RE: Thanks Ty Linder
Ty Linder is one of the truly great people in college athletics.

There is not a kinder person in the field. While at KSU, he was always willing to do anything in his power to help a student-athlete, inspire Golden Flashes fans, support his colleagues, and raise the reputation of the university he loved.

My hope is a new A.D. will bring him back.

The way he was treated by Joel Nielsen and his alma mater is one more black eye for the university.

if the Nielsen-to-Villanova rumors are true (and no, not as athletic director), that announcement can't happen fast enough. The leak that Nielsen has been told his contract will not be renewed for another athletic season provides some hope.

Shame on you, Joel, for allowing this to happen the way it did. So many people like Ty, who bleed blue and gold and earned about one-tenth of your annual haul, are now unemployed so that you can continue to treat Kent State like your personal ATM... and while offering zero value in return for that ridiculous salary.

Ty has always been a giant who didn't realize the true heights of where his voice could carry him. He was willing to stay in Lilliput because it was home. He'll be back behind the mic, and if not at Kent State when Joel is finally gone, then at a school that will appreciate his talent.

Kent State Athletics will never be the same.

What happened?
[/quote]

He was one of the layoffs to save money in the athletic department. The way in which he was let go, however, was an extremely cold and calculated way to treat someone who has given so much of his life to Kent State.

Hopefully Ty will tell the story when he can. He is probably too good a guy, however, to call out the people who kicked him to the curb without so much as a thank you for all he had given the university.

College athletics has always been a cold business. But it is chillingly cold at KSU under Nielsen's reign. And it isn't necessary. A Laing Kennedy would have at least showed he cared... or maybe even spoken to Ty. Maybe a phone call? A note left in the mailbox?

KSU was home for Ty, though, so even when you are prepared for being treated as if you as just another expendable piece of meat (or as Joel likes to call all of us, "replaceable"), it hurts a little deeper.

It may seem like my hatred for Joel is over the top, but if I had $10 for every head coach, former head coach, assistant coach or former assistant coach, former student-athlete, and administrator who I've heard say "I hate Joel Nielsen for what he has done to Kent State Athletics," I might have been able to use it to save KSU the money it needed to keep Ty as "The Voice of the Flashes," the way he should be.

Ty's salary was a blip on the radar. Letting him go did nothing to solve the problems facing KSU Athletics. Now... getting rid of almost half a million a year by dumping Joel... that might have moved the needle. The shortsightedness of Joel was demonstrated in the decision and the way it was handled. Someone with Ty's personality and longstanding relationships could have been a huge help in fundraising for KSU and the athletic department. He tried to offer help, and was given a cold shoulder years ago. If Joel had at least faked that he and KSU cared about him, Ty is such a nice guy that he would have gone out of his way to continue to help KSU even without a job. Instead, now some of KSU's biggest donors are going to be asking the same thing you did ksur1, "Hey, what happened?"

Ty is a class act. Always had a good word for fans and donors. He had complete passion for Kent and was “true” blue and gold.
His broadcasts were solid and he was very careful to praise when deserved
And criticize as needed .
No doubt Ty will land just fine and as always Kent is the loser
So tired of us losing alums that care. The core fan group is shrinking also,
Athletic Dept cares very little.

I'm sorry! It's very sad.

And infuriating!

I wish President Diacon would show that he cared about people like Ty and so many others who have been hurt by Nielsen. It was more than a year ago that Diacon promised another climate study.

Joel will be long gone by the time that study sees the light of day. If it ever does. And if he is long gone, he will have nearly another $1 million of Kent State money in his bank account.

I keep hearing that Diacon is an honorable man, but I don't see anything honorable in his handling of Nielsen.

Diacon supposedly keeps Nielsen around because he says he finds Nielsen easy to work with.

That's not a good enough reason. Having someone who bends his knee and has no desire to speak truth to power (or can't recognize the truth) is the reason why past presidents were willing to increase the salary and keep around an athletic director with no moral compass.

What's the old saying? "Evil triumphs when good men (and women) do nothing." Sadly, the last three KSU presidents have allowed evil to triumph and get filthy rich on their watch.

The news about Ty is very disheartening. So many of us, including myself, have gone through downsizing. But this does not pass the smell test. I have no idea what the “financial burden” Ty had to the KSU athletic department. But you really must consider the intangibles Ty brought along in addition to announcing. Ty is the voice of KSU athletics. Go to Youtube & search on any of the famous KSU athletic clips & Ty’s voice was a constant. With his tenure at KSU, Ty’s tenure also spanned decades of alums & fans with his positivity & transparency with KSU athletics. If the AD had any marketing sense, he would have exploited Ty’s marketing abilities.

