event, but the landing sector is a rectangular section surrounded by netting or a stop barrier.[99]

In addition to hosting the World Indoor Championships, the IAAF has hosted the IAAF World Indoor Tour since 2016."

Which gets back to my frustration. We could have built a world class indoor facility that would have benefited all of our sports and given us flexibility to host indoor events.

I am grateful for the bubble, but we could have achieved more.

When it comes to athletics, Rice could always have achieved more, but always chose not to.

File under: it could be worse: Rice-type problems follow Coach graham to Hawaii...

As much as we have issues here, at least for the time being ol' HRS still is better than places like Hawaii's Aloha Stadium...

Aloha Stadium to shut down operations indefinitely

Quote:Sources tell KHON2 that Aloha Stadium has been deemed unsafe to hold crowds of any manner and is facing condemnation.

The stadium, which was built in 1975, has been home to the UH football team and Hawaii state championship games for the past 45 years. Additionally, it also hosted the Pro Bowl, the NFL’s annual All-Star game, for almost four decades.

Since opening, the stadium has deteriorated rapidly and dealt with numerous issues, including rust.

In order to maintain NCAA Division I FBS status, teams must average an attendance of 15,000 once every two years.

Thursday’s news leaves UH in a major bind, as no other stadium on Oahu is close to the 15,000-seat quota. Clarence T.C. Ching Stadium on the UH-Manoa campus currently holds under 5,000 fans.

The new Aloha Stadium, which is expected to hold anywhere from 30,000 to 35,000 fans, is not projected to be ready until 2023 at the earliest.

So, a little something to be thankful for as we close out the year. thanks to ol' HRS, even though it's not perfect, still a great place to watch football...now about that. Oh well, Merry Christmas!

Saw Rice play there in 2003.
As with many things in Hawaii, they scraped together the funds to build, but provided very little for maintenance.
It was a rusty hulk in 2003.

It was originally constructed to be reconfigurable between baseball and football, but the apparatus to move the stands broke down very early, and they froze it in football configuration.

That's a shame. It's an iconic venue. I hate to hear it. A friend of mine visited the islands years ago. He said it looked dilapidated from the outside. Condemnation is probably a little late.

When we played there for the 2014 Hawaii Bowl, it needed to be condemned then.

Can't imagine what 6 more years of salt air has done to it.

All that view does is remind me that the whole place needs to be pressured washed again. And why are we letting people sit on concrete?
