Maybe so, but I for one am tired of the slamming of basketball and football by supporters of these sports. Let's be REALLY honest here. Swimming wins a crappy conference every year and rarely ever puts anyone in the NCAAs. In fact, last year was the first qualifier we have had in 35 years. 35 years. And the boasting of the academic all-americas is not an apples to apples comparison. Does anyone want the truth in these numbers or just continue talking like swimming, etc have all the good students? Over 1000 D1 swimmers made academic all america last year. 1000. There are only 130 or so programs. The criteria is vastly different from the football selection criteria which produces around 50 per year at the FCS level. The football team considers football success as well.I'm no fan of cutting any sports but acting like swimming was some nationally renowned program is a joke. Just stop beating up the kids that are left. Most of them want everyone to have a chance to do their thing as well.

I get it that people are pissed about the handling of their sports, but this social media barrage of plagiarism outrage seems dumb to me. Referring AD Huge to the honor council? I'm not sure how that helps or what they expect to happen. Rather than the positive process of petitions and fund raising, which I think is fantastic, this sort of attack comes off as petulant and a distraction from the cause they are working for.

Okay, then keeping with honesty, at least swimming wins a crappy conference, something MBB and WBB have never done.

And, people have every right to be pissed. Huge ignoring their voices, once again, adds a level of disrespect toward her stakeholders. I'm hearing the Athletic Department is now blocking responses on Twitter. Did I wake up in North Korea? In what world does a leader censor stakeholders?

The plagiarism claim at its base speaks to the argument that Huge is not displaying W&M values and therefore shouldn't be representing W&M. The honor council is a bit much; has an administrator ever appeared before them?

Amen. This narrative that the 7 sports academically propped up football and basketball isn't fair and and belittles the academic achievements of some very bright kids. I feel that they could make their very worthy case without feeling the need to put fellow athletes on blast.

So we're judging the success of student-athletes based on what they do after college? WTH? Okay, has swimming ever graduated a convicted rapist? Give me a break.

Becoming professionally successful outside their sport accounts for nothing?

It's a judgment of the relative talent level of the programs. Football also has players appear in the senior bowl and produces FCS level All Americans and national award nominees. Basketball had Nathan Knight and Marcus Thornton nominated for national awards in the past 10 years. Is there similar/relative success from the swimming programs? I genuinely don't know the answer to that.

Locked is due to lots of changes and sometimes vandalism. It means the page can't be changed until it's unlocked.

It's specifically locked due to vandalism. Some of the recent edits did not meet the "standards of biographies of living people"

This is a silly argument. Our MBB program is a laughing punchline. One of 4 or 5 to NEVER make the NCAAT.

I don't think fans of the cut 7 should attack the main 3, either. I've stated that. But, you minimizing their contribution like our basketball programs have done anything is laughable.

I read this on W&M Athletics wiki:

"Recently, William & Mary's Athletic Director made the unconscionable decision to cut men's indoor and outdoor track, swimming, gymnastics, and women's volleyball. During her first year, Huge racked up an impressive $17.6 million in debt. Rather than putting this blame on poor financial decisions, she chose to blame the low-budget sports. Huge certainly has left her mark on Tribe Athletics by alienating 5,000+ student-athletes and alumni."

Huge's page comes up just fine for me.

I'm confused... I was told by this board that the basketball program was in great shape and that its coach deserved a position for life?

The point being made was that swimming, despite winning all those conference championships, was not significantly higher profile nationally than basketball or football. The tone in the Hildebrand letter was "why do we keep supporting dead weight like football and basketball at the expense of swimming?"

Yes, they can be pissed. Most of these programs are loaded with good kids and great students. And it sucks. But belittling of their fellow student-athletes with sketchy comparisons does nothing except piss off who’s left. They can do better.

RE: W&M Cuts 7 Sports
Well now ....

Anyone with any knowledge of / experience with Tribe Athletics over the past 40 - 50 years knows that there has ALWAYS been a San Andreas fault between athletics and academics at W&M, and that the athletics’ side has always had to stand shoulder to shoulder to prevent an erosion of athletics at W&M ... stand in the breach / academics at the gate, if you will. It has been a very delicate balancing act.

That is fundamentally why the current Administration .... President / BOV / AD ... are simply bone-headed / bull in china shop in this regard, and a circular athletics firing squad has begun.

Remember Hunt For Red October? “You arrogant SOB, you’ve sunk us”.

The current Administration has caused W&M’s Andreas Fault to shift, and the athletics side is going to be permanently damaged .... totally opposite to the intended result.

Where are the adults? Where are the wise men and women? Are they even being listened to? Or have they all been run out of town / alienated?

I agree. But now some on this board are equally disparaging swimming. Both are unwarranted.