I have not been closely following the AD situation, but if this Villanova story is accurate, the KSU president should make an effort to move this along before the AD’s contract is up, hire a new AD at a reasonable salary, & offer Ty to come back to his rightful position as “Voice of the Golden Flashes.”

I'm speechless right now. The athletic department can use a big shakeup up right now and I think we all know where that starts.

Let me get this straight... We can't go to the games in person. So we have to watch/listen to them. Then they took our announcer away? Ain't that some s#!t? I'm sure whatever unpaid student they replace him with will know most of the players names by mid season at least.

This is the best post on this topic. Ty and David are guys I consider friends. And I have spoken to Ty. No doubt he is disappointed. Most of us are disappointed for him, because he is a great guy. But let's not put this all on Joel. 2020 has been funky. Tens of millions have lost their jobs. Joel was given the unenviable task of slashing a hell of a lot of money from the payroll because of COVID and the changing of the budget. Anyone who has owned a business or has P&L responsibilities at their job understands this predicament. It's not fun. Actually, it downright sucks. Joel took a paycut (as did several other coaches that I have read) and at 10% it may have been equivalent to what they were paying Ty. IDK the specifics. Regardless, it sucks and as I stated, I am disappointed.

That said, I cannot defend how it happened. But I cannot prosecute either. IDK. Ty didn't tell me much of anything as he is too classy to do so. I didn't pry. We spoke briefly on what's next and I just wanted him to know I was in his corner. If you are anti-Joel, that's fine, but I would be surprised if this was something that was on his radar before he was instructed to slash spending (and keep all these teams going).

2020 has been a long sh*tty year. Let's get to 2021 together as Flash fans and see what it will bring.

I agree. I understand layoffs.

I'm sure I would have lost my job, too, if I was still at Kent State.

And I would have understood. Difficult decisions need to be made.

The problem IS, like Danny said, the way it was done. And in that point, the blame lies solely with Joel. Ty gave most of his life to Kent State, and was treated like he was just another nameless face.

Even if Joel hated Ty, he could have at least wished him well.

Joel has never shown that he cares about anyone other than himself. In fact, I am certain that he doesn't care about anyone beyond himself, his family, and pleasing the president and the board... He has admitted as much in the presence of a Kent State head coach who tried to talk to him about the morale of the department.

At a school like Kent State that had budget issues before the current crisis, the athletic department needs to be a family that works together to fight the good fight and make more out of less.

Instead, Kent State is a place where everyone is told they are replaceable, and because of that, staff and coaches keep their heads down and try to avoid a boss they know does not care about them or the department.

If Ty was laid off by someone like Laing Kennedy, who clearly cared about him, he would continue to go out of his way to help his alma mater.

Instead, KSU has alienated another person who loved the place.

Kent State is willing to make the difficult decisions when it impacts the little people. I said the other day that Ty made about one-tenth of Joel's salary. Turns out, he made less than one tenth.

Ty gave more to Kent State every day he worked at that university than Joel has provided in his entire tenure as AD. But KSU won't make the difficult decision to get rid of him – a move that would have made a difference during the current financial crisis, and I have no doubt, would have made KSU Athletics function at a higher level.

Let the president know how you feel.

Removing Joel Nielsen would have allowed KSU to keep at least 10 people who were laid off, including Ty... all of whom care more about KSU and bring more to the athletic department.

Ty recently told me how nice it is has been to hear from "so many people who care about me or enjoyed my work," and how much that meant to him... But, he then pointed out that his name is somewhat recognizable because of the job he did... "Think of all the others who worked so hard for KSU that people don't know about who lost their jobs. I feel for them."

It has been about 5 years, and multiple offspring since my partner in crime and I attended basketball games with any regularity. Listening to the games on 640 was the best alternative.

I truly enjoyed each and every one of Ty's calls and was always a bit disappointed if he wasn't behind the mic.

I always loved the way he pronounced Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center and I never say the word "conference" anymore. Instead I use the proper pronunciation..... con-fer-ence.

I appreciate how Ty Linder perfected the balance of professionalism and bleeding blue and gold.

Go Flashes.

Fallsdog, I'll sign a petition to make you the interim announcer while we wait for them to have the money to bring Ty back. On the conditions that you can drink during games and you agree you will only rant during timeouts about your disdain for stretch-4s.
