RE: Official Game Thread: Abilene Christian
Hate to say it, but I am looking at this year as an exhibition season. Just try to play (and win) as many games as we can, stay healthy (COVID and otherwise), get some chemistry going, find some team leaders and spark some excitement for next year with everyone coming back. If it works out and we can get most of the games played, win the conference, win in Asheville and go to the NCAA then even better.

Just heard The Coaches Show. Shay seems unsure of how we will perform. Seems to be worried about the match ups. He did praise Truth Harris and Amaefule a bit. But is keeping his cards close to his vest. I so far like the way he conducts himself. Finally a game in Florida where I live and cant go...03-banghead .....Go Bucs Go .

Yes I agree that Coach handled the show very well. I am encouraged as I think about every player has the talent to get playing time. Of course Coach would not give away many secrets but I was left feeling good about our team. Also, I think Coach said he expects to play three games in Florida. I sure hope that is right. Go Bucs!

Considering that Abilene returns 7 of it's top 8 players to a team that won 20 games and 27 games the last 2 years, while the only rotation player that Bucs return is Vonnie, this is kind of remarkable. The Bucs play, coaching and recruiting have earned them a ton of respect. I think we will show that we deserve it by season's end. I'm less sure about the first few games. But I'm hopeful.

Let's go Bucs!

Bucs web site still talking about playing three games starting Wednesday at 11:00. Are those teams still cancelled?

Article says they are trying to find a 6th team to have 3 games each day. Maybe 1 diff 6th team each day.

(11-21-2020 09:19 PM)swvabucsfan Wrote:  Blue Ribbon picks Abilene Christian to finish 2nd in the Southland Conference, behind Stephen F. Austin in first. They finished 3rd in the Southland last year (20-11 and 15-5). This is Abiliene’s 3rd year in D1. They won 27 games and 20 games in their 1st 2 years. KenPom rates them #156 (#185 in offense and #139 in defense) to ETSU’s #167 (#197 in offense and # 154 in defense). They are a 1 point favorite in KP – FWIW, since in this first game of the season KenPom doesn’t yet have the statistical basis which makes their rankings so useful.

They lose their top scorer in 6-2 guard Payten Ricks (14.3 ppg). But they return their next 7 best after him. So a huge edge in experience to Abilene.

Their strength is in the front court which Blue Ribbon rates 1st in conference. 6-8 220 Jr. Forward Joe Pleasant (11.0 ppg, 4.2 rpg) is picked for all conference. Their center is 7-0 240 Sr. Kolton Kohl (9.6 ppg, 4.3 rpg). 6-6 220 Jr. F Clay Gayman averages 9.5 ppg and 3.8 rpg. 6-5 265 So. F Airion Simmons has 5.4 ppg and 4.1 rpg. It’s a strong, experienced front court.

Guards are led by 6-0 Sr Coryon Mason (8.8 ppg with 1.2 steals). Point was split between 5-7 Jr. Damien Daniels (5.2 ppg, 3.1 apg and 1.1 steals) and 6-0 Sr. Reggie Miller (3.0, 2.1 apg, 1.0 steals). 6-3 Sr. Makhi Morris adds 3.8 ppg, but missed the last half of the season to injury. 6-5 Jr Tobias Cameron was a bit player (1.0 ppg). Help may come from 6-4 Rs-So Immanuel Allen (12.2 ppg in JUCO 2018-19) – he is said to have been their best defender and best athlete in practice.

They only shot.309 from 3 last year with 6.7 makes per game. But their defense held opponents to an even worse .298 with 5.0 makes. They held opponents to 65.3 ppg. Their scoring seems to come from in close, where they were .532 from 2, 52nd in D1.

They grab 9.5 steals, 6th in D1. Rebounding was even (-0.2 margin). Turnover margin was an excellent +5.8, second in D1 to UNCG's 6.4.

Their strength has been defense from the big front court. Quick 6-5 Ledarrius might be an interesting matchup for them! But that big, experienced front court will certainly be a challenge for the Bucs.

These guys made the NCAA’s 2 years ago and came close last year. They expect to contend again. But KP only has them a 1 point favorite.

This is step one in a long journey. Anybody watching the NCAA struggle with football games knows that there will be a lot of ups and downs. Clemson vs Florida St was postponed at the last minute. Some teams (Wisconsin) have missed half their games. We'll have to be in it for the long haul, with the patience and toughness to work through the rough spots. A team doesn't get built overnight.

I can't wait to see some real basketball. Go Bucs!!

Hi, my first post on your site. I’m the board admin for Cat Chat, the ACU fan forum.

Kudos to you for your scouting report. You have summed ACU up nicely. The Bucs will know a lot more about ACU than We know about you, given the changes in your program from last year to this.

I know y’all are excited to see how all the new faces perform for the first game under a new coach.

Best of luck to y’all tomorrow and in the tournament.

Thanks for the compliment!

Even a short writeup like the one you mention uses data gleaned from multiple sources including
https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1
https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/sch.../2020.html
https://kenpom.com/team.php?team=Abilene+Christian
And of course, the best source for mid major info preseason, The Blue Ribbon 2020 Yearbook.

Later in the year data from current year’s games becomes key, and the value of Blue Ribbon's preseason predictions fades. But for now they are the place to start.

All this mystifies at least one guy on this board, so I’m glad to hear from an intelligent fan that appreciates it. You’ve got a fine program in Abilene, and this game should be a good challenge for both teams. Frankly I’d much rather be playing an experienced team like you guys after we’d had a game or two under our belts.

Good luck!

No mystery to me, as you said go around and copy and paste **** from other places, then make hard-hitting observations like the guy who scored 22.4 points a game last year and was name Conference POY is their best-returning player, They have 6'10 guy who rebounds well (last year 8.6 a game) Wow.

I ignored you while everyone fawned over your "reports" for some reason you took a shot at me so I hold a grudge and don't know you or have any reason to like you if I did. But I guess it is cool you can take time from shooting commercials for Hotels.com to your skills in Word.
Keep doing it and bask in the glow, I will keep not reading the same as I skip Doc's long-winded posts.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to put these scouting reports together, so the rest of us don't have to. It's much appreciated.

(And, thank you, ETSUfan1, for your continuing efforts on our behalf.)
