Not surprisingly we have a new 2nd place, Ohio State at Penn State got 6.53M. However in 2019 they got 9.43M so 6.53M is a huge drop. In 2018, they got 9.141M. In 2017: 9.868M. You have to go back to 2016 when they only got 6.478M.

The new top ten baseline this season is 4.44M for Mississippi State-LSU, currently #10 for the season.

There are two games to watch Nov. 7. One is Florida-Georgia, 3:30pm on CBS and the other is Clemson-Notre Dame, 7pm on NBC. Both should land in the Top 10. Florida should draw more viewers than Tennessee so they should be above 5.77M. Could they beat OSU/PSU for 2nd? How about Neb/OSU (6.18M) for 3rd? The top Clemson game is Miami-Clemson (4.61M). If Notre Dame deserves its own NBC contract, they need to destroy that rating.

Finally, something you may never see again. CBS finished 3rd in its time slot behind both FOX and ABC. And neither Mississippi school was on!

LSU-Auburn was a blowout. ND-GT wasn't really a lot better. Texas-Oklahoma St. won the time slot with a thriller in OT.

And Alabama was 3rd in its time slot vs. Miss St. Although it was ESPN vs. network. OU/TT blowout was better and tOSU-PSU was much better.

Looks like only 1 in the top 10, but 5 in the top 18 for the season. So a pretty good weak and only tOSU-PSU was a matchup of traditional powers.

RE: 2020 College Football TV Ratings top 10 games- thru week 8
Sports Media Watch wrap up:
https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2020/11...enn-state/

"The Big Ten has played on just two of the first nine college football weekends thus far, but already accounts for three of the season’s top five ratings."

"The Big Ten accounts for three of the top five, with the previous week’s Michigan-Minnesota matchup ranking fifth."

"This season’s top five games are the only ones thus far to average at least five million viewers, compared to 18 through nine weeks last year. It bears noting that Ohio State-Penn State would not have ranked among the ten most-watched games at the nine-week mark last season."

Sports Media Watch often compares games to the previous year's game in the same slot but the game could be different. I like to compare to the previous year's matchup. OSU/PSU was way lower than last year's PSU/OSU game. On the other hand, this year the teams were 1-0 vs. 0-1 while last year they were 9-1 vs. 10-0. In normal years, you want the game as late as possible if you assume both teams will be good (which they usually are). Texas/Oklahoma was another game really far down from 2019 but both Texas and Oklahoma are down from last season. Georgia and Florida this Saturday aren't too far off from last season and the game should decide the SEC East so how far their ratings compare to 2019 should tell how much COVID-19 really is hurting college football viewership. In 2019, UGa-UF got 6.98M.

More "White Knight Badge" stuff, I guess:

CLEMSON-NOTRE DAME IS MOST-WATCHED NOTRE DAME ON NBC MATCHUP IN 15 YEARS

No. 4 Notre Dame’s Thrilling Upset of No. 1 Clemson in Primetime on Saturday on NBC Peaked at 14.2 Million Viewers in Double Overtime

Clemson-Notre Dame Averages 9.44 Million Viewers Per Fast National; Most-Watched Notre Dame on NBC Matchup Since “Bush Push” Game vs. USC in 2005

STAMFORD, Conn. – Nov. 8, 2020 – NBC Sports’ coverage of Saturday night’s top-five clash between the No. 1 Clemson Tigers and the No. 4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish averaged a preliminary* Total Audience Delivery of 9.44 million viewers across NBC TV and NBC Sports Digital – making it the most-watched Notre Dame on NBC game in 15 years, according to Fast National Data released today Nielsen, and digital data from Adobe Analytics.

Last night’s game, which peaked at 14.2 million viewers from 11:30-11:45 p.m. ET (during the second overtime), will likely rank as the most-watched college football game of the season so far when official viewership, which includes out-of-home audience, is issued on Tuesday.

