So, who exactly is our starting QB? Enquiring minds want to know
So, since we don't have an announced starter under center, I am wondering how the following scenario would play out.

Suppose an FBS quarterback chose to transfer to JMU in January. Would he be eligible to play in our spring season after having played FBS ball in the fall?

I would think that he would have used this school year's eligibility before arriving at JMU, but who knows.

If a FBS player played this Fall (more than 4 games), I believe under existing eligibility rules, that would count as a season.

The player could then transfer to a FCS school (must likely before any January bowl game was played, mostly because the transfer player would have to enroll and become eligible at the FCS school) with whatever remaining eligibility they possessed.

Just my guess.

RE: So, who exactly is our starting QB? Enquiring minds want to know
I think the delay to the season plays far more into benefitting Maloney. Cojo has already been at JMU for like 10 years so there is not too much more he can improve. But Maloney getting more reps with the top WRs/TEs via workouts, etc.....should provide a huge benefit for him.

Also with a short season it is even more important to decide on who will be QB1......not like there are gonna be a lot of mulligans or room for error this season.

If we are planning on playing a spring season followed by a fall season, i think that benefits Maloney as well since there wont be a need to have a QB learn an offense in a shorter camp

What about Kyle Adams? Would have had no shot in the fall as he was not in spring camp, but now with the delay seems like if he was really as good as HS stats could he somehow show enough to breakthrough? Cignetti is not afraid to start a true Frosh as he did it with Davis Cheek.

If the season started this fall, I would have said Adams' chance of starting was very slim. However, the more time passes, the better chance he has (my opinion). But you are right, Cignetti is not afraid to play a Freshman QB.
I think it all comes down to who is going to make the best decisions. If I were to make a prediction, I would say Cole is going to be starting with Gage a very close second. Cole has been waiting in the wings most of his time at JMU and I think he is ready. However, the ultimate determination will be made based on the offseason. If Cole has been struggling, he won't see the field.
If nobody stands out and they are all solid, I think the nod goes to Cole.
One thing is certain: I have faith that Cignetti will put the right guy out there as our starting QB.

My fear is both would split time. You know the old saying, if you have two QBs you don’t have one. I fear neither will be good enough to separate themselves.

I look for Gage to run wildcat packages and both QBs to play.

I tend to disagree. My opinion is if Cojo does not stand out as being clearly better for the team, it would be a mistake to start him as the starter for 1 year. Cojo is a good kid, but he does not deserve to be the starter just bc he has been at JMU for 5 years and has been the primary backup each season. QB1 is not given it is earned by leadership and play, period.

This may not be a popular opinion but at minimum play Johnson and Maloney. I expect that the JMU OOC games will be home cupcakes. Play both early and design packages for Maloney like they did for a play or two in the title game. It could work and be a weapon for conference season. I know the adage is if you have 2 quarterbacks you have 0 quarterbacks but I don’t think either is head and shoulders above the other. Both are capable with the O Line and running game that we have and bring different things. Use em both!

Leak/Tebow played together for a season, didn’t they?

In that scenario- who would you start then and why? I have no issue with you disagreeing with me, but at least explain who you would start then.
My point was that if there is no standout, you give it to the guy that has been out there the most. Cole has actually started games for us in the past. Gage hasn't even played a full half of college football that was meaningful. He saw some time at the NC game and was disappointing.
Seniority doesn't play into it for me. Experience does. While I thought CJ may get the nod, personally I don't care who it is as long as the QB does what he is asked to do.

I hope Cojo starts next year. We'll see. I'd love to see him get his chance, but I'll support whatever the coaches decide. It would be a bit of feel good story if he started this year.

If neither Gage nor Cojo separate themselves from one another (or someone else) I would always start the younger QB, in this case Gage b/c the upside is greater for JMU football and can potentially be the starting QB for more than a single season.

I see no benefit starting Cojo if they are that close, a flip of the coin.

Sorry I thought my rationale was obvious.

I'm not sold on Gage at all. He throws a funny pass with the nose of the ball pointed downward. Also, don't know if he can throw the finesse passes. Big strong arm, but that doesn't necessarily equate to being a well rounded QB.

I see Cole starting and bringing in Gage every few series and add the running game threat to keep opposing defenses off balance. Cole can do the job. Give him his chance.

I think I said the same thing as the two of you first. Are you agreeing or did you think you had an original thought? 04-cheers

Agree with observation of Gage's passes. Thats all arm slot, and perhaps choking the ball...I'd bet he was a pitcher or corner outfielder at some point. I dont recall whether ive seen him throw a deep ball...but should be less of an issue on deep balls because of legs, shoulder position and ball trajectory.

I know it was a specific package but i think putting Gage in the NC on the biggest stage shows Cignetti's faith in him. We are going to be a run first team no matter what so an additional runner that the defense will have to account for makes it tougher to defend.

I agree. Gage is a dual threat. Cole is not. At this level, having a dual-threat QB is very important.
