RE: OT: New Name for Indians
The Indians losing their minority owner in the last couple years when he left to buy the KC Royals is a huge part of their current financial situation. Hopefully they can find a new minority owner soon.

From a strictly business standpoint, the idea of changing the name actually isn't good business. A fact that's often ignored. You're incurring massive costs to update the stadium (just replacing the big sign over the scoreboard won't be cheap). You're writing off millions in merchandise that you won't be able to sell anymore (part of why they're going to wait one year to actually change the name). You limit yourself in what jersey variations you can sell going forward (no throw back jerseys). And as petty as it is, you will lose some small subset of your customers who are upset by this. Plus, the people you're appeasing for the most part, are not part of your customer base.

So just looking at it from a business standpoint it's not a great business move. However, I'm hoping that the change will help them attract a minority owner to replace Sherman. Very possible that in 2020 investors are afraid to jump into a team with a racial controversy.

RE: OT: New Name for Indians
Just a couple more thoughts...

The Cleveland futility in sports extends to the Cavaliers - from what I see, they're in a hole with no apparent way out. Their only hope is that the next LeBron James comes along and they happen to have the first pick in the draft again. In 11 LeBron years, they've averaged a 51-31 record. In the last 10 non-LeBron years, they've averaged 24-54. Dismal. No path to being entertaining again

Also - I remember listening to the sports buffoon on the radio after the Browns announced they're leaving. I remember him grumbling "I hate that us sports fans are stuck with the whims of whatever millionaire owns our teams...this really stinks... what can we do so that we aren't rooting for a team that can leave at any time...what can we do where we aren't rooting for players that can free agent away...etc". And my thought was "College Team!" Columbus doesn't have these worries (except with soccer)

I blame all the bad contracts the Cavs took on during the LeBron years are what caused the Cavs to be bad when he left. The Kevin Love contract was a terrible one to sign after he left for LA. Hopefully by the end of that contract in three years the team will have enough young talent to compete and possibly grab a good fa to push them over the top.

I'll throw another name I like in the mix: Monarchs.

Monarch butterflies are prominent around Cleveland in the summer and Monarchs were the nickname of one of the more storied Negro League franchises.

RE: OT: New Name for Indians
The Cavs problem has been the same thing for a long time. They do not know how to draft. They just got lucky that someone that was so good even they couldn't screw it up was in the draft a year they had the top pick. Then because he was from here, he came back after he left. It's very sad how easy it is as fans to sit and watch a draft and go "probably should've taken that guy instead". Then 5 years later it's clear you were very right.

For a small market NBA team the draft is everything. You can't lure FAs without over paying. So you need to either get stars through the draft, or trade assets for stars... And those assets are either draft picks or guys you drafted that turn out to be good.

If you haven't noticed, the 'Cleveland Rockers' were shut down 17 years ago. Not many people notices they were here, and fewer noticed when they weren't.

The Rockers were owned by NBA until their last season, when Gund bought them, and then when he lost interest, they were shut down. I don't know who would own the name now.

I heard that the Rockies would not like this. I have no idea whether they could block it but being a MLB team if the Commissioner agreed they probably could.

Except for LeBron and Irving they pretty much have done nothing very good since the Price, Daugherty, etc era. I know Sexton scores about 20 a game but I wonder what he would score on a team that had additional scorers. Okuro has looked ok maybe there is some hope for him. He looks like he is 12 years old though. The league probably doesn’t take him seriously yet.

Should we name them after the Rock & Rock HoF when they HoF cares so little they don’t even do inductions there? That’s like doing the baseball HoF ceremonies in NYC and ignoring Cooperstown.

You would have thought that games 6 and 7 in Cleveland would have been packed solid with Indians fans. Cub fans actually found it cheaper to buy tickets from a broker, fly to Cleveland, and get a hotel than what it would cost to see the Cubs in the World Series in Chicago.

And what really blew my mind was that the seats that were blocked off in the upper deck stayed blocked off. Apparently, it wasn't profitable to hire someone to open those up.

Oh, I live near Chicago. Cubs fans were dropping serious bread to get those tickets. They’ve been waiting 400 years or something and they all wanted a piece of it. I saw the same thing with the Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup. It was novel. It’s not now. That wouldn’t happen again.
I like to blame fans for not showing up the last few years when the team was competitive but let’s face it, it’s a football town much more so than baseball. The only time the Tribe drew fans was when the new stadium was built, the team was loaded with talent and the Browns were no longer here to take peoples entertainment dollars. Sad when stadium went from 70-80k down to 35-45k and even sadder when they tear out the update deck and put ridiculous looking shipping containers up there.

There were guys available that I liked a lot better than Okoro but I agree he's looked solid so far, albeit in 2 preseason games. Sexton had been a good scorer and he looks like he'll be, by no means, a missed pick. But I still don't think he was the "right" pick. You take an undersized scoring guard that you know will have to work hard just to be an average defender, but you pass on an oversized true PG that projects to be a two way player in SGA. If you're going to make that pick your guy better come out of the gate looking way better than the guy who is clearly more physically gifted. Unfortunately for us, SGA looks like he's on the path to being a star. I'm still happy with Sexton. He's a solid player. But he's got size limitations that you can't teach out of him.

The concept of a two way player is something our front office doesn't understand.

I hadn't heard Buzzards suggested before; I like it. Use the logo from WMMS, after paying them large sums of money for it.

Of all the names that were kicked around somebody said this made the most sense? Sounds like a 3rd rate arena football team. Only saving grace is it’s better than the Washington WTF football team.

I can see why the name "Indians" is no longer viable, even though it is nowhere near as offensive as Redskins. But Guardians is so blah.

Idk, I actually liked it the best of the names floated around. Plus it rhymes with Indians.

As a friend of mine said... When they announced the OKC Thunder I thought it was the stupidest effing thing I'd ever heard. Now it's just normal.

I like the Thunder. There are a lot of teams named after weather events.

My sister-in-law suggested the “Lake Effect” when we were talking. She also came up with Squalls. Oh, well, too late unless I win the superlotto and buy the team.

Doubt an MLB team with a new name choice would use an NBA team's nickname. But who knows?