Clemson-Notre Dame (7:35-8:27 p.m. ET and 8:57-11:47 p.m. ET) delivered a 5.4/12 household rating.

Those numbers will rise, and are particularly impressive since NBC stupidly pre-empted it for a political speech, pushing it over to USA Network for a time.

Will likely surpass Georgia/Alabama to be #1 in terms of overall average viewers.

Congrats to Notre Dame (and Clemson).

Other ratings: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/sk...-2020.html

This week the Pathetic 12 started up and their ratings show why they are named as such.

Stanford at Oregon on FS1 didn't even get 2 million viewers and had fewer viewers than Michigan and Indiana on FS1. To be fair, it went against Clemson/Notre Dame.

As for Arizona State/USC as the Big Nooner... 2.331 million and a 1.34 rating. They lost in their timeslot to West Virginia at Texas. Last year's worst Big Nooner all season was West Virginia/Oklahoma which got 2.54M and a 1.7 rating. Of course there have been a lot of Big 12 duds this season as Big Nooners (Arkansas State-Kansas State 1.79M, 1.1). Once things go back to normal, FOX should just give the Big Nooner to the Big Ten permanently.

This Saturday on FOX is a quadruple header, a Big 12 game with neither Oklahoma nor Texas and three Pathetic 12 games! None of them will probably crack 3 million viewers. One of them has Washington State. Who the heck wants to watch WSU?

BTW, what does "gd there" mean?

"In other action, the Arizona State-USC Pac-12 opener averaged a 1.3 rating and 2.33 million viewers on FOX Big Noon Saturday — down 28% in ratings and 14% in viewership from the same window last year (Nebraska-Purdue: 1.8, 2.70M). The game, which aired shortly after the major networks projected the winner of the presidential election, ranked second in its timeslot behind West Virginia-Texas on ABC (1.6, 2.75M) and ahead of Michigan’s upset loss to Indiana on FS1 (1.0, 1.75M)."

"Elsewhere in the Pac-12, Stanford-Oregon averaged a mere 0.9 and 1.66 million on ABC’s Saturday Night Football, down 50% in ratings and 44% in viewership from SMU-Memphis last year (1.8, 2.95M) and the lowest rated and least-watched game in the 14-year history of the series. The game faced both Clemson-Notre Dame and coverage of projected president-elect Joe Biden’s victory speech."

The election and Clemson-Notre Dame clearly took center stage but the Pathetic 12 was down 14% from NEBRASKA-PURDUE last year and down 44% from two G5 teams last year and was "the lowest rated and least-watched game in the 14-year history of the series". It's not like CBS has never had a high rated Alabama-LSU game vs. SNF before. How come those games outrated the Pathetic 12? And this was with Oregon and a team from the Bay Area playing! Yesterday Arizona at Washington aired in primetime on FOX. If that game was vs. Clemson-Notre Dame and Joe Biden's speech, could you imagine the ratings?

Any network that spends significant money on the Pathetic 12 in the next contract is throwing money down the drain (unless they're able to bring in Texas and/or Oklahoma). Both FOX and ABC have, according to Matt's College Sports Blog, required Saturday prime time appearances on each network (ABC one and FOX FOUR each season). I don't see either network agreeing to that again (FOX may agree to fewer but not four unless they're desperate).

RE: 2020 College Football TV Ratings top 10 games- thru week 8
This week's ratings news: https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/college...v-ratings/

Notre Dame-Boston College cracks the top 10 with 5.14M viewers and a 3.0 rating, putting them at #7 for the season. Among the top 10 games, the ACC gained its 2nd game, the SEC is down to just 4 games (Big Ten 3, Big 12 1). ABC now has 3 of the top 10 games with CBS now having just 3 (FOX 2, NBC 1, ESPN 1). The time breakdown is the same since a 3:30pm game replaced a 3:30pm game. The 10th place game is now Oklahoma vs Texas with 4.81M.

