Bowl question
Assuming the Tigers don’t win the Access Bowl slot this year, and end up with an invitation to a lesser bowl - Birmingham or Boca Raton for instance - do we accept it?

I’ve heard that the minor bowls will happen, as most of them are owned by ESPN. ESPN has to have content to broadcast, so there will be games. I expect that with limited ticket sales due to social distancing, bowl payouts will be reduced. I believe we lose money on minor bowl trips anyway, so with a reduced payout, it would be worse.

How can we accept a bowl bid, knowing we will lose money, after the Athletic Dept laid off so many folks earlier this year due to reduced revenues?

Get ready to see 0-8 Vanderbilt playing 1-7 Rutgers, because no one except for P5’s will be able to afford to go to bowl games.

Wouldn’t want to play them this year. We are terrible.

Yep, which means it will probably happen.

3 win teams are going to be bowl eligible?

RE: Bowl question
To answer the original question, yes you go to any bowl game regardless of payouts.
I would expect the conference, tv partners, & bowls to work together to make things close to cost neutral for the schools. Those lesser bowls rarely draw over 20k anyway. The real bowl losers will be the 2nd tier P5 schools that get $1M + for their payouts as those payouts will be dramatically impacted by reduced crowds allowed.

They’re 2-4. How bad do they need to be before it’s okay to play them?

Actually yes. It may be the only time they are bowl eligible in the foreseeable future.

Just because attendance was low for these bowl games doesn’t mean tickets weren’t sold. The bowls usually require the participating schools to buy a certain number of tickets.

The lower level P5’s will be the only ones able to afford to go to lower level bowl games. They are not the losers in this situation, they will be the ones benefitting from it. Sure, they lose money on the bowl game. But they can afford to take the loss on the bowl game because of the $20MM TV check from their conference’s TV deal. And, they get to go to a bowl game despite a losing record.

RE: Bowl question
I don’t have the contracts, but pretty sure teams are not required to buy tickets, but must sell their full allotment to get a full payout.

I don’t believe the American conference will allow the embarrassment of having a team decline the conference’s bowl exposure opportunity over basically bowl game travel costs. And I seem to think each year they try to work with bowl games & tv partners to limit travel costs & maximize fan attendance by assigning teams to games close to them. Which leads us to Birmingham more regularly than it should, which won’t be as bad when their new stadium opens.

I guess you are correct in that it will benefit the P5 & allow them them to fill all of their bowl slots since 6 wins are not required.

My early November bowl prediction is us vs SEC team with sub .500 record in Birmingham Bowl.

We will find out shortly.

I haven’t looked at bowl schedules, are any of them being delayed or are they still starting middle of December?

RE: Bowl question
I'd imagine bowl costs would be greatly reduced this season. Instead of a week there I would imagine we would travel the day before especially if it's a close bowl game.

That would make sense. Bus the team down to Birmingham the day before the game, and back home afterwards. We may get our wish to play UT after all.

I expect Tennessee is pretty high on Steve Ehrhart’s list for the Liberty Bowl, even with a losing record.

I expect bowls to be much less of an event this year. There won't be the week-long list of events. It will be more like a regular game. I expect there will also be pressure to largely regionalize the games, where possible. We will likely be looking at Birmingham, Mobile, or Frisco as our destinations - if the Liberty doesn't invite.

Payouts are largely based on ticket revenue, true. So that will be reduced. But costs will as well. You cut out a few nights stay at a hotel for 150 people, you save. You bus instead of fly, you save. etc.

Don't kid yourself. The P5's are feeling the pandemic impact just like the rest. Yes, they get more tv revenue. But it's not like they've been saving that money for a rainy day. They spend a lot more too. Recent articles on places like Stanford, Rutgers, Minnesota, Iowa have been documented by sportswriters. Many P5 coaches have taken pay cuts - like Harbaugh at Michigan and Norvell at FSU. And a few weeks ago, the mighty Ohio State University with all of their wealth announced a projection of a $107 million deficit this year.

Vanderbilt should be fine then. I don't see where they have spent any of their SEC welfare check money.

This is the year where UT might agree to play us knowing they could lose.

There's a lot of people that want to get rid of Pruitt. They might think losing to Memphis would put the last nail in the coffin.

Correct, Nick Carparelli (head of "bowl season") said geography and matchups will play a bigger role and travel will be limited to 2 days for teams involved. The AAC has 7 guaranteed bowls (8 with CFP bowl). Assuming all conferences fulfill primary ties, a few G5 schools will be left out...more if additional bowls begin to cancel. I'm thinking Montgomery or Frisco for the Tigers. Birmingham vs. SEC prolly goes to someone with a higher final standing.
