No matter the 4th team that's still a quality tournament. I assume there are several teams out there trying to feel out a non-con schedule too so that 4th spot shouldn't be too hard to fill.

Was it a strategic decision on Mick's part to break the team in easy and bring home a trophy, pre-conference? Maybe. But it certainly didn't help our program profile and visibility, playing in obscure locations with limited TV exposure while conference peers were in NYC or Maui on ESPN.

Brannen basically said as much when he took the job. Not only does he like the 2-game MTE, because it allows for UC to add an extra home game as opposed to 3-game MTE's like the Paradise Jam. But he's also explicitly targeting tournaments that are partnered with ESPN, for that exposure you mentioned.

Insane concept for a high-major program like UC's, I know.

"For us, you know, one of the things Cincinnati had never done in the past was get involved with ESPN because ESPN runs a lot of them [multi-team early season tournaments], right. Well, we partnered with ESPN now for the next three years. NIT next year in Kansas City and then Maui the following year."

His scheduling has been a huge needed change of pace across the board. He gets it.

Conference schedule format announced:

20 game conference schedule (previous years was 18, this will be two sets of round robin) and they're starting with 3 weekend windows for games (Dec 14-17, Dec 21-23, Dec 28-31). I assume they're going to try and fit 2 games in each window and see how it proceeds from there.

No surprise there. It makes sense given the uncertainty surrounding non-conference games.

Bolded, I'm a little perplexed by this statement and maybe I'm just interpreting it incorrectly. But UC has been partnered with ESPN for the entire existence of the American and for our entire affiliation period with the old Big East. So is his statement suggesting UC (or the previous coaching staff) didn't want to work with ESPN on these high profile pre-conference tourneys? That would be both surprising and disappointing.

Not taking a shot at previous staff: since Mick came to UC, only ESPN event was Maui when we replaced Louisville, rest of time was a Global Sports run Tournament, or another affiliated event, Prior to Maui haven't been in ESPN Tournament since 2002, 2013 were in Jimmy V Classic (another ESPN Event but not a tournament)

I don't think Brannen was necessarily calling out the previous staff or anything like that. I would like to know more about why we're able to be involved in these high-profile events now and weren't before though...

Mick was close friends with the guy who runs global sports

I have to believe recruits want to play in these high profile tournaments against elite competition. Kudos to Brannen for UC's involvement going forward and for a renewal of our all-time best rivalry with Louisville, if only for a pair of games.
