This is a big game. We'll be taking their best shot. I haven't anticipated a Rice game this much in quite awhile.

Does anyone know the status of Michael Collins, Austin Trammel, and Otoviano for the UAB game?

I was anticipating the first three OOC games this year in this way, until they disappeared from the schedule.

Sources: UAB, which has had four straight games canceled, is dealing with some challenges headed into its game against Rice this weekend. Currently very low on numbers, potentially in the low 40s in terms of scholarship players. All-conference WR Austin Watkins has opted out.

This is not good. I’m wondering if the “challenges” are all due to opting out our if COVID is another factor.

If we win, I bet we play SMU in the Frisco Bowl.

Bill Clark: UAB is down 25 players right now but will have a few back this week. The RBs and DBs were hit hardest through testing and contact tracing. About 12 starters and role players will be out against Rice.

Well that doesn’t sound promising.

If they cancel this one, I hope they make the call before Saturday morning.

UAB seems committed to playing short handed:

https://uabsports.com/news/2020/12/9/foo...-rice.aspx

It makes sense because they need to play (and win) to get into the conference championship game.

They say they have had no new positive COVID results in the last two rounds of testing.

I admire the UAB attitude. This adds a new dimension to "Anybody, any place, any time". It adds "with anybody".

I hope this game gets played.

The cynic in me expects cancellation due to extra scrutiny from The Administrative Powers That Be on a UAB team that is publicly dealing with a substantial COVID outbreak. Who wants to put odds on another round of PCR tests being ordered Saturday morning?

As I understand the conference rules, teams are require to do 3 PCR tests each week. Assuming UAB travels Friday, a 3rd PCR test should be done Thursday evening, allowing for results Friday morning before departure.

The real question is will Rice require a 4th test if there are any positives in UAB’s 3rd round? And if so, will they use the unreliable rapid test that resulted in the 10 false positives for UTEP?

A Saturday morning test would all but guarantee delay and/or cancellation of the Saturday game (see UTEP).

One reason I would not walk across the street to attend this game.

I’d walk across the street. My question is whether or not to drive half way across the state

I don't walk very well. Our travel times would be similar.

In any case, it was hyperbole. I live a five hour drive away (followed by a 30 minute walk from the parking lot).

Even at a casual pace of 30 minutes/mile, you must park in a medical center garage. More hyperbole?

Not much. I have some serious mobility issues. I refuse at this point to relegate myself to a wheelchair or a mobility cart. I would rather walk slowly and carefully than not walk at all.

Well, my drive is about an hour shorter, and I walk at a decent pace, but can’t go long distances without my back calling timeout. If I knew the game was being played, I’ll likely make the trip. We’ll see how convinced I am of the game actually being played.
