And yet I still have the nagging feeling I’m Charlie Brown and the BOT is Lucy

Five years ago UAB was was almost out of C-USA but not very happy about it. Some of our conference mates of that time may remember our pleas back then.

RE: BOT Meeting - 2 Athletics Facility Items on the Agenda
The BoT may have inadvertently done us a favor. Putting in the "You can do basically anything you want to in Athletics as long as you pay for it" policy and capping institutional support at $15m or so means that UAB is not under nearly the sort of money pressure as the P5 schools were without their big football contract dollars. Fifteen million is certainly a lot of money, but it is nowhere near the ninety to hundred twenty-five million shortfalls that they were looking at. Yes, we needed to play (and to get the Miami game in) to stay solvent ourselves, but our overall position is actually fairly decent. Many thanks and much honor is owed to the Group of Seven, the Football Foundation, and all the various UAB supporters who got us to this point. I don't know that you could have made me believe that a turnaround this substantial was possible in five years after the BoT killed our football program.

Move us up to the AAC with even a moderately decent TV contract and we'll start to approach self sufficiency over time.

Make no mistake, the Big Ten deal was all about the money. You'll notice that no one is crying about all the other fall sports that got axed and fighting to bring them back, other than perhaps MBB, and that's a money maker as well.

The board is not stopping us from a conference switch. In fact they will be in favor of it as it will be more television revenue. Oh PBJ will still whine to what few friends he has left but that’s about it. Keep raising money and building.

The disdain for CUSA on this board is borderline laughable. It's not like UAB has done anything to make this conference better over the last five years.

Yes, I'm all for being able to move into a better conference for monetary purposes but lets not act like CUSA has been bad for UAB. Most of the programs in this league (including UAB) has underachieved miserably.

My disdain for CUSA comes from the laughable leadership. Not sure if that's all on the conference office or the collective presidents. Decisions such as:

- Giving ESPN the finger in favor of Fox and CBSsports. A disaster

- Moving the conference basketball tournament to Frisco, TX. A joke.

- Putting UAB in the Big City Texas Schools That Aren't Worth a Damn Division. An anchor.

I'm sure there are more but the TV coverage alone should warrant closure of the Dallas offices. Why are CUSA's offices in Dallas anyway?

CUSA sucks.

The ESPN decision was not made by the current leadership and being in the west is geography. Both factors the current leadership can’t control.

If we aren't the pick for the AAC I hope we move to the SBC for a more regional conference.

Uh no. Hell no. No f’n way. Outside of Georgia State no Sunbelt member east of Texas is even close to being our peer. At least in CUSA there are similar academic institutions. A conference is about more than sports and more than football.

Yup.

CUSA & Sunbelt really should look at possibly merging or consolidating somehow, BUT that’s up to them...it won’t affect us.

Actually, the conferences are ONLY about sports. They have no control over any other aspect of the member universities. I know that people like to sell this argument, but I just don't buy it. Each conference has some stellar academic members...and some that aren't necessarily the top of the heap. As an example, the predecessor to the AAC, Big East Football. Once upon a time they expelled Temple, a pretty good school, from the conference because they sucked so bad at football. Clearly academics played no part in that decision. Like others around here, I find it funny that some turn their nose up at the SBC. I would like to be in the AAC, but I don't think we need to act like anybody owes us anything.

Temple was kicked out because they didn’t honor their agreement to invest in athletics

So you agree with me that the decision was based entirely on athletics, and not any other factors like academics or what have you. Got it.

If conferences only care about sports and nothing else why isn’t Liberty in an athletic conference for football
