RE: Defense
Reading this thread you couldn’t tell we outscored UCF.

For several reasons we are thin and hound at DB. Going vs a very good and talented and speedy offense which runs plays at three level options on every play young guys will make mistakes. Painful to watch but understandable.

The thing nobody has mentioned is look around the country. TV wants offense. Fans want offense. The rules are built to promote scoring and its working. You have Sabin accusing Ole Miss of stealing signals because they scored 48 on them. It’s the way of the NCAA FB world right now.

Memphis played a lot of zone. They still managed to get behind our DBs.

Their long plays we were in man. On the 93 yard screenplay, our guy got caught inside instead of retreating and getting to the outside. On the 84 yard TD they ran a wheel play and our corner and safety took the WR and left the wheelman one on one with LB.

To me it's mostly about learning. Big plays have been a big problem so far this season. I think the guys have speed and skill, but if they are out of position those things won't matter much.

Coach Silverfield is aware of our defense's needs, if we sign his commitments, Ike thinks we will be much
Improved, in the meantime sit back and watch the offensive show. Ike finds it very entertaining when
TIGERNATION wins. Ike had a Large time in east Memphis last nite, a little sore today but shades cover the black eye, high heels do hurt but no stitches.

I repeat the players have talent, speed, and the give effort. It is the coaches job to put them in position to make plays. If the coaches have them out of position because of scheme or play calling it is on them and not the players. So far the DC hasn't coached up to his reputation.

RE: Defense
Their hurry-up offense had alot to do with the confusion on defense. That's why they run it. We started getting used to it in the second half. Confusion on offense was usually one or two of our receivers getting mixed up, but that's to be expected with freshmen. Brady always got everyone to their places. Kevin Johns and Brady White were on their game all f'n day. Just an amazing game plan ... 04-bow

I don't think they are just overly talented.

That is why small mistakes end up in such huge plays. They have to mentally know where to be ahead of time.

This is also why Hall made so many plays...He wasn't the most athletic...But he anticipated where he needed to be.

Been a tough year to be a new DC trying to put in a new system. Lack of practice time and players missing.
I don't think we've put enough pressure on the QB. Guys like Buechele and Gabriel get comfortable and they pick us apart.
But I will reserve judgement for a few more games.

Clearly this is a learning experience. 3 DCs in 3 years, lack of consistent practice, good offensive teams all add up.

LSU has a TON of talent in the defensive backfield. But they are also on their second DC in as many years and they look baffled.

Just a crazy year, not much else to say.

RE: Defense
IF we had a Spring Camp, many of these complaints would be justified. As of today, we have had fewer practices as a team than Spring Camp and the first week of fall camp.

This is trying to install a pretty different defense than we ran last year, which was different than what we ran the year prior.

Our best DB is sitting on the bench with a strained hamstring. Our best CB was shot the week prior to the AR State game. We've had most of the defense isolated at some point due to C19. This is NOWHERE close to a normal season.

Let's keep it real. There wasn't a lot of effort put into the defense when Norvell was here. Defense has been plaguing us for years. Coach Silverfield will have to catch up

Yeah...

We haven't had a good defense since Odom left (Ranked 28th his last year)

Through 3 coaches...

Fuentes last year
Every Norvell year
and This year.

What Ike said.

I hear all the rational for poor secondary and I'm not saying any of it isn't justified/true. New system, lack of practice time, injuries, etc. All valid.

But, heck, bring people from different places quickly to apply SOME pressure SOMETIMES. At least you force the QB to get the ball out quickly than allow 2-3 seconds for a speedy receiver to run past our DB's.............

RE: Defense
The sign of a good coach is he develops schemes based on his talent, this guy just runs whatever he has always run at several different stops, the 3-4. We don't have the speed to run that, it's like watching Chris ball all over again. I was very excited when he hired this guy, really hope he isn't here long, worst D we have had yet.

I hate saying this because we have some guys that are busting their ass and I love watching, like OB Goodson, but their coach puts them in tough situations.
