Screw BYU.
They chose to go it alone as an independent. Let them deal with the consequences of that. Why should we give them their shot to get ahead of us. That would be stupid.
Plus, I have a wedding to go to on the 5th that is dominating my day. The 12th works better for ME.

I don’t see what playing BYU does for us. Even beating BYU isn’t going to have us jump any of the teams in front of us and likely some of the undefeated teams behind us (Wisconsin, Oregon, etc...). To make the CFP we need help and playing BYU doesn’t change that.

It would be the biggest win of the season and a significant boost to our SOS.

No doubt those are facts. Let me ask a question as an example. Do you think the committee is going to put us in over a 1 loss Notre Dame if we beat BYU?
Now substitute all of the teams in front of us with Notre Dame and the undefeated teams behind us that have only played a handful of games like Wisconsin. The answer is no to all of those so I don’t see where we benefit.

We would only benefit if we could schedule a game against Oregon or Wisconsin. A game against BYU would only hurt the loser, not help the winner.

Yeah but our sneaking into the playoffs is a lot more about what others do than what we do. We're almost certainly looking at OSU, Alabama, and ACC champ. There's going to be massive pressure to take ND if they have one loss and a split with Clemson. Florida beating Bama would guarantee a second SEC school.
The only way adding BYU helps is if you think they are above us, which I don't. And even in that case it only helps if there's an opening for the playoffs which I think is unlikely.
Not to mention our administration has been one of the most cautious and haven't allowed a fan in all year. It's hard to believe they'd be open to adding an extra game

I think it gives us a better chance than if we don’t play them, yes. It doesn’t make us a lock, no. But it helps the argument. Good wins always do.
What about flipping it around? Does it hurt us to beat them? Sure, it would hurt us to lose to them, but that’s a negative attitude. We shouldn’t be afraid to play a top 10 team, we should embrace it.

Not that I’m afraid to play BYU, but from my view there is nothing to gain in playing them but there is plenty to lose if they beat us. I just don’t see a game against BYU moving the needle forward, but if we play and lose it could definitely knock us out so there just isn’t any reason to play the game IMO.

Yea, this is basically the way I see it from the CFP Committees point of view. It would only move us ahead of BYU, who we should be ahead of already and definitely would be by the end of the season IMO.
There is just little, to nothing, to gain from playing BYU.

Lots of teams in the top 10 don’t play each other, but the committee judges them by the games they play. SOS matters a lot, especially since we’re not a P5 team. Anything we can do to boost SOS is a positive.

We could have a better SOS than Notre Dame, but we still wouldn’t get in ahead of Notre Dame because of perception and bias.

Maybe. Probably. But I’d like us to have the best argument possible.

That’s fair, and it’s said that’s the was it is. I guess an argument could be made that it may be what pushes for expansion as well. For this season though I view our path to the playoff as dependent on what other teams do.

IF BYU wanted to play UC, they should have joined the AAC when they had the chance. As it stands, we're not competing for the same prize so playing on 12/5 is meaningless.

If we can't clinch an AAC Championship game by now, we don't deserve to be there. The conference is out to get us. And the AAC refs suck. Screw Herbstreit. Bryant should be starting.

Navy will not beat Memphis and Tulsa.

Our first goal is to win the AAC Title. Having 12/5 as a bye after 6 straight games is idea.
If people want us to play The Mormons then do it in the Peach Bowl.

I love watching this team play football. If there's an opportunity for a non conference opponent 12/5 I'd much rather watch them play than sit due to how it might affect playoff chances. I believe P12 just loosened rules to allow non conference games to replace cancelled games. But it has to be here, no west coast trips the week before Tulsa
