Jack Fox
Jack had an unlucky (for stats) day yesterday. His two kicks came from midfield and the opponent 40. He came in with a 53 yard avg, and it's now 52.5 which leads the league. His net of 47.3 also leads the league.

RE: Jack Fox
NFL record for punt average yards per punt is 51.4 yards per punt. It's kind of a longstanding record - the record was set by Sammy Baugh in 1940.

Heading into this week's games, Fox's current average is 53.4 yards per punt.

Something to keep track of......

Sammy Baugh's granddaughter went to Rice and is in my year. Just a bit of fun trivia.

Box score also shows he had a fumble, but it was not a turnover. Anyone see the game that can share what actually transpired?

This ESPN box score and play-by-play -- give a fumble to the long snapper, not Fox. It was recovered by Fox, who kicked a 55-yard punt.

Quote:4th & 9 at DET 19
(10:54 - 1st) D.Muhlbach to DET 7 for -12 yards. FUMBLES, recovered by DET-J.Fox at DET 7. J.Fox punts 55 yards to IND 26, fair catch by N.Hines.

Google blurbs of articles in the two Detroit papers (Free Press & News) seem to indicate that it was a low snap, but that Fox got the punt off. But the entire articles are behind their paywalls.

Fortunately, this mlive.com article does have the lowdown:

Quote:Don Muhlbach turfed the snap on a punt attempt deep in Detroit’s own territory, but Jack Fox was able to not only handle the ball, but still got off a 55-yard punt.

And this video of Detroit blocking an Indianapolis punt on the next series of downs includes the statement: "... just a moment ago the Detroit Lions avoided disaster when their punter picked it up off the ground ..."

Thanks for the research and update! Looks like ESPN updated the box score after I looked at it. Good for Mr. Fox!

2 punts today for a 46.5 average. That knocks his season average down a bit but he's still ahead of Baugh (I think he's around 52.8 or 52.9 for the season now?).

1) 37 yards to the Minnesota 33 (out of bounds)
2) 56 yards to Minnesota 26 (returned for -3 yards)

RE: Jack Fox
Fox has slipped a bit the past couple of months so he didn't get to Baugh's record. Now he's in a 3-way battle (with New England and Seattle's punters) for the title of highest punting average for the season. Fox was 3rd heading into the week but he should have passed New England's guy today. He'll need a bit of help from Seattle's punter to end the season 1st.
