Game Day had a touching feature on this.

RE: 50th Anniversary of 11/14/70 Marshall Plane Crash
We’re now to the point that even if the crash hadn’t happened, a lot of them would’ve died by now of natural causes. The players who were 19-22 then would be 69-72 now. The coaches would be 75-85, some older than that.

No life-lessons to be learned, no deeper “meaning” to be discovered. Just pain and grief, that’s all.

We’ve lost several members of the Young Thundering Herd already: Nate Ruffin and Reggie Oliver to name a couple.

RIP.

Why was it necessary to play football in 1971, instead of waiting a season?

Because If they didn’t play in ‘71, the program probably would’ve been shut down. Marshall was a basketball power at the time. We had gone to the NIT semis (the NIT at this time was the big NCAA tournament).

The surviving players wanted to continue and honor the the ones that died in the crash. There were several players who didn’t make the trip. Nate Ruffin and Don Dedmon (AD) were instrumental in getting the program restarted.

The movie was accurate in that Marshall accepted damned near anyone who could run onto the team. Accurate that Dedmon got the NCAA waiver so we could play Freshmen (which was not allowed at the time). Accurate that Lengyel and Dawson went to WVU and talked with Bobby Bowden about the veer.

In reality, there were two flights due in that night. An Eastern Airlines flight and Southern Airways 942 (the Marshall plane). A firefighter found a players wallet (not a playbook) and that’s how they knew it was the Marshall plane. The cause of the crash is still unknown. The narrowed it down to: pilot error or barometric altimeter malfunction.

And just to show you the fabric of Huntington, there were I believe 18 children who lost both parents. Several stayed in Huntington and were raised by neighbors. Some left the area, but then returned to school at Marshall. The community rallied around the school and the families of those that were lost. We all wanted football to continue to honor what those lost were trying to accomplish.

Miami had a very heated rivalry with Marshall back in the day, way before I became a fan though. Always enjoyed the movie however, and the Gameday feature was very well done.

Sad stuff. It is great that Marshall continues to excel. That is a nice college town, been there a couple of times.

Virginia Tech put up some banners to honor former Hokie players who were on the plane when it crashed. Frank Beamer has said that if Frank Loria had been alive, he would have probably gotten the VT job over Beamer. Beamer went on to say, he probably would have been on Loria staff instead of being the head coach.

Toledo played Marshall earlier in the season at the Glass Bowl... I might still have the football program, and remember paging through it weeks after that tragic event... Very sad indeed...
I always admired the resiliency of the program/community to recover and bring it all together once again ... 04-bow
