BYU has a great chance for a NY6 bowl. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if they get it. But that’s nowhere close to guaranteed, even if they beat San Diego State and are 10-0.
The NY6 games are the Rose and Sugar Bowls. Let's assume those are filled by Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and Oregon. So that leaves:
Fiesta ..... TBA vs TBA
Orange .... Notre Dame vs Florida (SEC runner-up)
Cotton ..... Texas AM vs Oklahoma (Big 12 champ)
Peach ...... Cincy (G5 rep) vs TBA
At this point, we have placed all the teams currently ranked ahead of BYU in the AP and Coaches polls, and we have satisfied all the contractual tie-ins. So with 3 slots available, it seems extremely unlikely to me that a 10-0 BYU would not get one of those NY6 spots.
Even if you don't think an unbeaten PAC champ gets in to the CFP, such that they take an NY6 spot, then that will almost surely mean that a team in one of the NY6 spots above, like a Florida or Notre Dame, gets in instead, so it doesn't alter that math. The only way I don't think they get in is if the CFP rankings that come out Tuesday have BYU substantially lower than the AP and Coaches have them. We will know that soon enough.
