RE: App State @ Coastal Carolina
App has played the following defenses:

2
76
104
107
112
116
Campbell

We are somewhat of a product of the defense. We scored 17 on number 107.

RE: App State @ Coastal Carolina
Watching CCU games, I just don’t think they have the athletes to cover the entire field, this game is simple, if APP runs the typical offense, run between tackles, run outside, throw safe sideline pass, occasionally pass over the top, CCU wins the game, but if we pass some on first down, and we take some shots over the middle, especially when they load the box, love to see the TE leak out behind the linebackers, and force CCU to make plays with athleticism instead of schemes I don’t think CCU has a chance.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned that has been very concerning to me this year (and for the past 3 or so) is App's inability to get off the field on 3rd and longs... We seem to do better on 3rd and shorts. Time and again Saturday we gave up first downs on those long situations. That will have to be corrected.

It's interesting that according to NCAA statistics, we are essentially joined at the hip in terms of defense as a whole. We are probably more of a product of our defense than you guys. Not sure how our histories ebb and flow without deviating too much from the mean, even entwining at times. Our defenses are good. Not going to lie though, 3rd and anything I consider to be commercial break and do something else at that moment.

I hear you, 1st and 2nd downs don’t concerned me, but man, I get nervous with 3rd and 7-12 yds, not sure what’s going on, but we can make any qb look like Tom Brady on 3rd and long.

We will be testing that theory this weekend with Army, who have a combined completion percentage of 42%, worst in the league...
Does make me wonder though, if we are running an "App St" defense and we have similar issues, then what philosophy is in error? There's a bug in the software somewhere

All starts with pressuring the QB. This defensive style provides the QB time on third and longs.

RE: App State @ Coastal Carolina
Apparently, last game on 3rd down our defense we allowed an average of 8+ YPP when rushing and 11+ when passing. I guess 3rd down "prevent" mode is basically when we prevent the defense from coming off the field. Looks like I'll be getting a list of things that I can do around the house on 3rd downs. At this rate I'll have the cleanest house since Martha Stewart went to jail.

I think another factor, teams are more willing to throw the ball in the middle of the field on 3rd and long than first or second down and you combine that with a zone/prevent defense you get pockets in the middle of the field where it’s easy to pick up a first down.

That's a solid analysis. I'll have to watch for that

For Coastal, facing App State's defense is a lot like facing Georgia Southern's. GS's front 7 is probably better (not by a lot), but App is also not going to have the busted coverages we had. App shouldn't need to get many points to win the game. IMO App needs to just do what they do on offense and not try to be something you aren't. If they try to be something they aren't they'll turn the ball over and lose. They're not scoring lot either way IMO.

RE: App State @ Coastal Carolina
I get nervous about this game every year. I don't make predictions. I like where we are at, but you never know.

FWIW, we had to play a game w/o our starter earlier this year and we still managed to put up 382 yards and 28 points against GaSo. Hasn't App's backup played before, and against us? I thought I saw that somewhere.

Posted this on CoastalFans.com (https://www.coastalfans.com/forum/index....0725.0)...

Common Opponents and Stats...

We both played Campbell, Arkansas State, and Georgia State and we both went 3-0.

Combined score for App: 114-51
Combined score for CCU: 146-44

Yards Allowed vs common opponents: (Pass/Rush) App/CCU
Campbell: (188/110) / (137/205) (298) vs (342)
Arkansas State: (295/73) / (349/36) (368) vs (385)
Georgia State: (152/148) / (30/76) (300) vs (106)

Total: App: 966 CCU: 833

Yards Gained vs common opponents (Pass/Rush) App/CCU:
Campbell: (131/404) / (273/193) (535) vs (466)

Actually, App State's total defense is ranked 1 spot ahead of us, but not by much. This is going to be a weekend of solid football games!

Coach's show last night, though not predicting, Clark said that signs with Zac are pointing in right direction for Saturday.

I know that most are thinking Coastal big but hold on just a second. App ain't dead yet. These boys have lots of grit and I see a nail biter going late in game to be decided. App wins by 6.

CCU is one of the smartest, well coached, fundamentally sound teams in the country, they aren’t going to give this game to us, but I question are they athletic enough to make one on one plays in space, maybe they are, just in the games Ive watched, no one has really challenged them to cover the entire field, like I said before, if APP comes out and plays this, we are going to run no matter what CCU shows us, and we don’t atleast test the middle of the field, I think odds are good CCU wins this game.

CCU scored 28 on us, but if you look at our game with CCU, you will see the miscues that we had on offense. I doubt you guys (App) will have the same miscues. Our defense is obviously virtually the same as yours. The defense will keep you in the game, but I think your offense is more apt to make forward progress than ours so I have no reason to think Appy isn't going to put up a fight and have a solid chance of winning.

Yeah, if App's OL play is even slightly more energetic, I'd give us about a 65% shot at winning this game.

Add in Tony Petersen calling plays like his job is on the line, I feel pretty good.
