Agreed. Sad if schools are allowed to use this health crisis in such a cowardly manner.

I don’t think any school or coach is doing this.
Well based on what the hog guy said.......
Call it a difference of opinion.

Athletics people are competitors.

.....which is WHY they want to win Championships.

Why would LA Tech cancel a home game (Rice), a game against ULM in Shreveport (maybe), and then play two CUSA road games at FIU and UNT.......UNLESS of course, UAB loses another CUSA game this season (to UTEP?), which would put LA Tech in the drivers seat for the CUSA Western division title and a spot in the CUSA championship game?

Skip knows all this of course. Skip may have decided to not play another CUSA game until he sees how UAB fares against UTEP (on 11/20) & S Miss (on 11/27). Skip knows that LA Tech has already played 5 CUSA conference games (3-2 record) and that UAB (2-1) has only played 3. (The UAB vs N TX game is also postponed this weekend) So, why should LA Tech take all the risk unnecessarily? There are no brownie points being given this year for LA Tech to play 8 CUSA games while UAB plays only 6, or 7 (7 only if the UNT game can get rescheduled, which it currently is not). Skip knows all this, and is in the position to cancel the Rice game with no penalty, avoid any chance of another conference loss, and take a "wait and see" attitude toward the rest of the season. He knows he has already played more conference games than UAB will likely play this entire season, so why risk it?

Yep. This is a strategic cancellation, but they are just not going to tell you that. I hope some of you are keeping up at home.

Which is exactly why cancelled and un-played postponed conference games should be forfeits by the cancelling team.

Agreed. Sad if schools are allowed to use this health crisis in such a cowardly manner.

I agree, too. It's absurd that coaches are allowed to use COVID as an excuse to cancel games at this point. If a coach can't manage his team well enough to have 22 players ready to go on Saturday, then he should be forced to eat a forfeit if he cancels a game.

OK by me. Makes Rice 3-1. Thanks for the offer.

But I still don't think anybody is trying to manage their way to a division championship by ducking games. that would make the Championship pretty much meaningless.

No dufus, it doesn't. That's the whole point. There is NO PENALTY for cancelling games --which is really stupid-- so teams are doing it strategically. I guarantee you if some of these teams were having to eat forfeits for cancelling, we'd be seeing much more football. But everybody is turning this into a season of "chess moves" instead.

Why in the world would you think competitive people wouldn't do something strategic to win a conference championship if they could do it and not get punished or penalized for it? You're seeing is with your own eyes. To deny it is foolish.

So youre saying that if say Rice and USM are both 3-3 and all paying head to head this week (as an example) and Rice cancels a game and USM can play that you should not be penalized and Rice gets the nod? BS

No. That's not what I said at all. In the example you cited, Rice would eat a forfeit, because they cancelled the game. I don't know how you got so lost over a principle that's so simple.

I think coaches don't keep their jobs by backing into championships with forfeits and dodged games; they keep them by winning games on the field, keeping the alumni happy, and you cannot win games if you don't play. The alumni are not happy with no football. I think any coach who tried to defend a "winning" record based on mostly forfeits would and should be run out of town.

I think the same holds true for ADs.

Everybody wants to play and win. Nobody wants a magical check mark.

In any case, we have played every conference opponent so far who has not canceled on us, and have every other conference opponent scheduled. So far, WE have not canceled any conference game. Postponed, yes; cancelled, no. So what games should we forfeit?

I'll be so glad when the 2020 season is finally over.

I'm sure the Tide will not have any problem claiming yet another NC without playing another game this year

LSU effectively used it to dodge arse whippings by Florida and Bama. Coach O may be dumb but he is not stupid!

Exactly. Instead of having a 2-3 record right now, LSU should be 2-5 with additional losses to Alabama and a very hot Florida team. With upcoming dates @ Arkansas, @ TX A&M and at home against a Lane Kiffin led Ole Miss team, the Tigers could still easily finish the 2020 season with a 2-7 or 2-8 record. Depends on if they still play the rescheduled Florida game in "the Swamp" (Dec 12th), and if they reschedule the BAMA game.

Could this be the worst 1-year fall from National Championship grace that we've ever witnessed?
