That link shows the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings, from 2013-2020. (Rice was as high as #14 in 2018).

Here are the magazine's rankings from their first edition (1983) through 2007 (Rice was #9 in 1989): https://publicuniversityhonors.com/2017/...1983-2007/ ... and from 2008-2015 (Rice went from #19 => #16): https://publicuniversityhonors.com/2015/...8-present/

It looks like Cornell, Vanderbilt, Wash U, Rice and Notre Dame form a tight and fairly consistent bottom quarter of the top 20. From year year to year we've been moving up and down in that quartile, but it has been a long time since we have been in a higher quartile.

I saw where Harvard enrollment is down by 20%. I wonder if this us due to less international students enrolling?

The Harvard Crimson article (https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2020/...t-numbers/) doesn't mention internationals.

Quote:Roughly 5,231 undergraduates intend to enroll this fall, Gay wrote. Though figures vary slightly each year, Common Data Set filings from last year showed Harvard had 6,755 enrolled undergraduates.

340 freshmen deferred their enrollment to next year, representing more than 20 percent of the freshman class. Between 80 and 110 students take a gap year under typical circumstances, according to the College’s website.

Rice and ND are the only two without a med school (although ND does award a PhD/MD jointly with IU) and Rice is the only one without a law school. That would suggest that 1) Rice's undergrad education is superior to the others, and 2) the way to break out of that group and go higher is pretty apparent.

Of course, Princeton at #1 has neither, too.

One might also include Brown in that tight grouping, although it would be at the top of the group. The gaps between Brown on average and Dartmouth on average (2.75), and the difference between ND on average and Emory (3.75) are comparable to the difference between Brown and ND (2.875). Brown does have a med school.

And Rice is in the process of developing a pre-law program through the School of Social Sciences.

RE: U.S. News 2021 Rankings
I agree that a pre law major does not make sense and law schools usually do not recommend it because they would rather do their own training in law. An English or History major would be good because of the practice in writing. Science or Engineering would provide a chance to do Intellectual Property Law and a backup career if do not want to do law. Same for an accounting background for tax law. Maybe it only makes sense to have a one or two semester overview of law.

I have seen UH alums complain that it is easier for Rice and UT grads to get into UH Law School than UH grads. I would take a big investment for Rice to be able to have a good law school. It would be hard to set up a new law school and there is not enough demand for another law school. If we took over South Texas Rice would have to drastically change it. A&M has done it with Texas Weslayan and got its ranking near that of UH, Baylor, and SMU. It took getting new faculty, cutting admissions, and providing scholarships etc.

I am curious what the School of Social Sciences means by "pre-law program".

Most law schools will tell you that Rice (like every university) already has dozens of suitable pre-law programs; they are simply called "majors".

A friend of mine is a top fertility doctor... Majored in Art History and took all the Med School Pre-Reqs under that exact theory. he knew he was going to be busting his butt elsewhere, so take classes you enjoy. Doesn't mean they are easy.... just that if you have a passion for them, they are 'easier'.
