It looks like Cornell, Vanderbilt, Wash U, Rice and Notre Dame form a tight and fairly consistent bottom quarter of the top 20. From year year to year we've been moving up and down in that quartile, but it has been a long time since we have been in a higher quartile.

I saw where Harvard enrollment is down by 20%. I wonder if this us due to less international students enrolling?

Brown does have a med school.

I agree that a pre law major does not make sense and law schools usually do not recommend it because they would rather do their own training in law. An English or History major would be good because of the practice in writing. Science or Engineering would provide a chance to do Intellectual Property Law and a backup career if do not want to do law. Same for an accounting background for tax law. Maybe it only makes sense to have a one or two semester overview of law.

I have seen UH alums complain that it is easier for Rice and UT grads to get into UH Law School than UH grads. I would take a big investment for Rice to be able to have a good law school. It would be hard to set up a new law school and there is not enough demand for another law school. If we took over South Texas Rice would have to drastically change it. A&M has done it with Texas Weslayan and got its ranking near that of UH, Baylor, and SMU. It took getting new faculty, cutting admissions, and providing scholarships etc.

I am curious what the School of Social Sciences means by "pre-law program".

Most law schools will tell you that Rice (like every university) already has dozens of suitable pre-law programs; they are simply called "majors".

A friend of mine is a top fertility doctor... Majored in Art History and took all the Med School Pre-Reqs under that exact theory. he knew he was going to be busting his butt elsewhere, so take classes you enjoy. Doesn't mean they are easy.... just that if you have a passion for them, they are 'easier'.