Ohio State is back on FOX playing Indiana in the Big Nooner. Based on record, you have two undefeated teams. But Indiana isn't well known for a big fan base. Will Indiana/OSU crack the Top 10? If they do, the Big 12 will be completely out of the Big 12. Now Oklahoma State and Oklahoma play on ABC in prime time so the Big 12 also could get a big rating there and replace its own game.

Speaking of the Big 12 and the Big Nooner, last week's Big Nooner was West Virginia at TCU. 1.37M, 0.85! The lowest rated game I've ever seen in the Big Nooner! They got more viewers for Arkansas State-Kansas State (1.79M) back in September! They lost in the time slot to Indiana-Michigan State on ABC (2.44M), Miami-Virginia Tech on ESPN (1.96M), and Penn State-Nebraska on FS1 (1.72M)! When a WINLESS Penn State team gets more viewers ON CABLE than you do, tell me why the ACC should invite you.

Finally in Pathetic 12 news: The good news is they had a season high. The bad news is they still haven't cracked 3 million. Oregon/Washington State got 2.73M (1.5). Will they get 3M for a game this season (other than the championship game?) By comparison, on ABC in prime time at the same time was Wisconsin at a bad Michigan team. They didn't crack the Big 10 but got 4.69M (2.6).

Only one SEC game was nationally rated (SMW doesn't list SECN games): Arkansas-Florida on ESPN in prime time got 2.44M (1.3). CBS didn't have an SEC game.

Top Non P5 ranked by viewers:
UCF-GT 3.06 M (Week 3, ABC, 3:30pm)
UCF-MEMPHIS 1.90 M* (Week 7, ABC, 3:30pm)
ARK ST - K STATE 1.79 M (Week 2, FOX, noon)
TULSA-OK ST 1.73 M (Week 3, ESPN, noon)
LA-LAF-IOWA ST 1.68 M (Week, ESPN, noon)
HOU-CIN 1.39 M* (Week 10, ABC, 3:30pm)
NAVY-TULANE 1.35 M* (Week 3, ABC, noon)
APP ST-MARSHALL 1.25 M* (Week 3, CBS, 3:30pm)
SMU-TEX ST 1.23 M* (Week 1, ESPN, 4:30pm)
BYU-HOU 1.16 M* (Week 7, ESPN, Fri 9:30pm)
BYU-NAVY 1.15 M* (Week 1, ESPN, Labor Day 8pm)
ARMY-CIN 1.08 M* (Week 4, ESPN, 3:30pm)
ARK ST-MEMPHIS 1.03 M* (Week 1, ESPN, 8:15pm)
*Asterisks indicate games between non-P5 teams.

The high mark was 3.06M but of course Georgia Tech was involved. Another disturbing trend is that 12 non P5 games cracked 1 million but only 4 games since Week 4 have. Week 4 is the first week of the SEC and once that happened they got the top time slots, pushing the non P5's to lesser time slots which will obviously hurt their viewership. In Week 1, none of the P5's played so Arkansas State/Memphis got the prime time slot on ESPN and was able to get over a million viewers.

Here's a good challenge for the non P5. This week because CBS lost their SEC game they will air a MWC game instead (San Diego State/Nevada) (https://themw.com/news/2020/11/17/cbs-to...ame.aspx). SDSt is 3-1 and Nevada is 4-0. They will go head to head with Wisconsin/Northwestern on ABC (3:30pm) and Kansas State/Iowa State on FOX (4pm). Beat the Big 12 this week in viewership! That would be a great accomplishment for the MWC/G5's and a huge embarrassment for the Big 12. I'd love to see it! Of course I'll probably be watching my conference (Big 10) and try to inflate their ratings and their next TV contract.

I would eliminate any games involving a P5/Notre Dame. What we want to see is the rankings of games that have just G5 teams involved (and including the G5 indies - BYU, Army, Liberty).
