Just for fun: ACC's 16th member
Let me emphasize that this is purely for fun and discussion. I'm not at all predicting that there will ever be a 16th member of the ACC. But if there had to be one, which option would it be?

Considering the academic rigor that the ACC seems to aim for (minus Louisville), only a few of these would meet their standards. TCU would, but they are way on an island in that conference, so they're eliminated.

With that, it seems that Connecticut would be the best fit as an Olympic-only team, as they'd fit the geography & academic standards of the ACC, plus they have a history as a basketball contender, which also fits the mold.

Of those listed, Cincinnati, West Virginia and UCF would make the most sense. UConn would be OK except for FB.

UCF would make for 3 Florida teams. Of course there's 4 from North Carolina. And UCF will be a dominating athletics presence in all sports for the foreseeable future.

West Virginia would be academically inferior to most of the ACC (as was Louisville's selection in 2013). But West Virginia has pretty good top level athletics and fits the footprint. While expanding it.

UConn fits every single criterion except for FB. Helps in every other way. Great choice...except weakens FB.

Cincinnati may be the second strongest choice on this list. Very good in sports. Good in FB. And BB. Adds a state (as does WVU and UConn).

I think UConn loses this battle.

It becomes a 3 Horse race. Cincy will nose out the other two.

Navy would be the one Notre Dame would want.

If bringing them on would help corral ND as a full member, I could see the ACC going for it, otherwise probably not.

UConn for all sports but football. Gives the ACC 16 in hoops. League stays at 14 in football.

Now, if the league could add Army and Navy for football only ... bingo.

RE: Just for fun: ACC's 16th member
This is a question that IMO can only be answered after resolving two major unknowns: will Notre Dame remain independent in football post-COVID, and will the NCAA eliminate the requirement for balanced divisions in football.

If the answer to both of these questions is yes (and I believe it would be), then I believe it is a three-way race among Cincinnati, West Virginia and UCF. Each has its strong points and weaknesses.

UCF has great potential in football. Not so much in Olympic sports. If it continues on its current trajectory, it will reach a respectable football attendance and media attractiveness. And, it gives the ACC a more dominant position in the fertile recruiting ground of Florida, while giving the northern schools more frequent opportunities to play in that recruiting ground. It is not yet considered an academic peer by most of the league, but that may be less important in the future than it has been in the past.

West Virginia would bring strength in both football and basketball, and a long history with the northern schools while probably being acceptable to the southern schools from an athletic standpoint. Academics would be problematic, as their mission is more geared to serving all West Virginia students than it is to excel in research.

Cincinnati is a good choice for all the criteria the ACC would likely use, even if they aren't necessarily the best of the three in any one sport. On the academic front they fit the ACC profile the best (of these three schools, excluding the others listed in the poll). Because they have the fewest reasons for any current ACC members to vote against them, I think they would be most likely to get the nod.

But if the answer to either of those questions is no, I would probably go in a different direction. If the P5 continues to vote to require football divisions, I would not add just one school to get to your 16 team premise unless Notre Dame goes all in. In that case, I would probably want to add Navy for football only. But I'm not sure they would accept the invitation.

So I realize this is for fun- but is TCU and WVU going to pay a big exit fee to make less money in the ACC?

16 is too many, the ACC knows that. They've scuttled a powerful brand for taking ESPN's bait to split up the Big East to save them money.

A 12 team ACC (so long to BC, Pitt, and post-Boeheim Syracuse) would be a powerful combination.

If we had to add a 16th, then ND has agreed to be all in. In that case, the preferences:

1) Navy (FB only) - probably would have to limit ACC conference games to a 7 game schedule. ND and Navy would insist for different reasons, but it would be contingent on their participation...Deep South schools with SEC in-state games (FSU, GT, CU and UL) would be supportive. Allows Navy to continue some long-standing rivalries with ND, Duke, Pitt, UVA, BC and Syracuse. It’s an excellent geographic and cultural fit...that allows Navy to maintain Olympic sports in the Patriot.

2) WVU - not sure that they are available, but they would likely add the most media revenue...with strong programs in both football and basketball. It’s another perfect geographic fit (although the cultural differences will create some noise). They get to renew rivalries with Pitt, Syracuse, VT, BC, UVA and Miami...which will help the value of media contracts.

3) None - not sure why a 16th team is needed.

Navy would have to be football-only. I don't think the ACC wants that.

UConn's football is so awful that FSU and Clemson would scream if they were admitted, even as a pair with Notre Dame (unless Notre Dame insisted upon UConn. But they won't). So they're out.

I think UCF is the "right" choice. It's already big, and it would guarantee dominance of Florida forever. In 2 decades, Florida will be bigger than New York and Michigan combined. But if you just look at today, UCF is sort of like Louisville without the basketball tradition. Tobacco Road doesn't want to add another Louisville.

So I think Cincinnati is the choice in the end.

WVU gets my vote on the grounds that they should have been a co-founder back in 1953.

Of the choices, I'd have to go with Cincinnati for many of the reasons mentioned by others.

North - BC, Cuse, Pitt, Cincy, ND, Louisville, VT, UVA
South - Duke, UNC, NCSU, Wake, Clemson, GT, FSU, Miami

Although that's state of North Carolina overload in the south and separates UVA from UNC.

Of any choices available, I'd go with ND and Texas

North - BC, Cuse, Pitt, ND, VT, UVA, Duke, UNC
South - Louisville, NCSU, Wake, Clemson, GT, FSU, Miami, Texas

Not really.

VT and WVU were left behind in the SoCon because they were part of the reason the ACC schools split. They tended to vote with the Washington & Lee/ Bill & Mary/Richmond small school block. The schools that left the SoCon in 1953 left because of the limited vision of the small school block so it wouldn't make much sense in bringing it with them.

I strongly believe that ND will resume football independence as soon as Covid lets it.

Jack Swarbrick, John Swofford and Brian Kelly have all said so. I believe them.

So, I don't think that the ACC will expand at all. None of the options would increase the media payout enough to justify it.

If ND football stays in the ACC full time, then I vote for Navy as a football only member.

Personally I would love Texas it even Tulane, but those are either a pipe dream or not really a feasible option.

Of the more likely scenarios, trying to get ND on board and then eliminating the divisions and staying pat at 15 is the way to go.

Tulane has a near ideal ACC university profile, but needs more seasoning in the American before its athletic programs are ACC standard. The ACC should wait until Tulane is ready - and that will be around 8-10 years provided that Tulane continues to grow (and that may never happen).

Texas can be added tomorrow but I don't think they'll bite.

As much as ESPN would like to rid itself of the Longhorn Network, UT-Austin has no desire to take a 1/16 share of ACC Network revenues in exchange.
