RE: gregg marshall fired
Pitino is not an option. He took the Iona job because it is minutes from his grandkids. He isn't leaving his family to move to Wichita.
I doubt anyone currently coaching will leave a school at this point in time. Its bad form and leaves their prior school in a lurch. As for available candidates, I heard Matta as an option. I can't see it. He can get a higher profile job when and if he decides to return to coaching.
Beilein could be a caretaker candidate. Not sure he is interested in coaching again. But, for some reason, he seems like a guy who would be willing to come in and do the job for this season, till Wichita can do a full search.
That said, given the last date, I am guessing they name an assistant as interim with a chance to keep the job if they have a successful season. If it opens up next spring, I think Darian DeVries at Drake will be a strong candidate. He was a long time assistant at Creighton and has pretty decent success at Drake in his first two years. He lost pretty much everyone two years in a row and still won 20 games back to back.

Unless I'm missing something, the Chris Jans incident he got fired from Bowling Green for isn't sufficient to ban the dude from coaching Wichita State 8 or 9 years later. He seems like the safest bet to keep the program at a high level.

I agree .. I would love Chris Jans. He still has connections to Wichita. I've heard rumbling there are reason he wouldn't come back .. but no idea what those are.
Also depending on his feelings on the Gregg situation (he was a special assistant at the time of the "bad" things) he might not be willing to hop to WSU if he's fired.

-Clemson's Brad Brownell?
-Former Wake Forest coach, Danny Manning?
Witchita State has resources. The school can attract winning coaches or coaches locked into schools with resources that can't compete with Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky.

CBS' independent confirmation of Goodman's story, whose original story was also backed up independently by the Wichita Eagle, seems to be the last nail in the coffin for Marshall.
It's sad. No gloating here. We need as many good teams in this conference as we can get. Now Wichita gets the Jim Calhoun/UConn test. Let's all hope they pass it.

I think he just got certified as an agent. I think he is moving in that direction rather than coaching.

That's snark, right? I hope so.
If not, that's a pretty ridiculous thing for a Temple fan to say, considering Temple's ethical orientation stemming from its founder (Author and Baptist Minister Rev. Russell Conwell, who wrote the "Acres of Diamonds" discourse) and the strong emphasis Temple's coaches have always placed on developing young players into high-functioning adults (as opposed to abusing or mistreating them!).
WSU's act was their first step toward re-establishing the reputation of their athletic department. Kudos to them.
Furthermore, they will not become irrelevant, because they have major donors who will provide WSU with the wherewithal to make an outstanding transition through this episode. If they hire the right Head Coach and staff, which they have the resources to do, they will return to the top tier of the AAC within 2-3 years, possibly sooner.

WSU has an excellent fan base. I would probably rank them just below Memphis and roughly equal with Cincy. Not an elite power team level fan base but definitely comparable to many decent P5 schools for support. Wichita is a minor league town so the competition for the sports $$ is not there and support should remain solid.
They find a solid hire the fan base will stay. It might drop off a tad during a rebuild though. They will lose the bandwagon some more...already down a little in 2019-20

WSU did the right thing and I hope it all works out for them but more so for the conference. That said - just because a school has deep pockets doesn't necessarily mean they will land on their feet or right the ship immediately - or, even any time soon. Just about every program has made a bad hire or two that sets back the 'Return to Glory' schedule and things don't always work out like you think they should. They came into the conference with a lot of bluster and thunder and perhaps fairly so - but, to this date they have not been the team they - or we - thought they were. All just my humble opinion and I hope they right the ship quickly.

How exactly does one define "passing" said test? If they win a national championship this year or next, but struggle to reach .500 and are basically a total failure of a program after that, have they passed the test?
I just hope they don't have 4-5 down seasons, then decide to go back to the MVC to be with their old rivals just as they start to get good again

I thought the answer was obvious. Passing the test means regaining some consistent semblance of the past glory attained by the single iconic coach no longer there.
UConn is still taking its test, lol. Ollie was a flop, even though he won a natty right out of the gate. Now Hurley seems to be going in the right direction. But it's a long way back to anything close to the top of the mountain.
Wheaters haven't even started yet, lol, so who knows. It's by definition a long process, unless you catch lightning in a bottle. I thought UConn had it with the 2014 natty, but then no.
And as of this minute, Marshall isn't even officially gone.

Sorry, you mentioned UConn so I had to take the opportunity to take a dig at my own team lol. The question was more in jest. I do find it to be an interesting question though, especially in WSU's situation since they're looking for their first natty still.
If they did get a natty in year one or two, but then kept having sub .500 seasons, would that count as a successful hire? Would someone who came in and got them to the tourney almost every year but never had any deep runs be considered a more successful hire? It kind of highlights the subjectivity of what "success" is. I guess it's ultimately up to the fans to decide, but still interesting to think about if they do end up in a coaching search, which seems more and more likely.

You'd think they'd be able to land a big name coach.

**** it, I'll coach Wichita State. Will be a little weird coaching against my beloved Cincinnati, but I'm all in on the Shockers once I sign the dotted line.
