RE: American Conference Rivals
I think the series has to actually be competitive to actually call it a rivalry. It also has to be a series that’s regularly played and isn’t ancient history. I wouldn’t honestly consider ND Navy a rivalry. It’s a big brother little brother thing, but not a rivalry anymore than Ohio State Northwestern is a Rivalry. Both series have been played more than 80 times. But one school has clearly dominated.

I wouldn’t mind a one sided rivalry (only one team thinks it’s a rivalry) if the series was actually relatively close and it was still played frequently. (Houston v Tulsa) but you can’t consider a team that’s whooped your butts year after year for decades or one that refuses to play you for decades a rival.

No beef with this part of your post, because you started out with the words "I think," thus making it clear that this is just your own opinion and allowing the discussion to continue.

The last half of this sentence seems (perhaps unintentionally) to suggest that you don't want to have a discussion about this, but just to state your view on the topic and somehow expect everyone who has stated differing opinions above that your view is the "correct" one.

I'm guessing that you actually do respect the other opinions above, but missed the opportunity to engage with those opinions. It would have been more interesting if you were to try to refute them point by point, or to discuss the pros and cons of various definitions of "rivalries."

A lot of people do this, and maybe we all do it sometimes. I have to remind myself not to state opinions as if they are apodictic certainties.

That’s because there is logic behind my opinion. Logic being that you’re not someone’s rival when they beat you into submission year after year, or when they refuse to interact with you at all.

I don't see UCF vs ECU as a rival. When they were clawing to get into the big east we had an online thing but our fanbase could care less. Having extra tickets I know which teams are in demand and ECU is not one of them.

Especially considering the final game/championship last year, coupled with this year's beat-down. This could get heated. 04-cheers

UM/Cincy the basketball carries over into the football as well.
You just want to beat them, not as intense as UL but close.
Houston is more recent, not aged yet.

I'm all for it! I look forward to playing Memphis in both major sports, much more so than any other AAC school.

This. A lot of the Western teams (Houston, SMU, Memphis) are usually hotter tickets on our end.

we have a great league and we’re all striving to have equal opportunity’s in today’s college sports and cincinnati was sure lucky to win that game yesterday against houston

A couple years ago, I would have agreed. But after the butt-whoopin Cincinnati just put on us last week, I have a feeling Memphis fans are gonna be super concentrated on Cincy for the foreseeable future. I mean... we hold the all-time record over them 23-14. I mean.... we don't just "looooose" to Cincinnati... Damnit.

It’s heating back up. Damn you Nick Van Excel!

Houston has legit potential as does UCF.

I do as well with Cincy. This conference could use some hate. Not one sided beat downs with a team we have played forever.

This thread seems to have gotten away from the op's topic of AAC rivals. However, to me a rival or a rivalry exists when BOTH teams have an intense desire to beat the other team. Therefore some of your examples fail the definition of rivals.

Houston might consider Texas a rival, but Texas does not consider Houston a rival.

Tulane might consider LSU, Auburn and Ole Miss rivals, but they do not consider Tulane a rival

ECU might consider NC State and No. Carolina rivals, but they do not consider ECU a rival.

The same goes for Temple and Penn State.

Tulsa might consider OSU, OU and Arkansas rivals, but they do not consider Tulsa a rival.

Exactly. Houston doesnt really have any "rivalies" anymore. Our big games now are just when we play a P5 team or a ranked team---or even key teams that are in contention for the conference championship (especially if we are also in contention). We dont really have a team that is a big game regardless of whether we are in contention for the league or not. Im hoping SMU's resurgence might make that become the kind of game everyone looks forward to every year.

The only series over 30 games that doesn't feature Tulsa (3 series) or Memphis (4 series) is SMU vs Houston. Most of the series started in the 60s as well, especially the ones over 25 games, Houston Cincy is late 50s, but if you put lump them in, seven of the twelve most played series begin in that 12 year period 1957-1969.

Nothing beats Civil conFLiCT, it's a damn shame UCONN had to leave the conference. Maybe they can have UCF-UCONN out of conference every year??
