Was listening to the Andy Staples podcast on a long drive today and he and Matt Fortuna mentioned something interesting. They got into a discussion about Harbaugh's position (their belief is if he's not at Michigan it'll be mutual and they won't embarrass him), other P5 coaches on the hot seat, and P5 budgets and mentioned how earlier this year everyone assumed there would be belt tightening and coaches who were on the hot seat would be more than likely saved. Said something along the lines of "it's easy to think that way when everyone's 0-0 and the donors aren't marching with pitchforks." will be interesting to see what other coaches see their pink slips.

I thought it was an odd hire when South Carolina hired him. If he couldn't succeed at Florida, which has considerably more built in advantages, what made them think he could succeed at South Carolina.

I'm sure he was devastated carrying out his box of stuff from his desk and that $13.2M check in his back pocket.

Harbaugh was the man at Stanford in the PAC 12, but can't cut it in the BIG10. I'm sure there's a reason for that.

All of these guys were the man at one point. Did they lose their work ethic? Did time pass them by? Or is it the commitment of the University they landed at?

Even many years back I had heard that Stanford run was more David Shaw (then OC) than JH. Also, keep in mind his tenure was 4-8, 5-7, 8-5 and then 12-1. Stanford was stronger in the ensuing years after Shaw officially took the reigns.

CBS sports on South Carolina opening:

Luke Fickell, Cincinnati coach: Michigan could use him, but that ain't happening for the former Ohio State player and assistant. South Carolina is a fit but not the fit. When Fickell departs Cincinnati, it's going to be for a place where he can win a conference championship. That's how good a job he's done for the Bearcats. Winning the SEC East is a heavy lift for anyone not coaching at Florida or Georgia. Look for Fickell's name to surface if Texas parts with Tom Herman.

Kansas is mission impossible. I the last 50 year they have had a winning record in 10 years. In fifty years they won 8 or more 4 times and 10 or more twice.
In the fifty years KSU had winning records in 21 years, 8 or more in 17 and 10 or more in 9 years. But that is because of Bill Snyder. Without Snyder KSU is also mediocre. Hard to recruit to Lawrence and Manhattan. Little local talent.

The only time it is for almost all of the guys who take these gigs is the golden parachute second contract that often pays them millions per year for 4-5 years after they get canned. I think this is the last year of Butch Jones collecting 5 million a year for not working in Knoxville. Anyone think he regrets taking that job? Me neither.

Yeah, I mean, for modern Cincinnati coaches (sans one) it kind of is greener in all cases. Kind of reflects the ability of our ADs in that time...and the ability of the US Senate lol

Murphy: Been at Harvard (alma mater) for 25 years now.
Dantonio: MSU for 12 years, 3 Big Ten Championships, and about $40M
Kelly: ND for 10 years, played in 3 BCS games/CFP games
Jones: 4 Years at Tennessee with another 5 years on their payroll
Tuberville: US Senate

I get the generational money and all that, and I used to agree with you on this issue- but, I think with the way things ended at UT (and various Title IX issues on top of that) he won't be able to find another HC gig unless he goes back to the MAC or goes to the Sun Belt. On top of that with his hokey stile he is genuinely mocked and ridiculed by people with a national platform.

No amount of money is worth taking away your dignity for a guy with any sort of pride.
